Why do good shows get canceled?

I find it hugely irritating:mad:

PapaGeorgio 08-20-2007 06:41 PM

Same reason Larry the Cable guy makes so much money. Majority of people don't like smart, witty shows.

ct2k 08-20-2007 06:57 PM

Its almost always due to ratings, even when a show is fucked around in the schedule the tv execs expect high ratings. Hell The Wire has been threatened with cancellation after every season and its probably the best, most well crafted tv drama ever produced.

Then I guess I have become pretty smart...because the other day my friend let me borrow the new Larry The Cable Guy DVD and I had to turn it off less than ten minutes into it because it was so bad.

FakeLaser 08-20-2007 07:30 PM

Most people are stupid and have horrible taste.

Fignuts 08-20-2007 07:34 PM

I am so pissed about carnivale getting cancelled that I could kill an oak tree.

Mr Regal 08-20-2007 07:36 PM

I want to know who John Doe is.

Is that too much to ask damn it:rant:

Blitz 08-20-2007 07:39 PM

Veronica Mars :'(

Fignuts 08-20-2007 07:49 PM

Seriously the second season finale of carnivale had me hooked so bad.

YOUR Hero 08-20-2007 08:04 PM

just watch sports.

ClockShot 08-20-2007 08:05 PM

I wanted The Black Donnellys to stick around. But that didn't last long. Neither did that comedy show that took it's place either.

loopydate 08-24-2007 02:38 AM

Sports Night
Firefly
Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip

Yeah, my heart's been broken a time or two (or... I guess... three) in the last few years. It's always the sharp, character- and dialogue-driven series that go. Clears up more room on the schedule for more spin-offs, reality shows, and fat-guy-with-hot-wife sitcoms.

Thank God that there are actually people who watch Heroes, Lost, and 24 (although this past season was bad) or else I'd be in pretty bad shape.

Splaya 08-24-2007 10:23 AM

24 is gonna be the tits this year. They have already scrapped the start of production twice cause they are not happy with what has been thrown forward. He truly wants the show to get back to it's ways

That's not even ratings, the Wire draws huge numbers. It's not "The Sopranos" Huge, but little is.

Sometimes, cancellations are based entirely on stupidity. Look at the Sci Fi channel. Battlestar Galactica's ratings slip, so they cancelled Stargate. :wtf:

But yeah, often enough, it's ratings. I love how they put "Drive" up against some of the biggest shows on TV and bounced it around in the schedule, but expected it to draw huge ratings.

Studio 60 deserved to get canceled. It went from one of the most awesome shows to a terrible fucking show in about half a season.

And as for Larry the Cable Guy, he himself is actually a smart guy. He was doing stand up for some time not doing well just as plane old guy. Went with his new dumb downed gimmick and became a hit. Got to respect that, nothing like making millions off of stupid people thinking you are stupid.

PapaGeorgio 08-24-2007 01:06 PM

Also Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn was one of my favorite shows. Still so upset that it is gone. Although Colbert Report is pretty pimp. I'd drop daily show and have colbert/tough crowd combo. A man can dream.

D Mac 08-24-2007 01:06 PM

Downloaded the show Drive. Excellent show that died too quick. Just like Firefly.

Stickman 08-24-2007 02:07 PM

Remember when Family Guy got cancelled...holy shit.

Probably the best thing to happen to them.

Same with Futurama.

Russenmafia 08-24-2007 04:52 PM

Angel

Why did they cancel this show, it was excellent.

Shaggy 08-24-2007 07:10 PM

Firefly
Drive
Freakylinks
Greg The Bunny
Dark Angel

Is that sad that four out of those five are named in the first episode of Family Guy when it returned from being canceled?

KingofOldSchool 08-24-2007 07:28 PM

Grounded For Life
Still Standing

IC Champion 08-24-2007 08:40 PM

Family Guy is the goods.

And anyone bashing the show is dead to me.

mrslackalack 08-24-2007 09:48 PM

I liked Smith, but it was only canceled after 3 episodes.

The thing that really gets me in all this, is that Will and Grace was allowed to run for 10 years :(

Oh, and how could I forget Freaks And Geeks?

That truly is :wtf: worthy. 10 fucking yrs?

ct2k 08-25-2007 07:24 AM

I'm gonna upset KK by saying this but meh, Stargate should never have gone on for as long as it did, Enterprise was just getting really good around the time SG1 was getting far too tiresome, not to mention Firefly > everything.

Mr Regal 08-25-2007 07:25 AM

ct2k you have lost the plot massively lately, shut yo yap.

Although Enterprise was very enjoyable.

Bad Company 08-25-2007 09:05 AM

I loved Enterprise. :(

Enterprise? Good?

Now I know you're high.

Though Firefly>All.

Avenger 08-29-2007 08:17 PM

Star Trek's gay.

ct2k 08-29-2007 09:11 PM

Avenger is now dead to me

YOUR Hero 08-29-2007 11:09 PM

yeah I didn't mind Enterprise, although I didn't watch it regularly.

Scratch that. What I liked about it was it's concept. The show tended to be lacking in passion. Also, not to geek out, but it didn't follow it's own created timeline. Kinda silly, OH WELL

Hopefull Heroes sticks around.

Blitz 08-30-2007 01:40 AM

The Heroes backlash will begin this season, irregardless of how good/bad the series actually is. But I see it going 5 years at least.

Bad Company 08-30-2007 08:35 AM

T'Pol was hot :o

MVP 08-30-2007 02:02 PM

Futurama will forever be the worst cancellation of all time

No, and it wont be, it's actually the second longest running animation after The Simpsons.

Hopefull Heroes sticks around.

It was an interesting concept.

Unlike just about every Star Trek Fan ever, I watched it without worrying about continuity, or comparing it with the "almighty" Picard or Kirk, but it really was awful. Even by Star Trek standards.

What amazes me is that they gave it like three seasons to "turn around." I wish other shows got that kind of chance...Jeez.

Heroes gets a bye for the next two years. With the ratings it did, it could probably bomb for the whole next two seasons and get a third. I'm happy about that, by the way. Sure not complaining.

IC Champion 08-31-2007 11:42 AM

Star Trek is the worst show ever made.

Bad Company 08-31-2007 11:53 AM

lol are you fucking serious?

I thought the same, but it's a startrek marathon on TV here on Sundays, shows everything except that one with the chick Captain. I decided I'd watch it, and I'm hooked. It's fucking awesome. Especially Next Gen.

RP 08-31-2007 12:23 PM

wow King of the Hill is still on???

Stickman 08-31-2007 01:09 PM

I didn't mind Star Trek the Next Generation but the rest were shit.

Azriel 08-31-2007 01:56 PM

I think Will and Grace lasted only 6 seasons, but still it really overstayed its welcome

IMDB lists it as lasting 8 seasons.

VERY few shows last beyond the 7 season cap that media has put on them. That W&G not only hung in, but outlasted that cap is just phenomenal.

Stickman 08-31-2007 02:38 PM

Remember Mad About You?

ron the dial 08-31-2007 02:50 PM

Freaks and Geeks should not have been cancelled, although it works very well as just a one season show. I'm almost done with season three of Arrested Development right now (didn't watch it when it was on TV), and am really disappointed that it got cancelled.

thecc 08-31-2007 02:50 PM

Titus :(

Stickman 08-31-2007 03:22 PM

I had America's Next Top Model, I wish it was cancelled.

Shadow 08-31-2007 03:38 PM

John Doe irks me so much because it ended on a cliffhanger. Not just any cliffhanger...one that made you go "What the Fuck!?"

Also Surface. Again, another show that ended on a cliffhanger and nothing gets resolved. Ever. Pisses me off when they do this to good shows.

What amazes me is twofold: One, that people are drawn into such dinner theater so readily, and practically fap to it. Two, that I've enjoyed so many of the actors in something else. Gargoyles, for example, which had a lot of the TNG guys. Frakes was Xanatos, for example, and did agood job. The guy who played Data was Puck, and was also incredibly entertaining.

G 08-31-2007 04:16 PM

Knight Rider deserved so much more than 4 seasons.

It just got really good in season 4 with SPM and a non-thugish black guy. :D

Stickman 08-31-2007 04:59 PM

I don't know how the Krusty the Klown show has not been permanently cancelled yet.

Gargoyles the cartoon? God I loved that show.
