Watchmen
Okay, so the guys who are doing 300 are now working on Watchmen, another Alan Moore Graphic novel (Moore did V for Vendetta).
Watchmen's a great "comic," but I seriously worry about someone's ability to pull it off well. Partially because of what has been done with V, and partially because the idea's been around for a while and always failed to make it to the big screen. |
The straight fact is this. If you go in trying to compare it to the book, and put it on the same pedastal, you will be dissapointed.
If you go in just to watch it as a fun movie, I think you will be very impressed. Especially if its the same guys working on it from 300. |
Apparently in the 300 trailer for approximatley one frame you see this:

I don't know. On the one hand, you could say that, on the other hand, Alan Moore doesn't seem to want it made...
...The really sad thing is that it dosn't have to be that way. Transfering from one inherrently visual medium to another is not as horrific an experience as translating between a book and a movie or whatever. People don't do it, but it doesn't mean it can't be done. |

RORSHACK! |
I totally botched the spelling there. I'm too tired for this shit.

Then again after LofEG and Man-Thing, can you blame him?
|
Couldn't say. Didn't watch either. Though I can't blame him after V. That certainly wasn't a case of "It's hard to translate ideas to the movies," it was a case of two self-righteous cunts deciding to take an old idea to bash a message over our heads.
I don't mind adapting a movie from another source. Some of these adaptations annoy me for different reasons. |
I like Zach Snyder as director. Casting is gonna be interesting, especially for Rorschach, who will likely receive the most fan scrutiny (I like Robert Knepper from Prison Break for Rorschach btw). Snyder apparently wants to keep the Tales of the Black Freighter stuff in, which I disagree with.
In the end, of course it will be inferior to the books. But I can't wait for it anyways. Also, rumour is Gerard Butler has been cast in a role. Hasn't said who, but I would bet on The Comedian. |
Rorschach should be easy to cast, provided they haven't rewritten him into a smooth ladies man.

Lord of the Rings had parts cut out to add in a romance that was never really present in the books. V for Vendetta cut parts so that they could include a subplot about Room V and all the evils of this secret conspiracy. Eragon had important parts to better include...I don't even know how to put that one. Maybe, by keeping in this worthless sideplot deal, they will feel they've filled their quota for extraneous crap, and won't throw in random shit. Sure, they're excise something important, but at least it won't be for a sex scene between Rorschach and Ozymandias, Brokeback_Style. |

|
I forgot about the link between 300 and this, until Loopy posted.
I fear this movie will suck ass if anyone tied to 300 is involved. |
So, Ain't It Cool News is reporting that 3 offers for roles in the movie have gone out: to Patrick Wilson for Dan Dreiberg, Jude Law for Ozymandias, and................Keanu Reeves for Dr. Manhattan?!??
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32743 Now remember, this is AICN, so take this with a large grain of salt. And even if it is true, it's only offers, which doesn't necessarily mean they're in. Personally, I don't mind Law for Ozy, and I really love the idea of Patrick Wilson as Dreiberg. Keanu tho.....well, let's just say I'm a little skeptical. |
Oh and Jackie Earl Haley from Little Children is rumoured for Rorschach.
|
The only romance in the LOTR books was between Frodo and Sam, so they added some heterosexual dynamic between Aragorn and Arwen. Oh fucking well, it made for a better movie trilogy.
|
I must admit I liked V for Vendetta

Big update from Comic-con:
Most of the cast has been announced: Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach Patrick Wilson as Dan/Owl Billy Crudup as Dr. Manahttan Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian Stephen McHattie as Hollis Malin Akerman as Laurie There's also been some rumours of Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt, but nothing was said about that. I like the cast, except I'm not sold on Malin Akerman. The few things I've seen her in ahsn't given me an impression of much range. Other points from Comic-con, taken from Ain't It Cool News: -Sets are being built in Vancouver right now, including a New York City backlot. Not going to be 300 style, very little digital work except on Mars and in Antarctica. -Think more SE7EN than SIN CITY in terms of production design. -Warner Bros is behind an R-rated film. -It is period. 1985. There was talk of updating it, but Snyder said it never felt right making it about the War On Terror instead of the Cold War, so he insisted it be set in 1985. Warners agreed. -While it's not a hard rule, he is going to be using the original comic as storyboards. He'll use them to set the framing for most of the movie. -The casting was not an exercise in marketing, big names avoided. -Alan Moore is not involved. He asked for his name to be taken off the project way back when it was first being developed and Snyder is honoring that... but he does hope that this will be the first film made from one of his properties that Moore will eventually think "wasn't fucked up too badly." -Release date is 03-06-09. -David Gibbons has gotten behind the movie and has frequently given his thoughts on the script and art. |
Brief interview with Snyder at AICN: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33491
Biggest news is tht the Tales of the Black Freighter storyline is cut. |
Hardly surprising.
|
Update: Carla Gugino cast as Sally Jupiter.
|
I don't know much about Watchmen, all I know is it’s about a bunch of superheroes and one of them gets killed so then there’s an investigation by the other superheroes.
I’m not going to do loads of reading into it, as with guys like KK, they know so much about story, no matter what the film makers do, you’re always going to be a little disappointed with the outcome. I went into V for Vendetta only knowing that Hugo Weaving was a good guy terrorist and the Wacked out brothers were involved, that was enough to gain my interest, I didn’t know there was such a detailed story to go along with the idea and I loved it, I think it’s better if I do the same with watchmen |

I walked out of Batman begins with a 3' (Roughly one meter) erection. It IS possible to please the fans, and it's even likely if you know how to do it. Most people, unfortunately, slap the name on the movie and that's that. So people like KK who know about the story may not be disappointed. If you see a fat yank with sunglasses walking around with a 4' erection, you know what happened. ;) |
I am excited for this movie...
|
I am currently reading this on the recommendation of the Destroyer.
Not a huge comic book fan, though lots of praise I see. |

Chuck Jones, young man about town. |
Didn't care for the Watchmen.
There. I said it. |
Holy shit man, are you crazy.

ROBERT DUVALL!!!!!
|
They'd better not fuck this up.
|
I downloaded the comics, and I'm only 4 issues in and I'm in love with it. Dr. Manhattan is such a awesome, complex character.

Just finished reading this. Had been meaning to for a long time and finally went out and did it. Amazing.
|
It's rumored that Gerad Butler will be the Sailor in the Black Freighter and it will be made seperate from the film....DVD extra or maybe a short before the movie, maybe it's own movie....who knows.
Btw here is a cast list for those who don't know. http://www.empireonline.com/features....asp?NID=21451 |

Wow. They actually made the Owl costume look cool. I was worried that it wouldn't translate well from the page, but it's actually pretty sweet.

The Comedian looks excellent. They all do, but that's right on
I wish they showed Dr. Manhattan |
Yeah, The Comedian is my favourite. He looks dead on, like a real sleazy sonuvabitch.
|
|
Looks like Johnny Knoxville lmao.

Batman? No for serious, looks awesome, also, I want to be on that girl. |
wow the minutemen look hot as fuck
|
Apparently there's also gonna be a Tales of the Pirate Guy on the Raft Doing Stuff animated movie released on DVD days after Watchmen gets released in theatres.
"The second film, tentatively called “Tales of the Black Freighter,” follows a side “Watchmen” storyline about a shipwreck and will arrive in stores five days after the main movie rolls out in theaters. The DVD will also include a documentary-style film called “Under the Hood” that will delve into the characters’ backstories." |
lol Hooded Justice
|
Damn, I can't believe I'm actually getting excited about this one now. Those costumes look badass.
|
Although off topic, the film company i often work with/for often work with Alan Moore in my hometown, which is also his. I passed him in the office once but failed to realise who he was!
|
I'd stay away from him
that guy is fucking crazy |
I know lol after my 'boss' told me I'd just missed him, I looked at his wiki page and he's like a practicing wizard or something who worships some snake god. But fairplay to him the man has a talent and has produced some awesome pieces of work.
|
Glycon The Snake God
|
Who do you think would win in a triple threat -
Glycon The Snake God http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-statuette.jpg VS The Basilisk in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets http://www.3dawards.org/2003/report/film/Basilisk.jpg VS Adder from The Animals of Farthing Wood http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2..._ha2/adder.gif |
Glycon definitely
I mean he is a snake god |
yeah i'm ready for this now
|
Just saw the full trailer before Dark Knight. I cannot wait to see this movie.
|
Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/watchmen/
Looks beautiful. Love the stylized look. Dr. Manhattan looks fucking dead on. |
You literally beat me by a couple of minutes on this, Blitz.
Trailer looks excellent. |
Looks spot on, which means it looks great.
All they have to do is make this movie true to the graphic novel and it's a guarunteed great movie |
I know nothing of Watchmen, but I fully trust David Hayter with his screenplay writing.
|
going to see the shit out of this movie
|
For some reason they didn't show the trailer with the Dark Knight in the UK, which is beyond annoying. :(
It looks very, very promising though. |
It's expected to have a running time of 3 hours, and the studio wants it to be cut to 2 1/2. Hopefully it stays at 3.
|
shit even at 3 hours it will be hard to put everything in. not that i expect that they will, but the more time they are given the happier i'll be.
|
I know nothing about this comic but after seeing the trailer whilst at Batman, I looked into it a little bit and thought it's premise looked kewL.

Different teaser, shown during the 2008 Scream Awards. |
Hottttttttttttt new trailer
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808406490/video/10658091 Gahhhh can't wait. |
ohmygod that is going to be so sick
|
Holy shit, yes.
|
Is there seriously anything more badass in the world than Rorschach in that trailer. Especially at the end.
|
I don't think there's ever been a more badass line in any comic ever.
|
Goddammit that looks so badass.
|
Gonna be so badass. My doubts lessen with each batch of promotional material that comes out.
I feel like the interest in this movie has grown way past the fanbase too. People who are completely new to the concept and material (average moviegoers) are really interested and pumped about this movie. |
I love the buzz this movie is getting. I never heard of watchmen till I saw the trailer during the Dark Knight. I went and bought it after I saw the trailer and loved every minute of it. I am as excited now much as some of you guys who read it years ago.
|
I read the comic book...and i lost some interest. Every character would be the character I love if they were in seperate stories, but they are all in the same one. It would be like if Bender, Master Shake, Starscream, Bart Simpson, and Peter Griffon were all in the same show trying to out jackass each other. It just wouldn't work when no one is a straight man.
|
Also, there was an air of predictableness about the book...maybe it is because it has inspired so many other stories I already know. It would have been much cooler if I read this before I got jaded.
|
This seals the deal that you're a retard

Those videos are fucking excellent. I cannot wait for this movie. I am just getting more and more excited.
|
cant wait for this. im halfway through the graphic novel right now.
|
|
Can't wait to see this, I really had my doubts about it but after seeing the first trailer I was amazed by how well they pulled it off. I always thought Watchmen would be ruined if it would be made into a movie, but Mr. Snyder convinced me. I really love what they did with the NBS news and Keene Act shorts and I can't wait to see Under the Hood as well.
