Kane Knight 01-10-2008 11:13 AM

No, but seriously, Kurt Cobain.

ct2k 01-10-2008 11:49 AM

Elvis

Bad Company 01-10-2008 11:54 AM

yeah, the first name that came to mind was John Lennon, and then I thought for about 2 more Seconds and decided on Elvis.

ron the dial 01-10-2008 11:58 AM

I think it comes down to Lennon and Cobain, with the argument being somewhat parallel to Ali vs. Jordan. I really don't know who to pick.

Bad Company 01-10-2008 12:09 PM

Cobain? Are You Serious? More influential than Elvis or Michael Jackson? Come on.

ron the dial 01-10-2008 12:16 PM

Who said anything about influence? ICON.

Lennon: Hogan.
Elvis: The Rock.
Cobain: Gillberg.

ct2k 01-10-2008 01:26 PM

I don't think its Cobain personally, I think Cobain is to Lennon or Elvis what Michael Jordan was to Muhammed Ali in that argument tbh

Requiem 01-10-2008 01:41 PM

Wait.. did someone actually take KK seriously when he said Cobain? Does anyone pay attention in the music forum?

Savio 01-10-2008 01:45 PM

Michael would be up there if he wasn't so weird.

I thought somebody else had actually legitimately put his name forward:o

Thing is someone probably will, hell there were a number of people in the sports forum who think Wayne gretzky is a bigger sporting icon than Muhammed Ali:lol:

KK wasn't serious. I get it. But you know Cobain's going to be said.

Nobody pays attention in general around here, but I'm not the only one who mentioned Cobain.....

St. Jimmy 01-10-2008 04:22 PM

Chuck Manson.

Blue Demon 01-10-2008 04:23 PM

Lennon is up there.....Clapton perhaps as well?

Probably Elvis.

Elvis

Madonna. Just to piss off Wadding.

Kane Knight 01-10-2008 05:46 PM

Seriously, Elvis strikes a chord in a way nobody else does. The Beatles are probably a close second as a group, and Hendrix (Overrated though he is) has to be up there.

FakeLaser 01-10-2008 06:04 PM

Lennon

Kid Robb 01-10-2008 06:37 PM

I'd have Hendrix up there as well

Michael jackson, lol. Of course Cobain is more influential. Seriously, besides being able to moonwalk, who has Jackson influenced or what has he influenced in terms of music.

Look, all MJ influences now are little kids into his bedroom.

Kane Knight 01-10-2008 11:47 PM

Kurt Cobain did, too. He liked to steal songs and little kids' innocence.

GD 01-10-2008 11:50 PM

Elvis. The Beatles had the maximum chart topper albums. Jim Hendrix and Led Zepellin for their contribution to rock. Bryan Adams and Sting are really popular back in south east Asia.

Elvis, followed closely by The Beatles. Personal preference is for the lads, but people worship Elvis in a way that nobody else compares to.

Well I mean you guys have to admit Cobain did leave an insane impact, whether you like him or not. Again I dont want to get too into this because I'm a fan of Nirvana and dont want to see it get obliterated and be online gang raped by you angry Anti-Nirvanists :'(

Zen v.W.o. 01-12-2008 12:12 AM

Every generation has their musical icons...You went from Elvis to the Beatles, to Led Zeppelin and well....well the 80's yeah, whatever, and then Nirvana.

I'd say the Beatles probably created the biggest stir and perhaps the largest impact.

Fignuts 01-12-2008 04:11 AM

My question is, how long til we see another icon?

Damn sure not in this era. Not nessecrily because of lack of talent, but we live in a time where you can literaly choke on the cynicism. EVERYTHING gets shit on at one time or another. And EVERYTHING is "overrated".

That's a rather cynical approach. Though it's hard to foresee a musical icon being produced in an era of corporate pablum. It's not so much that everything's overrated as it is everthing is dumbed down for the sake of consumerism. This happened in the 70s, 80s, and 90s as well, just not to the same level. It was realistically possible for someone to break away from the pack in those decades.

Fignuts 01-12-2008 11:18 AM

Maybe it is, I'm just fed up with people liking music based on whats "cool" to like and dislike, rather than what they actually enjoy. I'll bet half the people who make fun of fallout boy secretly like them. Not saying they're the next icon, but just an example of my meaning.

And while I agree that the industry is corporate driven, I don't think it's quite as bad as the late90's/early00's. Back then everything seemed to be sound alike female pop stars and boy bands. I remember truthfully thinking that rock could die back then.

Kane Knight 01-12-2008 06:22 PM

I don't pay attention to the whole "It's cool to hate" argument, since it seems to be a pop trend in and of itself to accuse people of "just hating it because it's cool" to do so.

The Mask 01-12-2008 06:52 PM

elvis, hendrix and MJ are all good shouts i suppose.

Skippord 01-12-2008 07:36 PM

Are you trying to confuse a fembot or something?

I think Panda Bear, Conor Oberst, and several others are going to be Indie Icons.

Eminem is an Icon for sure. As is Tupac.

It will take time for us to be seperate, when rap is looked on as legitimate as rock (which it should be and is by very many)
