what is emo

I dunno, I personally find it hilarious how people get so butthurt when a band they like is labelled as "emo". I mean bands like Senses Fail and such, I thought that was basically what an "emo band" was. lol, no idea. I don't understand why people even care. So what is emo anyway, since apparently no band EVER EVER is emo, according to angry nerds on the internet.

ron the dial 05-27-2008 12:41 PM

emo has been a catchall for a lot of different styles of music over the years. right now i really don't know where it stands. frankly, it doesn't matter.

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2008 04:29 PM

emocore started in the 80s and it was hardcore bands like stilllife then it started being applied as emo to bands like sunny day real estate. then it was appplied to everything by the masses, some bands call themeselves emo and these are mainly bands taht don't whine as much as you'd think but have like really slow music with interspersed vocals. I'll post a link to the an album I picked up of a collection of modern emo in a minute, i really don't like those bands actuallly. I threw the cd away.

Triple A 05-27-2008 04:31 PM

Senses Fail is obviously "emo". People just don't want to say it because emo has a negative connotation now. It is cooler to just say they are "indie rock".

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2008 05:05 PM

indie means they aren't on a major label. Although Indie rock is a style now so I see what you are saying. But I would never call senses fail indie rock, i'd call them emo.. or hardcore or.. i dunno

Must spread rep before blah blah blah.

Triple A 05-27-2008 05:10 PM

I know. I am just syaing in general. Nobody wants to be called "emo" anymore.

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2008 05:14 PM

If it ain't metal it is emo

Slayer, ftw.

BigDaddyCool 05-27-2008 05:26 PM

If the song deals with any emotion besides blind and absolute hate and anger, it is emo.

Slayer, ftw.

El Fangel 05-27-2008 05:27 PM

There are at least two bands whom I consider emo, that are not on that list.

BigDaddyCool 05-27-2008 05:30 PM

Oh, and country songs about drinking and driving trucks and ownership of dogs and wives/girlfriends running away are not emo.

BTW, if a country song is not about anything in afore mentioned list, it isn't a country song, or if it is sung by a woman, it isn't country and goes right back to being emo bullshit not worth listening too.

That would make 80% of music emo.

He's got a gimmick you see, Juan.

BDC has an ignorant loveable Redneck gimmick
FANGEL has an ignorant Canadian Gimmick.

Here is a serious question, and I am in no way setting anyone up for a punchline that I am going to deliver (though if another poster does I will not be held accountable) and I have asked this of my friends, but they have failed everytime...perhaps the music-saavy TPWW can answer it...here goes:

Can you direct me to some emo that does not suck copious amounts of testicle?

I am serious, I will give it a listen, link that shit up.

Danny Electric 05-27-2008 07:07 PM

the movielife are not emo

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2008 07:12 PM

AppleSeed cast is pretty amazing

check out low level owls.

thedamndest 05-27-2008 07:15 PM

Pick like 5-10 songs from different bands that are definitely "emo." Also, none of the songs had better be Fall Out Boy or Hawthorne Heights.

Danny Electric 05-27-2008 07:26 PM

Sunny Day Real Estate - Pillars
Further Seems Forever - Just Until Sundown
The Early November - I want To Hear You Sad

Danny Electric 05-27-2008 07:28 PM

Oh and I'd say

Brand New - Me vs Maradona vs Elvis

But everyone will probabaly disagree with me on all of these.

thedamndest 05-27-2008 07:31 PM

Okay, I will give them a fair shake and get back to you.

El Fangel 05-27-2008 07:48 PM

Protip: When the name of the song sounds as retarded as the name of the band, 93.45% of the time, Its emo.

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2008 07:58 PM

You should leave the music forum forever.

thedamndest 05-27-2008 07:58 PM

Sunny Day Real Estate - Pillars - This was good, it actually prompted me to listen to a second song by the band which I liked until they did that thing where they have the chorus and the guy (the guitar player who isn't lead singer) just kind of yells the chorus which I do not like. I could kind of make a comparison between them and the Smashing Pumpkins if the Pumpkins got took a bunch of downers maybe.

Further Seems Forever - Just Until Sundown This song wasn't on youtube, so I listened to "Light Up Ahead" instead. Great drumming, that's one thing that I seem to notice about this genre is that the drummers aren't afraid to earn their keep. I actually liked this song because the video was cool and the guy wasn't excessively whiny.

The Early November - I want To Hear You Sad - Catchy little riffs, but the guy's voice kind of had that whiny miscellaneous sound that sounds too much like every emo guy's voice. I think that is my main hurdle is when their voice get like that.

Brand New - Me vs Maradona vs Elvis - Good song, has a bit of Elliot Smith quality to it. Is this why people say emo is so sad? Because this sounded pretty sad, or does it get sadder?

All in all, I didn't hate it. Does anybody ever do a solo? Also, I would like an answer to the original question of "What is emo?".

Anybody feel free to recommend more non-testicle sucking emo.

El Fangel 05-27-2008 08:03 PM

TheD, Your asking almost the impossible.
I have not heard an emo song that made me not want to slit my own wrists by the end of it.

I am just trying to become more cultured. Does that mean I want to put on eyeliner, take off my girl pants and go balls deep into a black nailed chick while she is cutting her wrists and posting on her livejournal? No, but I at least want to hear the cream of the genre because all I've heard is what comes off the radio.

Yeah I would not consider Cursive "emo".

ron the dial 05-27-2008 09:01 PM

seriously? how could you not? their first two albums especially.

ron the dial 05-27-2008 09:02 PM

i guess my take on what emo is is more based on the mid/late 90s version than the current one.

mitchables 05-27-2008 09:55 PM

Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes and Domestica both unquestionably have early emo influences. There are parallels throughout both of those albums to earlier emo rock artists. So I'd say WeX is fairly on the money in that call. By the time they added Gretta Cohn though and started really expanding their horizons with Burst and Bloom, The Ugly Organ and beyond - as well as the secondary fact that Tim Kasher has grown as a songwriter and lyricist - their sound had transcended into something far more based in indie rock and even post-hardcore, to an extent.

Emo began with acts like Rites of Spring in the 80s and continued on in the early to mid 90s with Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker. The New Jersey scene really picked up steam with Thursday, Midtown, and bands like that who started to popularize the genre. It blew up these past few years with acts like My Chemical Romance and Fallout Boy who most "old school" emo fans dismiss as candy coated pop garbage.

Appleseed Cast is actually fairly cool. I have a record around here somewhere.

Anyway, Trips has it right. Most of the "It's not emo" lines ceom from people who don't want to be associated with pansies in black eyeliner.

Though it's funny that I've gotten hissyfits from mitch for saying Coheed and Camria weren't emo AND for saying they were. Sorry, that just never gets old. When it was all the rage to be emo, they were emo, and now that it's not, they can't be emo lolol.

Ugh, I know better than this but whatever. I find your definition of "hissyfit" hilarious, but you clearly have an amazingly clear, photographic-yet-photoshopped-to-the-shithouse memory of our conversation from
six years ago, so well done. Also, I would hardly say it was "all the rage" to be emo around the time we had the conversation, since it's really only been in the last three or four years (especially over here) that it's risen to any kind of mainstream prominence, so y'know. And I would've been what? Sixteen? Do you really, six years down the track, want to continue gloating about proving a sixteen year old child wrong and not being able to move on? Whatever floats your boat, buddy. You are an absolute dichotomy of maturity sometimes, KK.

mitchables 05-29-2008 10:19 PM

And moreover, beyond that, have you listened to any Coheed and Cambria lately? Their music on Good Apollo, Vol II is WORLDS away from anything they released on Second Stage Turbine Blade. So you know what? Screw you KK, it's got nothing to do with whether or not it's the rage to be emo. Soundwise, which is what we should be thinking of anyway, Coheed and Cambria have unquestionably come leaps and bounds away from the emo-tinged prog-rock sound of Second Stage and solidly into a far more metal-influenced, experimental prog feel. So bite me, really.

BUT OH NOES ITS NOT THE RAGE TO BE EMO, THATS WHY

Emo is that special feeling you get when you're holding hands with your best gal

road doggy dogg 06-04-2008 11:50 AM

a beautiful girl can make you dizzy
like you've been drinking jack and coke all morning
she can make you feel high

full of the single greatest commodity known to man --
promise.
promise of a better day.
promise of a greater hope.
promise of a new tomorrow.

this particular aura...
can be found in the gait of a beautiful girl.
in her smile
in her soul
the way she makes every rotten little thing about life
seem like it's gonna to be okay.
