So why does everyone hate Coheed and Cambria
So I never heard C & C before rock band. All the reviews seemed to make fun and complain that they were in the game, so I wasn't looking forward to playing it when the time came.
But after playing, I have to say it was pretty freaking good. I mean is this just one song thats good and the rest are terrible? Because Welcome Home is a pretty good song imo. I guess if its the vocals, I can understand, as he sounds pretty ridiculous at times, but the fretwork is really fun to listen to. So whats the deal here? |
Maybe its because the song had an "epic" feel to it.
I'm a sucker for that slow building epic stuff. |
Huh?
Who hates Coheed, tell me where they live and I'll sort them out. |
Going to see them play an acoustic set in December :y:
|
Nah I love Coheed. Seen them live multiple times. Always impressed with the shit they do.
|
A lot of people hate them simply because they're "emo."
They're a decent act, a bit pretentious, but more entertaining than most of thei kin. |
I am not a fan of the latest album, but I do thrash the others quite alot. Get a bit of stick from my mates, but don't really care, I like em.
|
Coheed aren't emo :P
|
Coheed are essentially prog rock (which is weird, since they're considered "prog" despite the gratuitous use of a lot of older-style metal sounds :D), who briefly had emo leanings around Second Stage Turbine Blade (which grew less and less noticeable/prominent with each album). Although that is easily their best CD, their follow up stuff has all been really solid, if somewhat self-indulgent at times. Still, I saw them live just after they released the first Good Apollo, and holy Christ, they were amazing.
And I  Claudio. His voice is incredible, and, if anything, gives Coheed an extra dimension of uniqueness over every gruff voiced metal act. |
You did not just call them metal. :|
|
Hey mitch, weren't you the one who ranted at me for being against Emo but listening to C&C?
|
No, I didn't. I said that they were prog rock who utilise some elements of '80s metal. And you'll notice in my final sentence the absence of the word "other" between "every" and "gruff", meaning that I wasn't grouping them in there, either.
So no, Tapiwa. I did not just call them metal. |

I don't know anyone that hates Coheed and Cambria because they are glorious.
|
I hate them
|
I  Coheed and Cambria. They put on an amazing live show.
|
How are they emo?
|
I think a lot of that has to do with his voice. At least that's what people I know tell me. "God, he's got such a whiny, pussy, emo voice." I don't see it. And like Mitch said, their first album does have a few songs with some emo leanings (I guess), but everything after has been pretty far from it.
|
They definitely have a metal influence. They aren't a metal band, but some of the riffs (as Mitch said) are in the style of old school metal.

I agree with you 100% Fignuts.
|
It seems that emo is more defined by the look than it is by the music anyway. If a lot of people that look emo listen to a band, then they must be an emo band. Whatever.
|
Also, if you haven't listened to much Co&Ca check out the song "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" and "The Crowing" off of In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. Or just check out that whole album.
|
I'm a completist, so if every album is part of an ongoing saga, I'll prolly get everything.
|
:y: That's the way to do it. Those songs have some pretty epic build-ups.

A kid that I work told me that he "hated this fucking emo music" when he got in my car and heard Nick Drake playing. And all of his friends are equally retarded. By that logic, anything that sounds remotely sad is emo. As far as I know, that isn't the case.
I guess I just lost track of what is/isn't considered emo because I don't care. |
C&C is okay. I'll leave it at that.

And I love Claudio's voice more than anything. |
The only reason I dont care for the band is because I find the lead guys voice annoying.
The guitar riffs and everything else is bad ass...but it sounds like the lead singer has been kicked in the balls..... |
Yeah a lot of it for a lot of people is the singer
For some reason I like him, he's unique |
Welcome Home is nothing like their other songs. It was an attempt to sound more metal.
They do put on a really good live show, I've seen them twice. In my opinion, they have the talent and vision to be a good band but they can never seem to quite put it together. They try to be progressive but it just doesn't work out in my view. They definitely have the potential though, and there are a bunch of songs by them that I do enjoy. I could never get fully into them though. |
I will further point out how great Coheed are, and that I can't wait to see them play for the fourth time next Feb :)
|
This is just my take: I think it's sometimes that people will hate anything that is considered "mainstream", or someone will just say that they hate a band because they think that is the "cool thing" to do, but they will have a song from them on their ipod or something like that.
The Suffering was an awesome song from them, I think, and I'm listening to Welcome Home now. It's a pretty good song (and must be a hard song to do right in Rock Band). I see nothing totally wrong in their music (although, yeah, the voice is...different). |

I'm telling you right now: Metallica is emo! |
I really like the song "Time Consumer" and uhhhhhhh I forget what other ones I like now.

Yeah fuck off Kane Knight, Rush is WAY different then Coheed.
|
But seriously, I mean, the band sounds exactly like I'd expect an emo band to sound if they aspired to be the emo version of Rush. Pretentious, but still emo. And I know people will bitch at me that they aren't emo, mostly because of the elements that do nick Rush.
But I mean, honestly, whatever. I wouldn't want to be associated with emo, either. |
LOL. I wrote that before Penner whined at me. I wandered off to grab a Coke, and came back and hit send.
|
Was the Coke across the street?
|
naw. Across the room. But my priorities shift easily, as I have ADHD.
|
WHo cares even if it is emo? As if anyone knows what that is at this point.
|
Remember when emo was post-hardcore.... yeah

Not to sound elitist (Though I probably will anyway), but when I think of the fact that the bands famous for starting emo started like, four years after Mission of Burma broke up, and became famous for a lot of the things MoB and their contemporaries did, it kind of amuses me. |
Quote:
Second of all you know shit all about music of you think Coheed is any type of version of Rush. |
I wouldn't go that far. I'm pretty sure Claudio has said that Rush is one of his influences.
|
Fact. You can hear it in his voice, but that similarity definitely doesn't define him. He's go this own style for sure.

I don't like that there is neither a Coheed nor a Cambria in the band, and it resulted in me asking someone at a party which one is the singer. This was met with much knee-slapping merriment, and I promptly left that circle.

Kane Knight says it. It's true.

Sorry, WeX. I know any implication that they are emo devastates you... |
Pure devastation over here.
