Official Rock Band 2 thread

Rock Band 2 has been confirmed as in development for release in late 2008 by Wired. According to Wired, Harmonix is working on improving the instrument controllers but the current controllers will be forward compatible with Rock Band 2. Wired also stated that the game will likely include similar features announced for Guitar Hero World Tour, set also for release in late 2008.

Extreme Angle 05-29-2008 07:51 AM

just when it comes out in uk... ffs

Kane Knight 05-29-2008 09:11 AM

I hope to God the music is also forward compatible.

Disturbed316 05-29-2008 02:55 PM

That would be pretty awesome if it did, but I highly doubt it.

D Mac 06-01-2008 05:29 AM

List things this game needs.

1) Solo BASS tour
2) The ability to pick your cpu controlled bandmates.
3) The ability to create your own setlist on solo tour, solo quickplay, and band quickplay. Where you could play as many songs in a row you want. And pick the venues.

1) Hell Yes.
2) Yeah. Maybe even pick them from the same profile.
3) Agreed.

Let me add:
4) The ability to use characters on the same profile to do BWT, period. I don't want to do a second profile if I want to sing and play guitar. In fact, just give us the option to have a frontman with a riddem geetar. In fact, let us use the guitar or drum's headset to sing.
5) BWT online. This would up the online portions by like 9 million percent.
6) More CAR features. More detail i ncreation. I don't need SVR-level depth, but it'd be nice if we had a bit more detail in the creation process. Maybe even options for how our characters behave at different points (Such as overdrive).
7) Like I said, import music from RB. They wanted to make it like iTunes, well iTunes doesn't make you rebuy songs when you get a new iPod.
8) Recognise local DLC. Like, with the local showcases? I have tons of songs from the Boston area, but it only counts the three that were part of the original setlist. Minor deal, but still.

This is why Guitar Hero: Rock Band is such a bad idea.

Kalyx triaD 06-01-2008 12:43 PM

Let's not forget Konami's Rock Revolution.

Kane Knight 06-01-2008 04:45 PM

Wii's Wiifit board and those DDR mats won't help, either.

Boomer 06-01-2008 04:47 PM

Or all those Donkey Kong Drums I have...

HeartBreakMan2k 06-01-2008 05:09 PM

Or my Steel Batallion controls.

Funky Fly 06-02-2008 02:22 AM

I have in my house right now:

2 Donkey Konga bongo drums
2 PS2 Guitar Hero guitars
A 360 Special Edition Rock Band set

I intend to get a 3rd party 360 GH/RB guitar. And if the new Guitar Hero is awesome enough, it means more instruments still. Fuck.

Kane Knight 06-02-2008 09:15 AM

I have three plastic guitars. Technically, two. I lent the ex my SG for the PS2 so she could try Guitar Hero.

Kane Knight 06-26-2008 11:20 PM

You know what would be nice. Customising your instruments. Head, fretboard, pickups...

MTV, EA reunite on Rock Band 2
Publishers getting the band back together exclusively for the Xbox 360 in September; arrives on other platforms later in the year.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot

There's nothing quite so rock and roll as a reunion tour, a fact underlined by today's announcement of Rock Band 2, which will see MTV Games and Harmonix once again team up with Electronic Arts to put toy instruments and games on shelves across the nation.

However, unlike last year's series debut, Rock Band 2 will be very selective about which shelves it appears on. The game will debut on the Xbox 360 in September, and after a North American "exclusive launch window," it will find its way to additional unspecified platforms by year's end.

With this year's installment of Activision's rival rocker Guitar Hero going head-to-head with the full four-piece band concept, Rock Band 2 is making a few upgrades of its own. First and foremost among the details revealed today is that the sequel will be backward compatible with the original Rock Band's downloadable content, with no need to repurchase or redownload it to the system. That makes for a sizeable potential Rock Band 2 library right off the bat, given that the Rock Band music store currently has more than 200 songs available, which have garnered some 15 million paid downloads since the game launched in November.

Furthermore, Harmonix will be offering "new and improved" drum and guitar controllers with new features and designs, "all fully compatible with original Rock Band instruments." The game's tracklist will consist entirely of master recordings, and Harmonix is also promising new online modes with a greater emphasis on the Rock Band community's social aspects.

More details about Rock Band 2 will be made public at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit.

LOL PS3 only owners get fucked

What Would Kevin Do? 07-01-2008 02:52 AM

Not really? Yeah, the whole timed exclusive thing sucks, but a 3 month wait isn't the end of the world.

Disturbed316 07-01-2008 11:12 AM

Unless the world does actually end.

Kalyx triaD 07-01-2008 02:37 PM

The Atlas Project says so.

Blitz 07-01-2008 11:35 PM

So apparently X Play showed some of the Rock Band 2 song selection screen tonight. Besides seeing Rock Band 1 DLC on it, there were some new songs (the artists are all presumed, since only the song titles were shown):

* Dream Theater - “Panic Attack” (could also be Finger Eleven)
* System of a Down - “Chop Suey”
* Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Give It Away”
* Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
* Kim Wilde - “Kids in America”
* Motörhead - “Ace of Spades”
* Cheap Trick - “Hello There”
* Journey - “Any Way You Want It”
* The Who - “Pinball Wizard”

Shaggy 07-02-2008 12:23 AM

yea with them announcing the DLC will also be compatible with this version is a direct kick in the balls to Guitar Hero who announced their shit wasnt.

Kalyx triaD 07-02-2008 02:00 PM

God damn I'm gonna sing the Hell out of "Any Way You Want It".

I have to.

360 has a September release with a PS3 release later in the year. It's highly unlikely that it will be a 3 month wait. I'd say the beginning of November is the absolute LATEST, because they're going to want to get it out for the Holiday rush.

Note this isn't a timed exclusive, it's merely coming out sooner for one than the others. The difference may seem trivial, but if it were really a timed exclusive, they wouldn't be hyping it up for other systems, as that would be counterproductive.

So yeah, PS3 owners have to wait a little, but they're hardly screwed. Not that I really care, since I'll have mine at launch on the 360. But it's not going to be that big a deal.

I'm skeptical about some of these. Like Man in the Box has cussing and some questionable lyrics.

Boomer 07-08-2008 01:11 PM

Questionable song lyrics are pretty ridiculous anyway. For the Pixies Doolittle, they don't censor "Whores at the door, whore in my bed" by the censor "got a tattooed tit". I'm sure they could make it a T rating somehow.

Disturbed316 07-08-2008 03:02 PM

D Mac 07-08-2008 04:03 PM

From Gamespost:

Quote:

With hundreds of songs available to you from the get-go, the ability to create setlists for quick-play sessions is a crucial addition in Rock Band 2. In the last game, you could pick songs only one at a time; with the sequel, you'll be able to create setlists exactly how you see fit. It's perfect for the Rock Band fan who insists that every third song be a Rush tune, or that repeating Freezepop's "Sprode" 13 times in succession isn't just a good idea, it's a great idea.
SWEET

Kalyx triaD 07-08-2008 04:27 PM

I want the crowd to sing to DLC tracks as well. There's a section in "Scene... Arms Race" that begged for crowd interaction and there was none. Also the crowd track should be a few points louder, I could barely hear them in the multiple sections of "Welcome Home".

Kane Knight 07-09-2008 12:02 AM

Gamespot confirmed these songs, BTW.

"Ace of Spades" -- Motörhead
"Everlong" -- Foo Fighters
"Pinball Wizard" -- The Who
"Panic Attack" -- Dream Theater
"Any Way You Want It" -- Journey
"Chop Suey" -- System of a Down
"Kids in America" -- The Muffs
"Give It Away" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Hello There" -- Cheap Trick
"Pump It Up" -- Elvis Costello

I'm down with just about everything but Chop Suey...And that's mostly just because I don't want to try and sing it.

Nigger, buy a 360. You're getting you money's worth on the games in the XBox Live Marketplace alone. So many awesome games for like $10 or less in there. Also, you can play a lot of original XBox games like Fable and Jade Empire (both pretty kickass) thanks to backward compatibility. Also, Lost Odyssey = ratings. Actually, that is a lie because despite how awesome LO is, the version that they sent out for review was all unfinished and all the reviewers were like "meh" and/or :-\.

Gouge Away is also DLC, from the Pixies album "Doolittle."

Now, as I understand it, if a song was edited (Like for Radio, or the Wal-Mart release) they use the edited version, but don't if it wasn't edited (Like say, with whore in the Nirvana track vs in the C&C track...). Where it gets funky is I don't remember there being edited versions of any of the Pixies tracks, even on the radio.

The rumoured tracklists are so full of shit I want that once again, I find myself not caring about garbage like Blink being on it, or even minding Chop Suey (Again, like the song, hate the idea of PLAYING it). And there's actually a bunch of stuff I'm probably going to end up liking, though I don't know it.

The big question mark for me is if song authoring will end up making Guitar Hero the better sell. I hope they both do well, although there is no way I'm buying another drum kit. Luckily, my guitars are old enough to (presumably) work with all the games.

Song "authoring" will make it sell better, though people will then feel like retards when they learn how crippled it is.

Boomer 07-09-2008 11:18 PM

I imagine you're right. When I used Frets on Fire (the free PC Guitar Hero clone), I was really looking forward to authoring a song or two...but the tools were so awkward I didn't try more than five minutes.

U-Warrior 07-10-2008 01:50 AM

Frets on Fire doesn't have the most user-friendly interface, but there are still tons of really well made songs. It just takes time to learn it.

Does it include a limited sound bank? Because this is going to be one of the crippling elements to the music editor in GHWT. It won't be a user interface issue, especially since I'm sure the GHWT one will be pretty simple.

Kane Knight 07-11-2008 12:04 PM

Anyone seen the Ion drums?

U-Warrior 07-11-2008 03:14 PM

No, but I hear they can actually function as a real electric drum set.

Kane Knight 07-11-2008 05:22 PM

God yes.

Sweet mother of god, I hope the price isn't too ridiculous, cause I want that.

Kane Knight 07-11-2008 06:54 PM

Me too. I'd love to have a drum kit, and this would be a fair justification to get one, so...

KingofOldSchool 07-11-2008 08:33 PM

...damn.

U-Warrior 07-12-2008 01:35 AM

Along with the drums reveal, about seven or so more songs were revealed. All from that leaked list, so it appears to be the real deal. I am too lazy to post which songs but it is all over gamefaqs. Go look there if you are that interested.

U-Warrior 07-12-2008 01:36 AM

Or GoNintendo if you're skeptical of gamefaqs, which is completely understandable.

$300 ridiculous enough for you?

What's this? The first trailer?

I actually preordered those drums.

I feel kinda stupid for it, but fuck. How often do I get a game controller and a new drum set all at once?

Granted, you need a drum machine to turn it into a controller, but I can purchase one later. At least this is adjustable and shit. Anyone else here over 6' and tried fucking adjusting the Rock Band set? At their highest, I can't get my knees under them easily, so I have to hold my arms out like a fucking B-movie zombie.

Disturbed316 07-12-2008 12:36 PM

For some reason that trailer got me rather excited even though it showed absolutely nothing new.

Kalyx triaD 07-12-2008 04:57 PM

Love the funkadelic effects. Which brings to mind if I could view performances for the Hell of it.

KingofOldSchool 07-13-2008 10:42 AM

It would be nice if they did a program where you can send them your old RB drumset and they send you a coupon for like $30 off the new drumset or something of that nature.

It would probably get people like me who probably won't go out a buy the new drums since I've got the current one.

That'd be awesome. Though my current plan is to sell my drum kit to a friend. He's getting a 360 soon, now that he's gotten hooked on Rock Band, and so I plan on helping him save a few bucks at first. He only needs one guitar, because I'm the only person who he plays guitar with, his wife drums, and neither of them can sing. So they can get buy with a single guitar and drum set initially. No way will they buy a bundle anyway. Since my drum kit is ridiculously functional now (Two of the pads were unresponsive, then they seemed to work themselves out), I think it'll work.

Pegasus Crawford 07-14-2008 03:05 PM

July 14, 2008 - Last year, Rock Band was the only music game that enabled users to play as a full-fledged band. Things are different this year with Konami's Rock Revolution and, more dauntingly, Guitar Hero World Tour. Ultimately, no amount of features or new equipment is going to matter. The real winner will be whichever game has the best track list. Harmonix and MTV must be fully aware of this fact, because today, the two released the full 84-song set list. Judging by the impressive list, Konami and Activision have reason to worry. This is easily the greatest assemblage of music in a game to date.

The big jaw-to-the-floor announcement is that Guns N' Roses is set to debut a new song from the long-awaited album Chinese Democracy. It's not just that Rock Band 2 has GNR -- it has new GNR and effectively announces the imminent arrival of the band's oft-delayed album. Guns N' Roses' "Shackler's Revenge" is just the tip of the iceberg for a track list that features far more greats (Bob effin' Dylan!) than stinkers (Linkin effin' Park?!).

Joining GNR and Dylan are such surprises as Tenacious D, Pearl Jam, Beck, Talking Heads, and The Replacements. The list isn't so focused on spreading across decades as it is spanning genres. There's a lot more heavy metal this time around and the music from the '60s is better focused (and lacking the horror that is Green Tides and High Grass). Perhaps the only head scratcher is the inclusion of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," which most will recognize as an overused sports anthem.

Ah, but as great as this list may be, you love your old RB1 tracks and just don't want to give them up. Fear not. All downloadable content will work with Rock Band 2 and gamers can export tracks from Rock Band 1 to RB2. That's right -- from day one you can bring all RB1 tracks into RB2 to compliment your DLC as long as you own a PS3 or an Xbox 360 with a hard drive.

And there's more. Harmonix actually wanted to toss in 100 tracks total for the disk, but couldn't get them all in one time to ship for Xbox 360 by September. So this fall, MTV is releasing an additional 20 downloadable master tracks... for free. By year's end this will mean RB fans will have access to more than 500 songs.

That is the sound of Activision gulping.

Check out the full list of tracks. Note that all tracks on RB2 are master recordings. There are 75 tracks from famous artists, plus nine bonus tracks from various bands that feature members of Harmonix.
*edit* And... the confirmed set list!

D Mac 07-14-2008 03:34 PM

Yeah some good ones if that's true. Some I've never heard tho.

KingofOldSchool 07-14-2008 03:57 PM

*dances a jig*

D Mac 07-14-2008 04:00 PM

A jig doing a jig

#BROKEN Hasney 07-14-2008 04:17 PM

Yeah, it's true. Harmonix just announced the list at E3

Disturbed316 07-14-2008 04:26 PM

EYE OF THE TIIIIIIIIIGEEEEEEEEEEEEER!

Kalyx triaD 07-14-2008 04:33 PM

Jesus Christ. Rock Band is a console onto itself.

Kane Knight 07-14-2008 06:31 PM

I think I filled the cup.

Blitz 07-14-2008 07:08 PM

Fucking hell. September can't come soon enough.

KingofOldSchool 07-14-2008 07:40 PM

Holy shit with my Pearl Jam actually gets on Rock Band 2 excitement, I totally missed Eye of the Tiger.

OssMan 07-15-2008 03:53 AM

The Modest Mouse song they chose was Float On... dum

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:38 AM

Metallica Battery. I like it but you'd think they'd pick a song like Nothing Else Matters or The Unforgiven or Master of Puppets.

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:39 AM

Also where the fuck is Godsmack.

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:40 AM

And I hope the original Rock Band 1 disc songs are individual downloads. Because there are a few songs I will not be playing ever again like Ballroom Blitz or that stupid New Pornographers song.

I think it said you can transfer them from the disc to your hard drive, then use them in Rock Band 2.

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:49 AM

Hopefully you can delete some of them. Like Highway Star. Hate that shit.

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:52 AM

Yeah and I'm gonna stick with my regular drums. I hardly play with them anyways.

D Mac 07-15-2008 06:53 AM

I'm so glad I have a 120 GB Hard Drive for the 360.

Funky Fly 07-15-2008 05:09 PM

Fucking fuck yes!

Kane Knight 07-15-2008 05:14 PM

Hey Funky. Got Gold yet?

Funky Fly 07-15-2008 05:15 PM

No. I have the cash, but not the time to play. :'(

Blitz 07-15-2008 05:46 PM

So seeing as how this game is gonna need a lot of hard drive space probably, I'm thinking of upsizing my 20gig. But is there even a way to transfer stuff from my old hard drive to a new one?
