Dragonball: Evolution
Directed by James Wong (Final Destination) Produced by Steven Chow (Shaolin Soccer) Stunt team did 300 and The Matrix among other things. Current Cast/Characters: Chow Yun-Fat - Master Roshi Emmy Rossun - Bulma Jamie Chung - Chi Chi Justin Chatwin - Goku James Marsters - 'Demon King' Piccolo There's alot of reasons this may be a disaster; but there's some pretty credible names up there. I'll be watching this project with great interest. <object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yo4t8PeqJ6E&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yo4t8PeqJ6E&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object> |
This movie is even later in coming out than The Simpsons Movie.
But it looks like they're kinda basing it off of Dragonball instead of Dragonball Z, which is definitely a step in the right direction since regular Dragonball was much better. In my opinion. |
They should use elements from all three incarnations. I'd love to see a live action Broly battle.

In fact, Screw Broly, FN Toei |
So the kid from war of the worlds, and that backsreet boy-looking fellow from buffy.
Great casting. |
This can only be really bad or really good, I honestly don't think there's any middle ground :o
Whatever happens, though, I know I'm going to actually be watching this in the theaters. |
I look at this cast and think WTF, shit is crazy.
Gonna be weird if anything. Def too late tho. |
The movie industry officially has or has had too much fuckin' money. :nono:
Yeah, it's Dragonball. ...Not Z. Thank God. The plot involves Goku and Bulma getting the Dragonballs before Piccolo does.
And most of those years in "development Hell" were heresay and rumor propagated by internet fandom, and not any actual period in which a real movie was being worked on. |
Furthermore, Eriko Tamura is being cast as Mai, meaning there may or may not be Pilaf action.
Yeah I'll be seeing this. It's gonna blow hard though
All the Dragonball cartoons were complete trash. An American live action movie based on it has to be the biggest pile of fail ever.
Im interested to see James Marsters in this...
I love the guy and im glad to finally see him in a lead part in a movie. Ive heard there were two screenshots floating around....of Goku and Piccolo Would love to see what Marsters looks like in character |
This will not be good.
The piccolo one is a fan made thing. As is the goku in-costume pic. Only pic so far is the goku street clothes one.
yeah i dont know i loved db and dbz but the cast looks werid. I liked DBZ alot better but it would have been harder to convert into a film.
This has Mortal Kombat Annihilation-level-suck, written all over it.
Now that you mention it, there will be another Mortal Kombat movie in a few years.
If anyone can produce a Dragon Ball movie that is actually good, it would be Stephen Chow. He's just got the right attitude and skill for such a project. I'm not too big on some of the casting, though, but we'll see how it goes.
Robin Shou would actually make a damn good Goku. He's got the martial arts skill, and I think he would play the role well. |
Emmy Rossun seems right for Bulma, as does Jamie Chung for Chi Chi. With some make-up, Chow Yun-Fat would actually be a brilliant Master Roshi. I don't know enough about Justin Chatwin, but hopefully he does well with it. James Marsters is an odd choice for Piccolo, but hopefully he is a surprise.
This is going to be so wondefully stupid, I've gotta see it.
I used to mark out for Piccolo..
Piccolo was the fucking balls.
I always thought that Sam L Jackson would have made an awesome piccolo |
It's been pushed back untill April 2009.
Dunno about James Marsters being Piccalo. I can't wait to see him on the big screen (and I will go just to see him ftr) but it's and odd casting choice.
Looks pretty terrible.
Holding out judgment 'til I see a trailer.

That pic makes me sure of it.
They should have made it purposely cartoony, like the upcoming speed racer flick. WOuld have been able to follow the plot, and character design more closely, rather than take this pseudo-realistic route, which will undoubtedly fail miserably. |
That pic IS awfully cartoony, what are you talking about? The only other cartoony thing they coulda done was try to give him the ridiculously sized anime-hair.
Quote:
they should have went with the giant hair
Yeah if you are gonna blow it you mine as well blow it all the way.
That pic is just a production shot, we don't know how the end result will look after effects and such. I'll still wait.
You wait, it will still suck.
Regal knows
lol that kid looks like such a dork.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHAHA AHA aaaahhhhhh |
Who's the chick?
How can you have any kind of faith in this, after those pics? Come on.

Think he meant who does she play. Cause I sure as fuck dont remember anyone fitting that description in the anime.
Emmy is Bulma... that can't be right...

I would hope they can actually get to the point of making a Frieza and Cell saga, this is for DBZ of course..
Not sure what to go on off those pictures though... Guns? Plus he should have bigger hair. Yeah. Hes not Goku without bigger hair. |
Probably will see it.
Definately will suck. Oh well, at least it is Dragonball, and not Dragon Ball Z. Shame we cannot actually get a Journey to the West instead these crappy knockoffs. |

I saw that a couple days ago and I still don't know what to say :o
Quote:
I too saw that the other day and it reaffirmed my suspicion that this movie is going to suck something fierce.
I wonder if he will have a tail?
Gay needs more Vegeta and Frieza
Fuck no, it doesn't.
Compressing the piccolo, vegeta, and frieza saga into one movie would make it a clusterfuck that would put Mortal Kombat Annihilation, to shame. |
Besides, they're gonna make a ton of money off this, whether it's good or not, so they'll prolly want to save the others for inevitable sequels.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprized to see a scene after the credits involving vegeta, or raditz. |
Not I mean cut out the Dragonball saga and jump to the Frieza saga
The Dragonball saga was the best part though.
I prefer DragonballZ to Dragonball.
Dragonball >>> Dragonball Z
Roshi doesn't even have glasses....or look old. this will suck balls.
The ladies may save it
He does look old and who cares about glasses. Yamcha looks overly badass, though.
Still have medium to high hopes. |
I still want to know if he will have a tail. if not this film can fuck off and die.
I'm gonna say no.
Cause monkey-men martial artist is... stupid. |
Fuck you:foc: you clearly have no clue.

Master Roshi was my favourite character from the show. Piccolo was not far behind. I'm still not too keen on the casting, but I think the actors are both talented enough to make the characters work. Chow Yun-Fat will be a happy-go-lucky porn-loving old man, then become a lethal weapon. It doesn't bother me that he doesn't wear glasses or is skinny and bulks up only for the Kamehameha. Turtle must remain, though. Turtle provided a good mystical element to the Roshi character that could easily be done in the movie, and done well.
Joon Park looks fantastic at Yamcha. He looks incredibly bad-ass. Can definitely see the Bulma character wanting a piece of that, which will work in the movie's favour. Man, are we going to get some Tien and Chiaotzu in this, somewhere? It might be getting it a bit cluttered, though. |
I'm not anal about modifying characters appearances for movies. But they should at least get the most iconic aspect of a character's appearance in.
Roshi without shades is like Wolverine without claws. |
Maybe he will bust out the shades for a Jackie Chun appearance? Even though Chun was Roshi with a wig and without the glasses. I think we'll see them at some point.
What does the Z in Dragon Ball Z stand for anyway.

No, its as easy as not writing it in the script.
Do you know anything about adapting source material to different mediums? Take a look at Mortal Kombat Annihilation and see what sticking too close to source material means. Then look at the first movie and see what reasonable adapting gets you. Funny how Mortal Kombat's movie series offer both extremes. Basically you can't take everything into account with turning something into a film, especially anime, double-especially DBZ. |
Like I said previously. I don't care about adapting every little thing. But the tail is a pretty major factor in not only Goku's appearance, but the actual plot. Especially considering this is a Dragonaball adaptation, not DBZ, despite the name. Annihilation got the costumes right, and thats it. As low budget as it looked, it could have been a lot better if it would have actually stuck to the plot of the game. And if Shao Kahn wasn't such a whiny douche.
Furthermore, 99% of the concepts in DBZ are stupidly ridiculous. If you want the adaptation to be even a little bit close to the source, you are going to have to put wacky stuff in there. |
Seriously, there is a line between being too close to the source, and not close enough. What you're suggesting would change it from being any sort of adaptation outside of using the same names as the characters.
You talk about Mortal Kombat Annihilation being too close. How about Super Mario Bros. for being too far. ANyone else remeber fighting Dennis Hopper in Mario Bros. 3? Really? No one? Maybe they should cast Woody Allen as Piccolo, and paint him pink instead of green, so as not to stray too close to the source material. |
If there was good enough reason for that then go for it.
I just want to enjoy myself when watching the movie. If I want the anime, they're on sale in remastered DVDs. |
By the time Goku fights King Piccolo in the anime/manga Goku's tail is missing anyway, so not as important during that arc. I have a feeling that the movie will start from that point with no more than 5 minutes of explanation of Goku's past :-\
I have a strong feeling he won't be an alien in the movie universe.
wasn't goku like 7 in dragon ball?
Probably.
About Marsters work on the film:

Like I've said a hundred times. I don't care about little things, but core elements should be used in an adaptation. Or else it's not an adaptation is it? Its just someone's idea of an action movie using names from dbz. |
Quote:
I wouldn't call a monkey tail a core element, it was more like one of the many 'rules' to adjust combat in DBZ when the plot called for it. Lets not forget most of DBZ's plots were wacky reasons to see two powerful characters fight in the first place, the Dragonball and Frieza Saga being the only real stories worth telling. I like to think the Frieza Saga is a sequel to the Dragonball thing. |
Quote:
Guy 1: Who is that 40 year old guy Guy 2: Master Roshi Guy 1:What?....he looks nothing like him...Like they put no effort into this movie and just stuck Dragon Ball on it.... |
The only person I really want to see is Piccolo......
Im curious to see how they are gonna make him look. For some reason the only thing that keeps popping in my head is one of those cheesy looking 70s style aliens. |
There was a 4 hour make-up process; he isn't gonna look normal.
I wish James Marsters wasn't in this...cause because of him I have to see this... and I really don't want to.
So I guess March 3rd 2009 is the release date.....judging by that poster...
I can honestly say that this is one of the few movies to ever come out that I know its gonna such horribly.....but I cant wait to go see it. |
I am going to laugh if this movie turns out to be great. Although if it is indeed anything better than absolute shit it will indicate that hell has frozen over.
I would rather them do a 4th series of the anime than this shit, they are ruining a legacy. What's next, live action Akira? That might actually be good though. |
LOL
They are doing a live action Akira! Anyway, a 4th DB series would be nice; but that wouldn't stop a live action series. I wouldn't mind both going on. Dragon Ball coming back to the forefront and all that. |
ROFL I noticed. Leonardo Dicaprio is behind it or something. It is being split into 2 parts and made by WB and part 1 is supposedly coming in summer 2009. It is supposedly to follow the manga more closely than the anime did. Part 1 covers the first 3 'issues' and the second part covers the last 3.
Good luck with the whole telekenitic-birth of the world thing, WB.

She is too cute. Story seems like high school fluff with mortal kombat syndrome, pretty much what I expected when I first heard Goku being a high school student. I need a teaser or something. |
GUYS. This is set in modern times, sometime in the future.
Ok?
