I am pissed off
So watching ECW from last night, an ad comes on advertising the live events coming up here in the UK. The Cardiff show (which is the capital of WALES) was listed as Cardiff, England.
What a disgrace. Where's Class Act Carl when you need him to rant with. |
Isn't Wales, you know, part of England? Kind of like how Princess Diana was Princess of Wales but in the British family...
|
TOVO, this isn't about America so we really shouldn't care about this topic.
|
The Welsh thing they are a different country or something. Anyhow, the British royal family are the monarch of Great Britian. Great Britian is England, Wales, Scottland, and Northern Ireland. To be techincal Wales is a constituent country. From what I understand a constituent country is a fancy name for England's bitch. I mean single American States have more power than a constituent county.
|
Sounds like they're sucking the tit, but don't want to call them mama.
And is it Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico that's mootching off the US but doesn't want to pay taxes or whatever? |
Puerto Rico is techincally a US Terriroty or possesion. Also, it would seem Puertor Rico has more self governing power than Wales.
|
Alright, I think I understand the complaint. Still, a pretty dumb reason to get pissed. It's like somewhere in between WWE promoting a show in Detroit USA and Detroit Washington DC as opposed to Detroit MI.
|
Yeah, Wales is part of the U.K only, not England.
I'd be pretty annoyed to be fair. |

Canada isn't a real country.

I think all the countries in the UK should have a massive war with each other for a couple of years and then hug it out and have tea and biscuits and haggis or whatever.
|
Wales? They named a country after PoisonIvy?

Funniest thing about this is, if Cardiff win the English Football/Soccer FA Cup on Sunday, they'll represent England in European Football tournaments next year.
Something they've no doubt always wanted to do......:naughty: |
And surely they've done enough shows here by now to know we are not England. Every time they come here the faces cut a promo slagging off England just so they get huge pops.
|
Snitsky could be Welsh in my opinion.
If only he'd come out with a miners helmet and a Pot Noodle...... |
So if they said "UK" instead of "England" you wouldn't have a problem?

So London isn't a part of ENgland?
|
No, it's just the capitol.
|
Why is it a different color on that map then?
He's presenting that map to us as fact. All the colors represent a different "country". Going by that map, London is its own country. Also, Jersey is apparently Jersey, London. Or possibly the other capitol, since it's the same color of London. But we all know its not, so that completely invalidates that example. |
Quote:
|
It says regions, not country.
London is the capitol. |
If you look on the map, it's a picture for selecting a region. London obviously has enough population to warrant it's own region to select. I could go get another picture for you if I really must but I'm sure you get the idea and are simply just trying to be awkward.
|
Do you all make fun of Jersey like we do?
|
Who makes fun of Jersey when Ireland is next door.

Can hardly blame them for thinking that since cardiff want to take part in english football leagues/cups..maybe you should've thought of this before.
|
Yup, WWE are passionate followers of football/soccer, and the FA Cup, and will watch the final with avid interest tomorrow.
|
Soccer sucks.

Nobody in North American watches soccer.

No one cares what america thinks. What makes you think we give a damn? The rest of the world loves our sport, we don't need america!
|
In all honesty, I much prefer American sports to ours. As you can probably gather from my avatar. Hate basketball though eww.
I only enjoy 'soccer' at the end of the season with the cup finals and play offs and stuff, when the games actually get competitive. Don't care for it the rest of the year though. Rugby rules though. |
We don't need wales either. I guess you'll be gloryhunting tmrw if cardiff win the fa cup then...
|
I hate Cardiff City. If they win tomorrow working in that godamn city will be impossible.
|
Yeah, I'm from Canada and you feel the same way about soccer as I do hockey.
I love football and basketball, baseball is terrible. The fact you can watch over 90 minutes of soccer and not see goal, or even a scoring chance sometimes is pretty boring. Europes sports are so god awful boring to watch. |
This reminds me of the story that Wales was left off some sort of map entirely.
Not as in there was no border drawn or it was named as England...it was completey GONE! Like someone had cut it off and binned it! lol |

Someone seems a tad bitter that an English competition has a Welsh team in its final! Don't worry, it's okay. |
Football ain't just about goals(in reply to ic), there's actually tactics/skill/loads of other thigns involved, i guess that's what seperates it from american/canadian sports?(;))
Anyhow, i know for a fact you're wrong that nobody up there watches our football. I know plenty of canadians that do/are obsessed by it. |
Quote:
|
Ha, no. I know what you mean though. Suddenly tens of thousands of Cardiff fans will pop up on Sunday if they win, when Ninian Park never even sells out.

Yeah IC, my post was kinda sarcastic in the first part in regards to that seperating it from your sports. lol But i don't think you realize how popular our football is in some parts of canada.
|
Montreal and Toronto, yes. That's because of the high concentration of immigrants mostly. Even than it still pales in comparison to other sports like Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, the NFL and even Canadian football, which for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone watches. Outside of Montreal and Toronto, maybe Vancouver nobody really cares about or watches soccer. It's popularity is growing here though, but it's not like soccer is going to sweep the nation anytime soon.
|
How can Wales have a capital if it isn't a country?
|
Does your State have a capitol?
|
Yeah, my state does have a capital. And in the capital the decide matters of state.
|
And they decide matters of Wales in Cardiff too. Do some research.

Any sport can have drama, ever seen a basketball game come down to the last shot or a game winning drive in football?
|
On the original topic of the thread: I remember having this sort of argument 2 or 3 years ago. England, Wales and Scotland are all separate to each other, but all are part of the island of Great Britain. And the actual country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island, which all of them are under. And yeah, it's all been said roughly in the thread but I thought I'd restate the factual stuff because I can.
On sports: soccer is pretty boring... but cricket... that's a sport to talk about. 2nd most popular in the world! |
How anyone can dislike 'soccer' is beyond me.
Go to a match and experience the atmosphere and whether you like the sport itself or not you'll want to go again. Not soppy sports chanting 'GO TEAM GO' either, you'll hear passionate songs and realise what it's really like to SUPPORT a club. |
Wait... this is the wrestling forum :?:
|
IC, errr yeh, drama is what makes a sport you dumbass. And the fact you think its shit cause there can be a 0-0, really says a lot about your knowledge ont he game.
|
But that is the same with every sport... there are passionate fans of everything, and so by that logic you cannot understand how people dislike any sport at all then. If you disagree with 'that is the same with every sport' then you are no different to the people you were responding to in the first place. People can't like everything; we weren't meant to. We all prefer some things over other things. |
Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks though. If you say 'i don't like the sport' then fine, but don't go telling me it sucks when you clearly dunno what you're on about.
From what i can tell, americans like fast paced non stop goal action sports, our football requires for you to have a bit more of an attention span i guess. |

There is no way on earth any other sport has fans as passionate as 'soccer fans' you may think you support your club passionately but here in the U.K and in some European clubs your football club is like your religion, it becomes a huge part of you and the pride you have for it can not be compared. Thousands upon thousands follow third-tier teams round the country spending thousands and thousands a year and singing their heart out in the freezing rain. Baseball, cricket, basketball, NFL, hockey, whatever, can not be compared. The games itself are probably just as appealing, but the atmosphere and passion is NOWHERE near the same. I understand I may be coming across as ignorant and what-not, but seriously, go to a 'soccer' match in the U.K and experience the atmosphere and you'd know why I'm coming across like this. Anyone else who goes to football in the U.K or Germany or something should agree. Although 'soccer' in the U.S or Australia wherever you're from is probably shit to go see because the only atmosphere is probably men trying to sell hot-dogs. |
The person that made the ad probably thought that Wales was a made up name and that somebody was playing a joke on him/her.
|
Well said noroolz.
|
There's probably something that's just the same for Americans and Australians. I'm not going to believe that it's exclusive to football.
|
I know. I obviously realise that people may dislike 'soccer'. Totally understandable.
Actually you said you didn't understand how people could dislike soccer which is why I posted in the first place. Anyway you're only saying There is no way on earth any other sport has fans as passionate as 'soccer fans' you may think you support your club passionately but here in the U.K and in some European clubs your football club is like your religion, it becomes a huge part of you and the pride you have for it can not be compared. Thousands upon thousands follow third-tier teams round the country spending thousands and thousands a year and singing their heart out in the freezing rain. because you live in England and haven't experienced life in other countries. I don't know about the NFL but the Australian Football League IS like a religion here in Aus, and cricket IS like a religion in India. |
Saying 'I don't see how anyone can dislike soccer' is stupid. Just because you think it's so great doesn't mean everyone else does. That's probably the stupidest/most ignorant thing to say ever. I could say the same about the NFL and you'd probably go off on one.
Granted I'm not really a fan of the sport (soccer), but I still respect it a hell of a lot. I respect any sport, regardless of whether I like them or not. Anything that involves a certain specified level of athleticism wins my respect any day. |
Me saying 'I don't understand how people dislike soccer' was clearly tongue-in-cheek, of course I realise not everyone will like it.
Funny you should say that, seeing how I lived in Spain for 3 and a half years, have been all around the U.S, had a brief stay in Australia too. I don't see cricket fans and Australian Football League fans always in the news and stuff. Would many of their fans travel all around the country/continent to watch their team play, singing almost non-stop etc. And whilst I'm not saying hooliganism is a good thing, surely that demonstrates the passion that 'soccer' fans have. People often think football hooligans are mindless thugs, don't get me wrong, some are. But the majority are not at all, they fight other teams hooligans for the pride and passion of supporting their club etc, like I said, it may be pretty stupid but it does demonstrate passion. I don't know what the Australian Football League is like, no. And maybe I am being small-minded thinking that 100% no way does any other sport have fans as passionate as 'soccer' fans. But I really can't see how it's possible in all reality, but like Mackem said I think it's a cultural difference between British/American/Australians. |
And every team's fans have their ways of expressing support. It's just a matter of different cultures, doesn't necessarily mean one is more passionate than the other, or whatever. Ever watched the Seahawks at Quest Field, or the Redskins at FedEx? Those always seem like loud games to me.
|
You Fools, that map is upside down.

I said 'How anyone can dislike soccer is beyond me', like I said, was totally tongue in cheek, relax. I'm not getting at any other sports at all, all I've been saying is that I can't see how any other sport could have as passionate fans as football fans (in the UK in particular). |
Quote:
For example, third-division teams in England will still get attendances of like 8,000 and more. Leeds - 28,000 av.attendance or something. Taking like 4,000 to places like Plymouth as well. Do you really think the 'Seahawks' would still get more than 3/4 of their fans attending every game if they were relegated 2 tiers down? Would they take several thousand fans to places that are like 7 hours drive away? Another example with my team, Chelsea, you get fans who haven't missed games for 30 years, games in the US, all over Europe etc, even when there's no chance of progressing/winning etc people still attend. In the 1980's Chelse fans were banned from attending an away match at Wolverhampton, yet 7,000 Chelsea still turned up. We used to take 12,000 fans to places like Sunderland and we were absolutely SHIT. I'm not doubting any other sport, and I'm sure they're passionate in their own way, but I really do not believe there is passion like that in any other sport. |
You can't really compare the English leagues with the NFL. There is no relegation, the stadium has a 67,000 capacity in Seattle. Their closest divison game is San Francisco. Just look on a map of the USA to see how far that is. But I'm sure if there was a team within 7 hours drive away, many many fans would make the trip. Americans drive a lot, I'm sure 7 hours isn't half as much to them as it seems to us.
The point is, there's only 8 away games in a season in the NFL, and most of them are hundreds or even thousands of miles away. I guarantee to you that if all 32 NFL teams were located within an area the size of the UK, the away support would be unprecedented. |
Wales is funny. In the average Welsh paragraph, there's like 2 vowels.

socker sux

I'm the only fluent Welsh speaker on the boards. I am awesome.

Welsh sound funny.

WWE's research regarding the UK is pretty lazy. When Drew Galloway debuted on Smackdown! he was said to be hailed from the town of Ayr which is in the Highlands of Scotland.
If they done proper research they will have found out that Ayr is a seaside town and is nearly a 3 hour drive away from the Highlands. So to see they cocked this thing up with Cardiff being in England doesn't surprise me. |
Update:
After that embarrasement for 2 weeks, WWE have since changed the ad now to Cardiff, Wales. I hope they've learnt the error of their ways :) |
What about the isle of man?
|
What about it?
|
WWE will never hold a house show or any other event on Isle of Man. Would make no sense whatsoever
|
Yeah that would be like having a Raw in Hawaii...
|
The Isle of Man, sounds like a title for a gay porn movie :-\
