Santino Marella

Surely the guy has to be a shoe in for "Character of the Year" at the usual end of year awards. Watched his promo with Austin again from RAW and its easily the funniest thing I have seen on WWE in a long time. From his J.R orgasm comment, Ripping the director of the Condemmed to pieces and dropping the DVD and scraping it with his shoe, it was

Its amazing that after starting off as a bland boring babyface that he became this amazing Heel who is extremely funny. The future is bright for Marella.

Kane Knight 11-08-2007 03:55 PM

Well, I suppose the term "Character" is relative.

Blue Demon 11-08-2007 03:58 PM

I don't mind the guy

RP 11-08-2007 04:03 PM

I pretty much agree. But the whole Austin thing can only take him so far. He'd gunna have to come up with more stuff. But for now, its really really funny to me.

I would also like to point out that that was a MARVELOUS Stunner sell.

KingofOldSchool 11-08-2007 05:07 PM

Marella should adopt the old DiBiase loaded glove gimmick.

Stickman 11-08-2007 05:23 PM

I love the can of ass whip.

Skippord 11-08-2007 06:04 PM

He could not suck any worse

SammyG 11-08-2007 06:40 PM

I love Santino. Amazing Stunner sell, yes.

Nark Order 11-08-2007 06:47 PM

All of you that say you don't like him are lying to yourselves.

Santino is best thing on Raw for sure, funny as hell. I like his matches too.

Dorkchop 11-08-2007 08:36 PM

He is awesome on the mic, but horrible in the ring. If he's always going to suck in the ring, hopefully he can at least learn how to work a crowd.... or just only wrestle guys who know how to make him look good :shifty:

Rob 11-08-2007 08:50 PM

Nothing Santino does can possibly make me dislike him.

Don't be ridiculous. Santino can't wrestle. Daniel Benoit would have owned him.

Wrestle?

IC Champion 11-09-2007 01:19 AM

Santino is the goods on the mic.

Dave Youell 11-09-2007 03:53 AM

I don’t see why everyone rags on his wrestling skills, it’s a different style as he includes more strikes, but since he’s turned heel and had an injury he’s hardly wrestled on TV, most of his TV time have been (excellent) promo’s

Personally I didn’t mind his matches as he brought something different to the table, nothing outstanding, but it was all solid IMO

And he’s the best guy on the mic they have at the moment, he totally outshone Austin in that segment last week and has a great natural charisma with his gimmick.

Just think he’s great

FourFifty 11-09-2007 03:56 AM

He knows how to dish out the can of the ass whip.

Rammsteinmad 11-09-2007 08:06 AM

 at the Stunner!

Cool segment overall. (I missed it last week so thanks DarthTedious).

Y2Ant 11-09-2007 09:56 AM

Cena's never had any wrestling skill and look how far he's gone, who can say the same can't happen for Santino?

Kane Knight 11-09-2007 10:26 AM

Ah, yes. Cena has no wrestling ability.

I should tuck that away with other smark myths, like Punk outpopping DX.

.44 Magdalene 11-09-2007 11:47 AM

But KK, HE ONLY DOES FOUR MOVES OF DOOM LAWLS. Clearly he is physically incapable of wrestling.

IC Champion 11-09-2007 12:18 PM

I like Santino's style in the ring.

Heyman 11-09-2007 12:25 PM

Like I said before, Santino is an AWESOME character, but the WWE (and perhaps Santino himself) have to be careful that he doesn't end up like Christian (i.e. a guy that was way over but never got propelled into the main-events due to him being TOO goofy).

True main-eventers have the ability to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, that is a large part of what killed Christian. To a much smaller extent, I'd argue that Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho also suffered from this.

I have to bring up John Cena.

Skull316 11-09-2007 01:10 PM

with a torn pectoral muscle, i'd wager he currently is physically incapable of wrestling!

And i thought it was 5 moves of dewm?

BigDaddyCool 11-09-2007 01:35 PM

I'm tired of him. He is looking like another Carlito and Ken Kennedy. Decent on the mic in a time where everyone else sucks so he look better than he is. But doesn't do shit in the ring for whatever reason. I'm calling it now. He sucks. Now if he gets back into the ring and has some good matches, I'll change my mind.

Nark Order 11-09-2007 01:58 PM

Well, BDC. True to an extent. But, either Austin just is absolutely god fucking awful nowadays or Santino worked circles around one of the best promo guys of the attitude era.

Also, I don't know where all of this hatred for his ring skills is coming from. He's better than about 1/2 of the roster in ring.

1) The better than half the roster in the ring argument has been used on everyone but Kahli, Mark Henry, and Batista. Those 3 men are not half the roster.

2) When is the last time he has been in the ring?

Anybody Thrilla 11-09-2007 02:14 PM

The last time he was in the ring was with Ron Simmons a few weeks ago. I don't think anybody can pull a good match out of Ron Simmons these days.

I don't know where you're getting "worked circles" around from that video. I really don't. I mean, I could SAY it about anyone Austin was put up against, but I don't think it'd be any more or less true of Boogen or Hornswoggle than of Santino.

Half the roster, by the way, is complete shit. So he's better than complete shit. More glowing praise. And, as BDC has pointed out, it's used for everyone who isn't complete anathema to wrestling.

Theo Dious 11-09-2007 03:55 PM

I'd say that Santino did a great job with Austin; he didn't work circles around him, but he, a guy who a couple years ago had zero TV experience, more than held his own with the top star of a decade, and that's no small feat. Now if he can only polish up his ring work, he'll be a huge asset to the company.

Stickman 11-09-2007 04:12 PM

If he could start destroying guys in the ring that'd be awesome then as the match ends he goes back to goofy and gentle. Or he could be a coward and win all his matches by cheating.

Skull316 11-09-2007 04:19 PM

I give Santino credit, after what was considered a piss poor debut run with the IC title that got stale fast, he's turned his character into something watchable. He's had me laughing on more occasions than one, but I'm interested to see where his promos go from here on out. The thing with Austin is presumably over and that's been 6 weeks worth of his promos. So what now? Will he come up with something funny? Or is it back to heat for him!

Also to claim he ran circles around Austin is stretching it a bit far in my opinion. Sure he held his own, but did Austin's promo seem a bit "toned down" to anyone else but me? Seemed more like a drawn out plug for The Condemned (assuming something to do with the fact that the director was there too?), than a typical Austin promo. Didn't have most of his trademark phrases at all, and seemed like a huge stray from character. So, to compare a top Santino promo, to a toned down Austin promo, is not exactly a level playing field.

Nark Order 11-09-2007 04:22 PM

KK and BDC are right. Everybody sucks. Always. No matter what.

Rob 11-09-2007 04:29 PM

I don't give a fuck if Santino can or can't wrestle. Khali is horrible and I love that big retard.

TerryBoulder 11-09-2007 05:34 PM

Santino has potential but WWE should not be bringing back OLD SHELLS like Stone Cold to make their new talent look like crap.

Y2Ant 11-09-2007 09:08 PM

I have to agree, The Great Khali is quite lovable. And did you hear the Khali chant during the DX segment when Coach was getting twatted out of the ring? I almost marked out. Why were they using him as a face for that anyway :o

Not my intent to come off as a crybaby, as you say. It just seems it's a losing battle on these forums to name anything as being entertaining. For being a wrestling forum, it boggles me how much people hate wrestling. TNA sucks, Orton sucks, Cena sucks, Edge sucks, Santino sucks. Is there anything that people actually enjoy about wrestling on these forums?

Not at all. If something is liked by someone, it is billed "overrated" by the dicks here. Get used to it.

Also, Santino Marella is not even remotely as bad as people make him out to be. The guy is actually quite technically gifted. You mean he hasn't gotten classics out of Chris Masters, Ron Simmons and Umaga?!? Get out! I have a feeling the guy is going to get the MVP treatment. Everyone will talk about how bad he is, then he'll have some great match when he's put in the position too, and everyone will fellate the guy a little, and talk about how much the guy has improved.

He reminds me of Kurt Angle. He was often compared to Angle whilst down in OVW playing the "Boris Alexiev" character, and with his goofy guy who then gets serious in the ring (assuming they decide to push him), is even more reminiscent of Angle.

Santino's got strengths in every area, in my opinion. I think he could be something if he continues to wow people as a performer. He needs to get a clean, decisive win over Ron Simmons. Maybe introduce Standing Armbar as a finishing submission?

HeartBreakMan2k 11-10-2007 01:31 AM

Did Santino salute as he fell back from the stunner? :wtf:

Tommy Gunn 11-10-2007 06:07 AM

I think he did, lol. It looked like he was saluting while being fired out of a cannon. Best stunner sell I've seen in years.

I didn't like Santino when he came in as a face, although I've always loved his music. These days, I'd say he is the best at heel promos on Raw. But considering how dense Raw's mid-card can be, it seems unlikely he'll be able to get a good push. Maybe Santino and Kennedy can form a tag team and win the titles, that'd be a good way for them to get over more.

Nark Order 11-10-2007 02:23 PM

He'll never get over unless they start booking him as an actual threat. The comic heel thing he has going is fantastic but he needs some solid wins over some worth-while opponents or he'll be one of the many that have waded in the fiery pools of midcard hell for years.

Xero 11-10-2007 02:27 PM

Or he could just become a manager like Striker did. They need more managers nowadays.

Yeah because the wondferfully built tag-team division will elevate them, uh, hang on.....

Tommy Gunn 11-11-2007 06:14 AM

It's not doing MVP + Matt any harm over on Smackdown.

Y2Ant 11-11-2007 11:32 AM

The Rock's stunner oversell > anyone else's

Y2Ant 11-11-2007 11:33 AM

although Santino's is at The Rock end of the spectrum of selling the stunner, as opposed to Donald Trump and Linda McMahon at the other end.

A7X 11-12-2007 12:42 AM

Santino Marella is actually one of the very few reasons to watch RAW, the others being that Cena is not there and tbh I'm enjoying Jeff Hardy recently. Santino can improvise a promo better than alot of guys

Skippord 11-12-2007 01:41 AM

Those promos are def. not improvised

Funky Fly 11-12-2007 02:00 AM

Portions of them are, Skippord.

Probably not, but Santino's delivery is still better than, say, John Cena's. Anyone who can make the WWE's crap work is brilliant. Also, the guy is probably one of those guys that is so good at adding in great lines, that the WWE lets him get away with it.
