BORAT
Who is going to see this opening weekend? I can not wait. The only thing that saddens me is that now that everyone knows who he is, this is the end for Borat :(
|
yeah I'm pretty excited about the movie, I just hope it doesn't turn into rick james/napoleon dynamite
|
This uh suit is NOTT BLACK
|
Yeah going to see it on Friday.
And it is definitely going to turn into Rick James/Napoleon Dynamite. :-\ |
Already saw it (last month)..... it really is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long long time.

I guess so because I don't know what youre saying.
|
Trust me... no matter how many people know who he is, this was going to be the end of Borat anyways. Cohen is moving on to work on "BRUNO" sometime next year (based on his gay austrian fashionista character).
And don't fool yourself into thinking that everyone knows or cares who Borat is. Outside of the 3 major film centers in the US (NY, LA, Chicago) this movie is testing horribly and Fox has already pulled it down to about 800 screens nationwide for the opening. |
Not Interested.
|
I'll be there.
|
It's shame that this will flop after Snakes on a Plane was so succesful...

Are you serious? SOAP was a failure. |
1# in the box is good from where I sit. (Although it did not make it's estimations it still had success)

I'm sorry man... it was a failure. From where I sit (inside the business) that doesn't look to good for BORAT to be compared to SOAP. |
I have not been looking forward to seeing a comedy this badly since Something's Gotta Give.
|
Please note that I have never seen Something's Gotta Give.
|
Gonna see it Friday, if nothing better comes up.
|

I hang my head in shame sorry |
I really wanna see it, but I don't think it will be the next Napoleon Dynamite. It's relatively smart satire, and Fox has dropped it to 800 screens with potential to give it a larger release. It won't hit the small towns like Dynamite did.
|
Quote:
|
Napoleon Dynamite opened in literally like two theaters. It didn't spread to smaller markets until months after its original release.
|
I dont know, Borats kinda funny but I think its just a rip off of that Yakkoff Sminorff comedian from years ago.
|
Except Borat is funny.

All the reviews I'm getting are saying this is the funniest movie ever. I'm worried that it won't live up to the hype.

Ever... Probably not. The movie is fucking hilarious though.

GOING TO SEE THIS RIGHT NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WHOOOOOO
|
Just got back. This movie deserves a ROFLcopter.
|
Joey Slugs, what do you do "inside the buissness"??
Also, you are retarded.. I haven't been able to turn on the tv without seeing him on a show or seeing an ad for this movie.. Fucksake, I've heard it called "the funniest movie of all time" on some pretty mainsteam shows.. |
Quote:
|
Joey Slugs is trying to destroy this movie!!!!!!!!!
|
I want the movie to succeed, it will make our work over the past 6-8 months worth it.
But I'm being realistic. Thanks to the horrible job SOAP did (there was mainstream outlets predicting a $40-60 million dollar opening) you can never be sure how a smaller movie will do. |
Quote:
Good for you. It's not like that all over the country as it would be for a movie like Spider-Man. |
Again, what do you do in "the industry"?? By "our work" do you mean you worked on it?? (cause I know some camera operators that did)
Also, national news and entertainment stations are broadcast all over the country.. Just this morning, I've seen him on Mtv, CNN, and E!.. These channels are nation wide.. I don't see where your argument is coming from.. |
ALSO, I currently live in Jackson, MS.. If it was going to be ignored anywhere, it'd be here..
Again, your argument is rather pooy.. |
No, I did not work on the movie directly but I did help market it. And you are a fool to think that just because it is being shown and talked about on CNN, E!, and MTV that everyone cares about this movie and is going to rush out and see it.
Like I said, I saw it last month and thought it was very funny. Funniest movie ever? No. But funniest movie to come out in quite some time? Yeah. How much do you think it will make this weekend? |
I saw it and really enjoyed it. There was a couple of lady friends in front of me in ticket line that were like 55-60 years old who were going to see Borat. When I heard them ask for tickets to Borat I asked them to confirm what I heard. One person said, "Yeah, not by my choice." I laughed and wished them good luck. Just was suprised to see people that age going to see Borat. Was wondering if any of the older people in the theater(there were more than just that couple of friends) would walk out during it. When I saw The Aristocrats in theater, the 60 year old guy walked out of the film.
|
You are a fucking idiot to think they are trying to compete with Spiderman 3 and the like.. This is an indy movie that they prolly shot for well under 1 million dollars.. If it grosses $2 million in it's entire run, it's a success.. As Trips said, it will be more of a cult hit ala Napolian Dynomite.. How much did Evil Dead make it's opening weekend?? Yeah.. Does that mean it's not a success??
Come on.. This movie will make well over 100 times what it cost to film it, specially once it comes out on DVD.. Garantee it.. p.s. You keep hinting about your position in "the industry".. For a THIRD time, what do you do?? |
Itried to see Borat last night but it was sold out  I'm gonna try again tonight.
|
Well, you are a fool to think that just because it was sold out at your theater, that means people actually want to see it..[/Joey Slugs]
|
Seriously Joey, you are coming off as quite the ignorant shithead here..
|
Quote:
No. Just because a movie is a cult favorite (ie: Evil Dead) doesn't mean the movie was a success. Look at SOAP... it reached cult status before it was ever released and it's considered a flop. All I'm saying is that Borat is not going to be the HUGE hit they some people are thinking it will be. Sure a bunch of college students that remember the Ali G Show will go out and see it and of course it will sell out theaters, but Fox has already dropped it from near 2,000 screens to around 800.... plus it has to compete for it's box office share with two sure fire kids movies and Saw III is still going to make money. And making money on DVD is a whole separate topic. I'll say that it will make somewhere in the $9-$12 million dollar range and Fox will not open it up to more screens (Ferinheight 9/11 made about $26 million in just as many screens). It might not even get the #1 spot this weekend. And while Borat is one of the funniest movie I have seen in awhile... it's not even the funniest movie I have seen this year... That honor goes to Idiocracy. And as for what I do for a living... I work for a Marketing/Advertising (regional/city manager) company that deals with 95% of the studios (early movie releases/early cut trailers & commercials/opening weekend premieres) so I tend to see footage 6-8 months before a movie is released and I see most movies close to a month from it's opening. Neilson Entertainment is one of our biggest clients (which gives us a direct link to Sony,Fox, Dreamworks, Lionsgate & WB and we work with the rest of the studios either indirectly or on a first run basis). |

Borat is a low budget indy film.. Fuck sake, they didn't even pay the extras.. No art department, no grips, no lighting, no anything but him (Sacha Barren Cohen) and a few carmera operators.. They prolly didn't even have a "base camp".. On a big budget movie, like Snakes on a Plane, they had to build sets, rent trucks and trailors, rent grip and lighting equipment, pay for locations, filming permits, fire permits for the special effect, computer graphics, so on and so forth.. Then, you have the crew to pay for.. Then caterting and craft service.. It's endless.. Borat prolly had a crew of like ten people, working out of ONE 15 passenger van with like two cameras.. "Cult Classic" or not, there is no comparison.. A movie success means, they make more money off the film than they paid to make the film.. I.E. if Borat was filmed for around a mill (which is my estimate) they will more than make that if not this weekend than by next Monday.. You really have no idea what you are talking about.. |
So you're an ad agent who works with movie companies.. Here, from how you were talking I thought you were a Line Producer or a UPM, you know, someone who actually would know what they were talking about..
|
I'm sorry... I forgot... If you work on a movie, helping get the word out... testing it and showing it to the public fr their opinion... about 6 months beofre the movie is released... instead of actually being on set.... I have zero fucking clue what I'm talking about. Oh well.
|
Honesty is the best policy.
|
Saw it last night, everyone was rofling the whole time. I dunno about funniest movie ever made, but I was busting my balls laughing a few times, which is something I rarely do in theaters.
|
Sorry, Joey, you can't really compare the 2. Krispy makes a good point about the cost difference between the 2 movies. And that early cult status due to the sheer cheesiness of the premise is what killed SOAP at the box office. Even with just that 13 million that SOAP made, Borat would be a huge relative success. You can't really compare the profitability an indy flick to what was supposed to be a huge summer blockbuster.

You, as someone who deals with this all the time should know better than to compare a low budget indy film and a 100 million dollar major motion picture regaurdless whether both are "cult" movies or not.. At scale, Borat will slaughter SOAP and many other huge blockbusters.. Compared to how much they spent to make it, to how much it will make (at the theater and DVDs) I bet it could hang with any movie released this year.. |
Little update on how Borat is doing thus far. Source: http://joblo.com/index.php?id=13448
Looks like Fox finally has a massive smash on its hands, as BORAT opened to record numbers on Friday, despite only showing in about 800 theaters. The film grossed close to $10M on Friday alone, which is a figure most were estimating that it would make the entire weekend. The film is now slated to make between $20-30M over the weekend and most likely finish in the #1 spot, ahead of THE SANTA CLAUSE 3, which many were expecting to finish at the top of the box-office, especially since it was playing in close to 3500 theaters and the animated film, FLUSHED AWAY, which was also playing in over 3500 theaters. Fox decided to release BORAT at a slow pace, with a limited release starting things off this weekend, but unlike SNAKES ON A PLANE, it looks like this film is for real and the hype is more than just hype, but actual interest! The film only cost $18M to make so much like the JACKASS movies, it will already be "in the black" after this coming weekend. Congrats to Sacha Baron Cohen and the filmmakers for their great success. I guess Borat will not be "execute" by the Kazakhstani government after all. Click HERE to see the actual box-office figures. |
Wow, 10 mil in 800 theatres.
|
Yeah Kris P., that "way under 1 mil" really seemed way off but I didn't say anything.
|
Wow.
Seriously didn't stop laughing for the entire movie. Incredible. Was about to die during the "wrestling" scene. Also, I have no idea how anyone is saying that this movie will bomb. It is an actual fucking hilarious movie that every single person on earth should find funny unless they are fucking retarded pieces of shit. Thus, it will make tons of money by word of mouth alone. That is why Napoleon Dynamite was so successful. It was hilarious so people went to see it. The difference is Snakes on a Plane was a horrible movie and this movie is classic. I have no idea how anyone is even comparing the two at all. Nothing alike. I didn't even read this joey slugs/krispy argument but I am betting it is fucking stupid and it shouldn't even be happening at all since the original point slugs made was retarded and has no merit whatsoever. |
I saw it tonight and thought it was freakin hilarious. Also, I tihnk it will do well...a lot of the showings have been at least like 80% full.
|
mint city not showing Borat
so mad |
If BORAT can make more money on it's opening weekend than F9/11 did... then god bless. It's about time Fox didn't fuck up a small release (ie: Idiocrcy).
|
Quote:
Toronto is massive, and it's only being shown on a handful of screens here right now. |
Almost went to see it tonight.
Shoulda, I GUESS. |
Quote:
|
BTW: Just for shit and giggles at this point... BORAT's budget was $18 Million and SOAP's budget was $33 Million.
Not that far off. And since his "highness" doesn't bother to read the arguement... the comparison i was making between the two was because they both had HUGE buzz surrounding them going into their respective openings. |

Quote:
Also, I bet Sacha Cohen walked away with a good chunk.. |
Quote:
They are two totally different films, on two totally different scales.. Borat was classified as a documentary during filming.. My buddy Don Warren was a camera man on it and he told me they had to sign the contract saying they would "let out" anything that went on.. The contract was given to the crew as a reality/documentary thing.. Like, they were trying to make it out like it was real.. Once they showed up, they told them that no matter what happens on set, they couldn't laugh.. As I said, until it was in post production, they tried to sell it as being real.. Alot of money prolly went into legal issues with filming people, in a real setting, for a fake documentary.. There's enough legal issues when filming a "real" movie.. Truthfully, I still don't see how it cost that much but whatever.. |
I saw it last Thursday, funny stuff. Everyone was pissing themselves.
|
Just came back from seeing it, was ROFLOL the whole way through.
|
I dont' know how Napolian Dynamite was brought up in this thread. That movie was terrible. Borat is the funniest thing I've ever seen. We were with about 12 people in our group and one girl found it really offensive. We therefore called her an idiot.
Arguably the greatest movie ever. |
Yeah during the wrestling scene I was seriously dying, same with the running of the jews part and when he sacks pam

Weekend Box-Office Report thanks to JoBlo. http://joblo.com/index.php?id=13442
I was watching an "Ali G" show marathon on TV last night, and after two hours of Ali G, Borat and Bruno, star Sacha Baron Cohen's three alter-egos, I couldn't help but re-acknowledge this man's pure genius. I honestly could not turn away from the television set (mind you, I was also high at the time, but that's another story altogether). Some are starting to compare him to comedian Andy Kaufman from the 70s, and I can see how those comparisons have come to be. All that to say that BORAT, the film, opened in the #1 spot this past weekend, with close to $30M in receipts, despite the fact that it only played in about 800 theaters, compared to most films in the top 10, which play in over 2000 theaters. Next week, the film is supposed to widen its release into 2500 theaters, at which point, he will likely be certified as a complete phenomenon, that might even break the $100M mark (the film only cost $18M to make). Disney's THE SANTA CLAUSE 3 finished in second place with a disappointing $20M, which is much lower than its previous incarnation of the Tim Allen character, which opened at $29M and went on to gross $140M (maybe the release of a Christmas movie one week after Halloween didn't make a whole lot of sense?). Dreamworks' animated FLUSHED AWAY opened with a decent $19M in third place, but according to Yahoo Movies, the film cost around $130M, so the opening isn't exactly a celebratory figure. Last week's #1 movie, SAW 3, dropped an expected 50%+ and into fourth place, but still managed to add about $16M to its coffers, raising its total to about $60M to this point (considering that the film only cost about $10M to make, methinks everyone involved with this puppy is pretty happy these days). THE DEPARTED managed to continue its box-office roll with yet another $8M added to its total, which has now officially surpassed the $100M mark. The film only dropped about 18% of its audience from last week, and doesn't seem to want to stop anytime soon. With its solid word of mouth, THE QUEEN (not a film about Elton John) managed to rise into the top 10 with $3M in receipts this past weekend, raising its total to $10M since its limited release about six weeks ago. Next week sees the addition of 4 new movie releases including Batman starring in HARSH TIMES, Ricky Bobby starring in an original looking comedy entitled STRANGER THAN FICTION, the man with a temper who hates onliners starring in A GOOD YEAR and Sarah Michelle Gellar starring in THE GRUDGE 3, I mean...THE RETURN. By the way, what's your take on the whole BORAT success? VOTE HERE!! 1. Borat $ 26.4 Million NEW 2. The Santa Clause 3:... $ 20 Million NEW 3. Flushed Away $ 19.1 Million NEW 4. Saw 3 $ 15.5 Million $ 60.1 Million 5. The Departed $ 8 Million $ 102.3 Million 6. The Prestige $ 7.8 Million $ 39.4 Million 7. Flags of our Fathers $ 4.5 Million $ 26.6 Million 8. Man of the Year $ 3.8 Million $ 34 Million 9. Open Season $ 3.1 Million $ 81.4 Million 10. The Queen $ 3 Million $ 10.1 Million |
Finally saw it tonight, fucking incredible.

Seriously, the Godfather is up there as best movie ever, but there are parts where my mind drifted. The same goes with every single movie I've ever watched, aside from Borat.
