NBA 2008 Off Season Thread

Post rumors, talk about trades, what you want your teams to get in the draft, and all that good stuff.

Here's hoping to a healthy recovery for Bynum.

Offseason, hmmm, Celtics can get their rings and banner made up for opening day. First move of the offseason is I'll go to the parade tomorrow. I just think they need a back up point guard and a replacement for PJ Brown, since he's probably retiring, and they should be good to go. Honestly think that if nothing goes wrong, knock on wood, they're going back to the finals.

SammyG 06-18-2008 03:52 PM

Phil Jackson: "We're going to have to make some moves and get some players that are aggressive if we want to get back here next June"

Ship Vlade and Luke out. Mihm too. Maybe L.O, if we can find equal value.

KingofOldSchool 06-18-2008 04:04 PM

Kobe will demand a trade and there will be a week of "KOBE TO CHICAGO FOR THE #1 PICK AND BEN GORDON?!?!" rumors. And then right before the draft Kobe will be all like "I love L.A. and I want to finish my career here."

Juan 06-18-2008 04:06 PM

I can guarantee you that wont happen.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-18-2008 10:44 PM

Celtics need to resign Posey and maybe pick up a "true" point guard to back up Rondo. I like House off the bench but hes more of a scorer than a point guard, so yeah. Also it would be cool if they could pick up a serviceable big man to back up Perk, someone who bang in the post and play tough D. C's where pretty lucky to avoid any major injuries all year so their lack of depth at certain positions never really showed, I would like to see them improve on that and not have to depend on last season veteran signings such like they did this year (not really complaining here since it worked, but just something that they could improve on for next year)

I guess people think Gabe Pruitt has a shot at cracking the line up next year, we'll see. I think he only played in a hand full of games this past season, spending most of the year in the D-League.

Drafts comin up in a couple of weeks...who you guys got? I really want the Celts to pick up Bill Walker from K-State with the last pick. A lot of mocks got them taking some foreign dude who isn't expected to play in the NBA for a few years but whatever - don't have to look forward to draft for once haha, can't complain about that

Juan 06-18-2008 11:31 PM

Quote:

When the Miami Heat let James Posey slip away most people just shrugged their shoulders and kept going about their business. No big deal, right? He was a minor participant for the Heat during their championship run. Then again, his new team is where his old team was, on the verge of winning a championship.

I'm not suggesting that Posey is the sole reason the Celtics are close to adding yet another banner to the rafters of the Garden, but he is the kind of player every championship team needs - the kind the Lakers are lacking at present. Posey is the Jerome Kersey, the Mario Elie, the Tayshaun Prince - the guy who makes the big stop, makes the extra hustle play, and the guy who can also hit a big shot when you need one to help his team get over the hump.

It's interesting, then, that printed reports today have Posey on the Lakers' summer free agency list. Posey took a minimal deal from the Celtics, one of the advantages of which was opt-out language, so that he could show his value and hopefully earn a bigger deal for next season. One option will, of course, be for the Celtics to retain him. It's hard to imagine that they wouldn't if they win a title this week, but if they don't Posey could become the key player for the Lakers next season . . .and possibly help produce a championship for them. Maybe Posey will actually become the next Robert Horry, going from team to team bringing championships in his wake despite most of his work being invisible in the box score. If he wins a title this year in Boston and next year in LA, don't be surprised to see his name come up a lot more often.

Juan 06-18-2008 11:33 PM

I doubt the Celts would let him go now. TBH though I dunno where their salary cap stands.

Juan 06-18-2008 11:37 PM

Phil wants stronger players:

Quote:

apparently, did Jackson, who took the unusual step of threatening roster moves even before the cheering stopped.

"We have to get some players if we're going to come back and repeat, to have that kind of aggressiveness that we need," he said.

So when they return next fall, some of the Lakers might be new.

After this awful farewell, it is hoped that some of them will also be improved.

SammyG 06-19-2008 12:40 AM

Odom might be gone, I'm thinking. Artest to LA would be tremendous.

Also, can this thread please be stickied, mods? Thanks.

MCEazy 06-19-2008 01:09 AM

as much as i hate artest he would be a good fit in LA, we need better D fuk.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-19-2008 01:11 AM

Artest is way too much of a mental case I think. I mean I know Phil Jackson did a pretty good job with Rodman but Rodman was a different kind of mental case. I seriously think Artest has some form of mental retardation or something, Rodman was/is just weird as fuck.

SammyG 06-19-2008 01:30 AM

Artest is a perfect three for us though. He is a great defender, and he can be aggressive and shoot. Vlad-Rad will not be a Laker next year, hopefully. Worst starter ever in the Finals, probably.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-19-2008 01:40 AM

Yeah while discuss the upcoming Finals series with my friends before it all started none of us could think of who the 3 man was for the Lakers yet we all follow basketball pretty closely lol

Artest would be a great fit with his skill set, but still, have you ever heard the dude talk or any of his interviews or anything? He is straight up retarded, like I feel bad calling him that because I really think he has some sort of mental handicaps or something.

Remember when he told a reporter he didn't fell like playing and was thinking about retiring so he could work on his rap album?

Ron Artest does a radio show out here for a Sacramento radio show and he really isn't that bad. He's pretty funny.

From what I've heard though, he's not looking to opt out.

VonErichLives 06-19-2008 04:06 PM

yeah, I think since the "Brawl" he's been pretty good.

There is talk the Celtics might go for him and that Danny Ainge tried to get him 2yrs ago...

Gee, one of the best defensive players in the league on the best defensive team in the league...

-The Indiana Pacers are trying to dangle the #11 pick in hopes of being able to package it with one of their ugly contracts (preferably Jermaine O’Neal). There is talk out of O’Neal’s camp that he anticipates being trade to Cleveland at some point this summer, possibly in a deal involving expiring contracts such as Wally Szczerbiak and Eric Snow.

The Pacers don’t want to give O’Neal away for nothing, but the temptation of shedding his 23 million dollar contract from their cap figure (giving them substantial cap space to work with in July of 2009) may be too great to pass up. On Cleveland’s end, it makes sense for their ownership to spend the money it will take to try and appease LeBron James and show them they are making the efforts to put together a championship caliber team. We’ve heard rumblings about this Cleveland/Indiana trade from a number of well-informed sources, so there appears to be at least some truth to it.
If Bird even THINKS about trading the 11th pick without moving up in the process, I will find Bird and shove my boot up his ass.

I wish I had been watching that live as it happened. It's one of the highlights of my life. The should have a brawl between the team and the fans every year. I will always remember that Piston fan going up to Jermaine O'Neal and then bam a right by JO.

Bird is horrible. I wish Boston would take him back. No big name is gunna come play in INdiana especially if Maniac Larry thinks Tinsley will be the starting pg. God, just take Westbrook or Augustine. This is horrible.

thats a lot of money free'd up around the time James will be a free agent?

Dunno, this suck like crap for a year, get a good pick and free up a ton of cap space isn't a horrible plan...

Posey has 2 rings now, I don't see a home town discount, but I could see one of the big 3 taking a little pay cut to free up money to keep him.

Like RP said, there is no way in hell a big name like Lebron would be going to Indiana, at least this Indiana ball club.

Seriously, if anything the Pacers should package the 11th pick and Tinsley and/or JO to a team in the top ten for an expiring contract and their first round pick.

WESTBROOK GOD DAMMIT

Remember that last guy we drafted from UCLA in the first round?

Yeah I think he turned out okay for our team.

RP 06-20-2008 12:53 AM

Westbrook will be amazing. I think Westbrook will be one of the best players out of this draft.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-20-2008 01:14 AM

Was just looking at a mock draft...the first 7 picks could potentially all be freshman

I'd like to see the Jazz get a big man with defensive presence in the draft.

RP 06-20-2008 12:23 PM

The Pacers will find a way to screw this up. I just know it. I can feel it in my bones. We're gunna take some slow foreign guy and send him over seas for a few years and never here from him again. Will probably trade O'Neil for another underachieving player with a massive contract also.

All i ask is for Russell Westbrook. Thats it. Please.

Gertner 06-20-2008 12:46 PM

hopefully roy hibbert will fall to us

mrslackalack 06-20-2008 01:59 PM

Lakers need to make a trade for a solid SF like Melo, Artest, Prince, Richard Jefferson and Iggy. Id throw at them Odom, Rad, and a 2009 1st rd pick.

RP 06-20-2008 02:10 PM

Who would want to give up any of those players for a SF/PF that cant shoot, an unathletic SF who sometimes can shoot and the 2nd to last pick in the draft? There was a reason why Bynum needed to be included in any deal concerning Odom. Its because Odom isnt nearly as good once someone like say...KG backs off him and just lets him shoot the ball.

SammyG 06-20-2008 04:19 PM

Hmmm... interesting. Rumors of Richard Jefferson to the Lakers for Odom and fillers. Assuming the fillers are Mihm, Vlad, Luke maybe.

IC Champion 06-20-2008 04:27 PM

Damn it, I wanted Toronto to go after RJ, we need a big physical swingman like him.

IC Champion 06-20-2008 04:28 PM

I really hope we move TJ Ford, he's an underachiever.

SammyG 06-20-2008 04:33 PM

Well, it's just a rumor. Hell, KG to LA were rumors too, last year. But the fact that Mitch actually made a huge move in the middle of the year shows me that we might make another one this offseason.

IC Champion 06-20-2008 04:52 PM

Raptors buy out Garbojosa's contract. Fuck him anyways.

Coach Phil Jackson and General Manager Mitch Kupchak anticipate a different lineup with many of the same players.
By Jonathan Abrams
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

June 21, 2008

New season, new Lakers?

The Lakers could feature a completely different makeup next season, Coach Phil Jackson said today.

"If and when [Andrew Bynum] is back, which we anticipate, it will be a different team entirely," Jackson said.

The shifting probably will involve players sliding into new roles, rather than a full-out hunt in the free-agent market this summer.

It will include juggling a loaded frontcourt and Lamar Odom possibly moving from power forward to small forward.

"It's a real issue," Jackson said. "We think we can do it. We think people will have to sacrifice."

General Manager Mitch Kupchak said the team would be creative in its rotation next year, and one option was for Odom to play guard and Kobe Bryant to move up to small forward.

"It could be the longest and biggest frontcourt in the NBA in many, many years," Kupchak said.

"It is a team that would be very talented, very long and versatile, and I think training camp would be an important time to test out what [Jackson] has done during the summer."

Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, Kupchak and Jackson will sit down in the next couple of days to assess the team's future.

As for the Lakers losing in the NBA Finals to Boston in six games, Jackson said:

"We were a Cinderella team, and we just couldn't put the slipper on," before adding: "I just think we weren't ready to assume that role."

As for Bryant and Pau Gasol stretching their bodies to play in the Beijing Olympics this summer, Jackson admitted some concerns, but, "They're so gung-ho about it that I just have to allow them my blessing to play."

Meanwhile, Kupchak's midseason trade for Gasol, in what many considered a heist, is largely credited with catapulting the Lakers into the Finals.

Kupchak said today he expects to retain free agents Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf, but otherwise may show a faint interest in the free-agent market.

Kupchak confirmed that the team's ownership would meet shortly to discuss possible off-season moves.

"We're well over the cap; we're well over the luxury-cap threshold," he said. "I've looked at the free-agent list. We've ranked them ... but the bottom line is, it's not a very strong unrestricted group of free agents."

Kupchak said Bryant appeared "chipper," when the pair met Thursday.

"It was certainly different than last season's exit meeting," Kupchak said.

Today was the last day of exit interviews for the Lakers at their El Segundo training facility.

Here are some comments from players as they left the Lakers' complex:

Derek Fisher

The point guard rejoined the Lakers this season, falling just short of earning his fourth championship with the team.

He said he was dealing with mixed emotions.

"[I'm] disappointed we couldn't get it done, couldn't get it figured out," Fisher said. "But at the same time, proud of our accomplishment and proud to be a member of this team.

"Just losing in the Finals is not a good feeling."

Fisher said he doesn't anticipate major personnel changes with the team this summer and hopes that he is right.

For any team, he said, there has to be an amount of mutual responsibility and accountability. "I think our group was willing to do that this year," he said.

Andrew Bynum

The young center got the Lakers started on their path to the NBA Finals before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in January.

Bynum had hoped to return to action during the playoffs, but setbacks caused him to eventually undergo surgery instead.

Now, the Lakers can dream of next season when Bynum will finally join Gasol in their long-anticipated frontcourt tandem.

Bynum said he would resume training in two to three weeks and intended to work on his lateral quickness over the summer to handle plays such as the high-pick-and-rolls the Celtics tossed out at the Lakers.

Bynum also is due a contract extension, but the Lakers probably will wait to see how his leg reacts to workouts this summer before approaching the issue.

"That's for my agent to handle," he said. "We'll see what happens."

Lamar Odom

The season had hardly ended before rumblings of Odom being traded for a small forward better suited for the triangle offense started popping up.

"It's crazy," Odom said after his exit interview today. "As soon as I walked into our meeting, Mitch [Kupchak] told me sorry about something that came up in the paper. It's been going on ever since I came here."

But he also was adamant about where he wants to be.

"This is where I want to end my career," he said. "As a Laker."

Odom said he would work on his lateral quickness this summer in anticipation of shifting from power forward to small forward with the return of Bynum.

Still, the devastating Game 6 loss in Boston will sting for a while.

"I'm staying away from NBA TV right now," he said. "I can't stomach it right now. It's something that's going to stick with us for a minute."

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-22-2008 01:03 AM

I dunno I think Odom might be a bit slow to guard some SF, lol@ him playing guard though. Maybe on offense I guess, but he definitely could not check the majority of 2 guards in the NBA on D.

IC Champion 06-22-2008 10:59 PM

Maybe they'll play some sort of zone D. Not alot of SG are going to be able to stop Odom on Offence, he can take them in the post, or shoot over them. It's like JS said, he wont have the quickness to guard most 2s in the NBA. But who knows.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-23-2008 12:08 AM

Saw a mock with the Celtics taking this guy....

Nathan Jawai from Australia. Hmmm, would be a project but he looks like he could be an absolute beast in the post. 6'10" 275 LBs, could develop into a nice back up center.

I've also seen him going a lot higher than the Celtics too though, so we'll see. It seems like everyone is dead set on the Celtics taking a big man, which makes the most sense, but who knows. I got a feeling Scalabrine is gonna get dumped somehow though :(

SammyG 06-23-2008 01:28 AM

Serious trade talks between Lakers and Bobcats, maybe dealing Odom for Gerald Wallace.

Juan 06-23-2008 03:35 AM

McLegend 06-23-2008 07:32 PM

Shaq is better then Kareem.

If you were playing a pickup game with those, and you wanted to stay on the court the whole night you guys would honestly pick Kareem over Shaq? Both in there primes.

There ain't no way in hell Kareem could handle Shaq.

MCEazy 06-23-2008 08:26 PM

wait so then ur saying a guy with more MVP's, championships, All-NBA defensive team's, points, rebounds, freethrow %, better leadership and more blocks is inferior to shaq? You can't go and say that Kareem couldn't handle shaq, they've played in two different era's and have never faced each other, nor will they ever. Kareem's widely considered one of the best ever up there w/ Jordan, Bird and Magic, when's the last time u've heard that about shaq?

McLegend 06-23-2008 08:32 PM

Shaq is the most dominating Center since Wilt Chamberlain. They changed the rules for both players so people could actually play against them. No one did that for Karrem.

Karrem wasn't even a good defensive player. C'mon

shaq wasn't that great of a defender ether, he's never been a 1st league defender (only 3 second team) whereas as Kareem's been a 1st league defender 11 times and averaged more blocks per game. No doubt Shaq was more dominating in the paint then Kareem or basically almost anybody ever to play (except for Wilt) but when u compare the 2 overall (offence, defence, success and leadership), Kareem is still miles ahead.

McLegend 06-23-2008 08:50 PM

No he isn't. Kareem was a pussy. Huge ninny.

Mosses Malone and Bill Walton own him. No one owns Shaq.

MCEazy 06-23-2008 10:42 PM

shaq couldn't do without kobe ether, or dwayne wade for that matter :-\

Juan 06-24-2008 12:41 AM

Shaq better than Kareem?!? You gotta be fuckin kidding me.

Crimson 06-24-2008 01:00 AM

So is it hands down Bulls pick up Rose?

Juan 06-24-2008 01:50 AM

KingofOldSchool 06-24-2008 10:55 AM

There is a rumor (although the trade is supposedly off, but that never means anything) of the Pacers trading Jermaine O'Neal to the Raptors for Rasho Nestrovic (he's got a hefty expiring contract), T.J. Ford, and the 17th pick in the draft.

That would be LOVELY for the Pacers, they could use that 17th pick to get either DeAndre Jordan or Darrell Arthur.

RP 06-24-2008 11:04 AM

That would be a nice deal. I dont think they'd pick Jordan or Arthur. Probably Kostas Kofus or whatever the fuck his name is.

He might be off the board by the 17th pick, at least from all of the mocks I've seen. I'd rather get a center than another forward, imo. They need bigger bodies in the paint,

RP 06-24-2008 11:14 AM

I hope that trade happens. If Fords head doesnt fall off with all those neck injuries, i think he is gunna be a fantastic PG. Then i'd like to see Indiana package those 2 picks to get deep in the top 10 maybe. Bayless seems to be dropping fast. Some people have him at #7. I think he'd be a pretty good 2 guard despite his size. I liken him to AI.

RP 06-24-2008 11:22 AM

I think we need to draft Augustine if Westbrook isnt there. Augustine ( though i question whether he's a big game performer ) makes the most sense to draft for Indiana right now. Unless they get T. J Ford and a new neck.

RP 06-24-2008 11:25 AM

If the Pacers get another pick in the 12-19 range, the future is bright. Unless they just totally fuck it up. Theres alot of talent in this draft. Adding two players in the top 20 will be huge.

You watch what you call him. Greek PHENOM.

RP 06-24-2008 06:43 PM

I think this deal with the Raptors might end up happening.

I was reading Bill Simmons and Chris Ford doing a mock draft. They took turns making every other pick. Somehow they had Bayless coming to us. I'd shit my pants if that happend. Just like i shit my pants when Granger fell to us.

RP 06-24-2008 06:52 PM

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SHAQ PWNAMENTS

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3459208

Somewhere Kobe is laughing histerically because he never said one thing to Shaq to make Shaq go and do that rap and in turn, fuck himself. ROFL love Kobe a little more now.

RP 06-24-2008 07:11 PM

For one day only, i love Larry Bird

http://www.wthr.com/global/story.asp?s=8547059

"I'm not really worried about our point guard situation because I know there's some things out there we can do to get a good point guard - maybe two of them. We got one for sale," Bird said. LOLz

I really like how honest with the public Larry is being about the team. And he's not hiding what the front office is trying to accomplish. I also like the fact that the Pacers openly acknowledge they look to shop O'Neal and Jermaine is good with that on a professional business type level. It really seems O'neal could come back if we didnt trade him and not take it personally. Ofcourse, 44 million dollars over 2 years tends to keep you pretty level headed.

If the Heat seriously dont take Beasley, this whole draft could change. Beasley seems real laid back and seems like the class clown type. He doesnt seem like he takes anything serious. I can see how that might scare some people. You wonder if when its time for him to be a leader ( which he has the talent to match ) will he actually step up, or be immature and just tell jokes. I can see why that scared people, but I think the Heat are insane if they dont take him.

RP 06-25-2008 12:37 PM

I dont want the Pacers to take Augustine, but its the best pick and Augustine might just be a fantastic PG when its all said and done. He's got the tools and the leadership. Its just not a fancy pick to me i guess. Westbrook is a fancy pick. Gordon or Bayless too.

I'll tell you what i want to see. I want the Pacers to show some real balls and draft Joe Alexander if he's available.

RP 06-25-2008 03:46 PM

Pacers better not take no fucking Roy Hibbert bullshit. I swear to god Larry.

SammyG 06-25-2008 03:48 PM

lol, why does it matter anyway. You have no shot at coming out of the East anyway.

Looks like the deal is done depending on physicals. This is huge. For one, we might get by with TJ ford as our point. 2) Now if someone like Anthony Randolph drops, we dont have to pass on him. We can draft him and see his potential develope ( hopefully into a PF ). 3) We can do any number of things at 17. We can take Hibbert ot Koufus and have a solid big man who can probably come in and start, or if we dont think TJ Ford is a sure thing as the starter ( why wouldnt we ? ) we could maybe take Mario Chalmers, or Augustine might still be there, who knows.

Let's trade him to the Cincinnati Bengals, he'd fit in with them.

RP 06-25-2008 08:52 PM

I think we need to roll with Ford and snag whatever really good player drops at 11. Everything i've ever seen from Ford was great. I mean, his neck is probably fine. He averaged 12pnts 6 assists and 1 steal in 23 minute per game last year. He could probably put up all star numbers with Granger and Dunleavy and maybe EG or Bayless is one of them drops. I dunno, but Ford in my mind is an all star caliber PG when healthy. How we roped the Raptors into this deal is beyond me, but i hope Chris Wallace is calling and asking about Tinsley.

We have a shot at getting a solid center. Hibbert i just dont know about. Guy seemed to dissapear last year. He would be fantastic defensivley. Seems like a smart good charachter guy. Maybe he can develope some offensive game i dunno. I'm not sure about HIbbert or Koufus. Darrell Aurthur might be there, but he's really skinny. That kinda worries me. He's shaped more like a SF and i think we need a PF or C at 17.

If Aurthur can fill out into his frame and put some pounds on, we should take him. He could be a star. I like Javale Mcgee too, but Birds already said he wants to draft players that can help right away. I dont know if either of them can do that.

As for pick #11. Theres several players that might drop for whatever reasoning. Bayless, Gorden, Randolph ( most likely ). We need to jump on Randolph if he's there. We cant get Bender'ed twice can we?
