Smackdow's WM23 Main Event

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (dated November 27th), Dave Meltzer is reporting that Vince McMahon has already agreed to a Batista vs Undertaker match, in a 'world title vs WM streak' match at Wrestlemania 23. Probably the most significant thing written is that Batista is the one planned to get the win, at this point.

The Optimist 11-27-2006 10:28 PM

So, this kinda blows, if true.

What Would Kevin Do? 11-27-2006 10:30 PM

Happier and happier I didn't buy tickets to Mania.

Mr. Nerfect 11-28-2006 12:26 AM

I feared they would do this match. It's Batista's dream match, and they've fucked up everything else. Oh God, this will suck.

Mr. JL 11-28-2006 12:31 AM

Why should the Undertaker put over a guy who is only about 3 1/2 years younger than he is?

Jordan 11-28-2006 12:32 AM

I've been pulling for that, im very glad!

Taker is hopefully stubborn enough to not give it up to Batista. Surely? There are many better choices to end Taker's streak than Batista. Ken Doane comes to mind. The guy is so young, and he's already got so much talent. Bring him back up, call him "Ken Doane", and push the bastard.

KingofOldSchool 11-28-2006 12:36 AM

Hell, give it Lashley and get him over as an uber heel.

I'm telling you with proper direction Lashley can be a major heel.

Caged Heat18 11-28-2006 01:39 AM

I don't like the idea of Taker/Batista.

El Fangel 11-28-2006 01:43 AM

I don't like the idea of his streak being broken, a 14-0 Streak is something that isn't likely to happen again, in the next 20 years, the only chance likely is Edge (4-0 I think) and Mankind (0-8 I think)

Plus who is going to carry who to a good match?

Jordan 11-28-2006 01:58 AM

I think Undertaker will win.

Shadow 11-28-2006 02:17 AM

Oh this shall only end in tears and fire.

Seriouslly...use that streak on someone who's a lot younger. Like CM Punk for example.

El Fangel 11-28-2006 02:28 AM

Or not break it at all, and leave a legacy worthy of rememberance.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 03:00 AM

At this point its not even breakable. Why break it now, in the final years of his career. They should just keep pitting him against guys I don't mind seeing buried, like Mark Henry and Umaga. Seriously, if you're gonna end it now after all these years why would you have it be an ol, injury-prone batista. If they were planning on breaking it at some point it should have gone to Orton at WM21. Now it should remain intact, with one exception: Edge. The undefeated Edge should make a push for his streak, at least for a while and hes younger and more deserving to go over. Other than that I say he stay perfect at WM.
If this match happens (which I hope it doesnt), I'm rooting for Taker to go over and win the title. Might not be the best thing for the company but its what I want, especially if its his last wrestlemania.

Why not have Batista face off against Edge or Orton jumping brands after a Rumble win.

Rammsteinmad 11-28-2006 03:50 AM

There's always Benoit. :D

Skippord 11-28-2006 04:07 AM

GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

El Fangel 11-28-2006 04:29 AM

Actually I have always believed that if the streak should ever be broken it should be Kane, and it makes sense, and the little "brother" gets elevated to new heights, hell maybe a world title shot, but don't get too hopefu, and the legacy ending would make sense, and I agree with Skippord.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 04:39 AM

I dont think the legacy ending does make sense. If you end it now, then what did it ever mean. If he loses to Batista, then why didn't he job to Orton? Why didnt he job to Kane at 14? Why didn't Flair win his big match back in 02?
Its just stupid to me to come this far and have it broken by a guy who doesn't need to get over, and isn't going anywhere but down or onto the injured list until his eventual retirement only years into his late career stint at the top.
What is gained from this match? Nothing is gained, and a lot is lost.
Under the scenario that Taker in fact wins the title, which I'd prefer of the two outcomes, its still shitty. He has nothing to prove as a champion and he has his wrestlemania title win. Undertaker is one of few guys who is actually more interesting without the belt, and unless its part of a final run before retirement he shouldnt hold the belt again when theres a bunch of wiser choices.

Mercury Bullet 11-28-2006 12:59 PM

If this is the matchup then I hope Taker wins, has little glory run with the title, and then drops the belt to someone who is on the rise and preferably never been champ before. Then Undertaker can retire fresh off a title run and put over someone who maybe can be the future of the business.

Rammsteinmad 11-28-2006 01:13 PM

What about... THE POUNCE!!!!!!!! :shifty:

St. Jimmy 11-28-2006 01:16 PM

I'd say give the streak-ending victory to Ken Kennedy. DUH.

Destor 11-28-2006 04:23 PM

And we all know anything from Gerweck.net is always true, right? Anyways I could see a match between Bats v Taker. And would a great idea. That's a WM match right there. Every wrestling fan that doesn't have a computer loves Taker and Bats is DAMN over. Should be hot.

Destor 11-28-2006 04:23 PM

Though I do not see see Dave beating Taker if this match takes place.

El Fangel 11-28-2006 04:39 PM

John Cena should fight and beat Taker at Wrestlemania, It makes sense because the fans love him so much, and wish we would win every match.

Undertaker's WM Streak *Possible Spoilers*

It is being reported that The Undertaker's WrestleMania winning streak is coming to an end next year at the hands of Batista.

Of all the potential people I had in mind to end the streak, Batista wasn't even on the list.

But is this neccessarily a bad thing? If so, who would you guys prefer to see take Taker's streak, considering the chances are that he is losing at WrestleMania 23?

http://www.wrestlingexposed.com/headlines/18131.shtml

McLegend 11-28-2006 05:48 PM

I would prefer to see him lose to Edge or like some young guy.

Kane Knight 11-28-2006 05:54 PM

Or perhaps someone who gives a fuck about wrestling.

Kane Knight 11-28-2006 05:55 PM

Not that Edge doesn't care, I'm just saying, if they're going to use someone to break the streak, why the guy who's phoned it in of late?

NeanderCarl 11-28-2006 06:02 PM

I think if Taker is going to lose at Mania, they should pull him off SmackDown ASAP, or at least have him lose a cross-brand match. The fans may resent a guy like a C.M. Punk or a Lashley if they beat the 'Taker so soon into their careers, though. I think a guy like Edge is perfect (and it would be undefeated streak vs undefeated streak).

Kane Knight 11-28-2006 06:15 PM

If it was cross brand, it'd be MAKE IT OR BREAK IT for both Smackdown and Raw or ECW. I don't think we can afford to risk that much potential BREAK IT.

Caged Heat18 11-28-2006 06:16 PM

I'd like to see Edge end Taker's streak, but I'd prefer Kennedy. I really do not feel Batista is a good choice. He's already made.

El Fangel 11-28-2006 07:25 PM

Personally I would love to see Kane do it, third time lucky, if you know what I mean.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 08:35 PM

If its gonna be anyone, I'd vote Edge. But I'd rather not see it happen at all.

PullMyFinger 11-28-2006 08:47 PM

Only one wrestler deserves to defeat Taker at WM. Kane.

M-A-G 11-28-2006 08:54 PM

Has Kane EVER beaten the Undertaker in any match?

M-A-G 11-28-2006 08:54 PM

By the way, the streak should just stop at 15-0.

Wait, that casket match where he set Taker on fire. Only one I can think of offhand.

M-A-G 11-28-2006 09:01 PM

That wasn't a match involving Kane. It was HBK vs. Undertaker

M-A-G 11-28-2006 09:04 PM

These are all the Taker/Kane matches I can think of at the moment:

WM 14: Taker won
Unforgiven Inferno Match: Taker won
Breakdown 1998 for the WWE Title: No contest
Survivor Series 1998: WWE Title tournament: Taker won
World Tag Team Titles vs. Kane and X-Pac: Taker and Big Show won
SummerSlam 2000: No contest to my recollection
WM 20: Taker won

WTF???

M-A-G 11-28-2006 09:05 PM

Fully Loaded 1998: World Tag Team titles vs. Kane and Mankind: Taker and Austin won.

Azriel 11-28-2006 10:16 PM

Yeah, if anyone ends Taker's streak, it should be Kane

OWW says that Kane defeated Taker back in 1998 to win a WWF title shot... now granted, it says that Mankind helped Kane defeat Taker but it's a singles win.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 10:57 PM

Kane never wins. Its hard for me to remember a PPV match or a big match that hes even won.

El Fangel 11-28-2006 11:01 PM

Vs Steve Austin, at KOTR, his 24 hours of glory.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 11:15 PM

haha i know, and it was an anticlimactic win as a result of run ins.
Seriously tho, hes main evented probably 15 or 20 ppvs since his debut, whether it be title matches, fueds with undertaker, or other uppercard matches and hes only won once or twice.

I certainly like Kane. Everyone does. He still manages to draw and remain interesting when used right, and hes a great go to guy when you need a fresh face in the main event scene. Unfortunately, he never goes over and its a shame that he never got his due and his ship has likely sailed.

I'm just pointing out how remarkable it is that he remains so well liked and still works as a "dominant monster/unstoppable force" when hes been jobbed out in virtually every fued or title shot hes been involved in.

And I can't be sure but I'm pretty sure Vader beat the Undertaker clean at Royal Rumble 1997. There was no outside intereference that I can remember but I think the ref messed up somehow causing Taker to chokeslam him after the match.

Jeritron 11-28-2006 11:56 PM

Hes been beaten cleanly a number of times. However hes usually a face so that prompts him to either go over or have an opponent whos dirty or ruthless.
I think Caged was just poking fun at his tendency to resist jobbing.

Mr. JL 11-28-2006 11:56 PM

Angle beat Undertaker this years NWO'06 by pinfall. Lesnar and Austin are the only other ones I can think of at the moment though.

Mr. JL 11-28-2006 11:58 PM

I said it in another thread that it is pretty stupid to have a guy who is only 3 1/2 years younger than the UNdertaker end his streak.

Jeritron 11-29-2006 12:03 AM

agreed, and as I said in another thread as well, its even dumber to have a guy whos already as over as he'll ever be break the streak when hes likely to get injured, fade out or be forced into retirement down the road.
I don't know what they think is so great about Batista. I was shocked when I found out how old he was.

El Fangel 11-29-2006 12:10 AM

I will die laughing if he does beat Taker at Mania, and trips on the rampway, injuring himself.

Jeritron 11-29-2006 12:17 AM

Thats assuming he makes it to Wrestlemania without getting injured. I can see him tearing a muscle and forfeiting the belt again at any moment.

Someone else already said it, if Orton didn't beat him for it 2 years ago, Taker shouldn't lose. Put him in there against Umaga and do that Undefeated vs Undefeated match. Have him get DQed or someting against Cena that way he still is going into that match. Yes the match will suck but will kill two birds with one stone..

Send Umaga back where he belongs to Midcard Hell and Takers streak continues.

It's not about young vs. old but rather fresh vs. stale. Despite his age, Batista's one of the hottest commodities they've had over the past few years. I'm not saying he should be ending the streak or anything just pointing out something.

The Show Off 11-29-2006 02:43 AM

The Undertaker better not lose to Batista at Wrestlemania, it'll be such a waste of an instantanious to put someone over huge. I hate Batista and I think that he's a lazy wrestler that doesn't care much for the buisness. Not only that but he doesn't even have a good sense for the buisness. That all being said Batista is over like no one else in the WWE. He doesn't need this, their are only like three people in the WWE that deserve that Wrestlemania win over Undertaker.

1. Kane: Because he has gone his entire career doing everything the WWE ever wanted him to do, and he deserves to have a big moment in the sun.

2. Carlito: A guy who is on the cusp of greatness and if he gets that big victory he could always use it to get more over.

3. Shelton Benjamin: Very similar to Carlito.

But then again we all know The Undertaker will use his pull to get the victory at Wrestlemania so all will be right with the world.

Afterlife 11-29-2006 03:55 AM

I'd rather Taker win. If not, then Kennedy beats him.

Afterlife 11-29-2006 03:59 AM

And the stipulation in Kennedy vs. Taker at WrestleMania would be that it's a plain, old-fashioned rasslin' match. No weapons, no cheats; Kennedy beats him man to man. That's how you end the streak; that's how you put someone over.

The One 11-29-2006 04:53 AM

John Cena.

FU, pin, 1-2-3, clean.

It's the only reasonable choice, that or maybe Umaga. Ooooo or how about Chris Masters, now there's a guy who has da skillz.

Bad Company 11-29-2006 05:57 AM

Too late for this, it should of been orton.

addy2hotty 11-29-2006 07:44 AM

No no no!

If Batista takes Takers streak, then WWE has used the 2nd of its 3 strikes with me.

El Fangel 11-29-2006 08:36 AM

What was the first strike?

Corkscrewed 11-29-2006 08:45 AM

Lesnar beat Taker clean, I think. That would be the last time it happened to my recollection.

Anyway, Batista? I agree that the winner should be a young guy. Cena, Orton (why not give him another chance?), Kennedy, or even CM Punk. Batista can't have many years left in him even if he stays healthy, so what would the point be?

Mr. Nerfect 11-29-2006 08:57 AM

They should so have Kenny help Mr. Kennedy win his alleged Last Ride Match with The Undertaker at Armageddon. Have him stat calling himself "Ken Doane" and working some great matches with Chris Benoit, etc. Everyone admits Doane has talent, but when he challenges The Undertaker to a match at WrestleMania, people talk about how crazy he is.

Basically make it WrestleMania 21, done right. Ken Doane gets the pinfall, and ends the streak of The Undertaker. You have a new icon.

He's in a feud with Taker right now and drawing it out until WrestleMania makes so much sense. Batista has nothing to do with Undertaker at the moment, and using Kenny for this match seems wacky in a way. Maybe WrestleMania 24.

You know, 10 years ago, if there was an internet used by marks, I bet Smarks would have been saying the same thing, just replace Undertaker with Andre and Batista with Hulk Hogan.

The issue here is: Batista is a big star, like him or not. He is only one win away from what many would picture as "Immortality." That win? The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. I've actually remembered seeing the Orton feud and thinking "Orton isn't a big enough name to pull this off. If it were Batista at Wrestlemania Next Year..."

Yeah, my opinion means shit, but I actually think that maybe not from a wrestling standpoint, but from a business standpoint, this is a good idea. Streaks like these are made to be ended. It puts over the guy who ends the streak. You could say it should be Carlito or Shelton or Doug Basham until you're blue in the face. The things is, the casual fan can't see Carlito beating the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. The casual fan can't see Shelton Benjamin beating the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. The casual fan CAN see Batista beating the Undertaker at Wrestlemania.

For the record, I'm saying that as a Carlito fan. He should have the Intercontinental Title by then, though.

Stickman 11-29-2006 03:01 PM

The only person that would end UT streak would be Cena as he is Hogan of our day and they'll ram him down our throats.

addy2hotty 11-29-2006 03:15 PM

I don't know why they don't do a DX - Brothers Of Destruction feud heading into Mania. Something that hasn't been done before.

After DX defeat Orton & Edge eventually, DX come out after on Raw and announce that they are the most dominant team in the WWE, ever. So many teams (Trips could list them) have tried to keep them down, but no-one could ever end DX.

The lights go out, the fire pyro goes and out come the Brothers. Taker gets on the mic and says that there is one team they have never faced. One team that has been through life & death together. Triple H is one of the many members of the streak, and it's time to add Michaels to it.

Michaels and Trips could do their funny faces, run away when they come to the ring. They could run off saying they aren't facing them, 'we aren't crazy'. They could then show up on SD to cost them a match or something. Build up the cowardly nature of them. Have them feud across the Royal Rumble, where Triple H is dominating, and Kane followed by Taker come out. Keep the Brothers chasing DX and never really catching them, while DX don't do anything particularly BAD to them, until say, a month before Mania.

Have a contract signing on Raw, have DX, still playing up the scared act, and during the signing they jump the brothers, busting them both open with sledgehammers and baseball bats. Have DX turn nasty at that single point, the crowd would be all over them. Have them say that Takers 'legacy' will dengerate in front of everyones eyes, as people have forgotten who they are.

Have them mock the Brothers for the weeks running up to Mania, with Taker doing his normal 'smoke around the ring/video package thing' that they always do.

Then have the match at Mania, have Taker pin Michaels.

This gives Kane a main event match at Mania, the match will sell on its own, gives DX something fresh and an ACTUAL team to go up against and eliminates the huge problem that there just isn't any mid-to-upper carder on any show that currently deserves to take Takers streak.

It's hard to know what you mean, Destor, when you quote the whole post. :p

If you mean Batista, I suppose you're right. But I would like the Kennedy/Taker feud to go there instead of create a totally new feud between Batista and Taker. Just me though.
