Well, I've seen back bearhugs where they're basically spooning by the arm check. Then when they're "hulking" out of it it's pretty... Well, gay.

I'd say that wins out.

I think a lot of the problem is as time's progressed people have obviously wised up to the game so now guys don't work as stiff as they used to leaving a lot of the holds that require some rough housing to look good being nothing but unimpressive and laughable. Bear hug being a main offender but it's not alone. The abdomnale strecth was one of the most feared holds in wrestling when Inoki used and to look at it today and it's a move you can hit in the shine and no one will complain. Ludicris. Figure Four. Used to a finish used by houndreds. Now? Everyone uses it no one wins with it. The list goes on.

I think Ric Flair won a few matches with the figure four, but I'm not sure. I'd have to check.

Sleeper holds used to be a lot more effective too, but they really aren't all that gay.

Back in the day, I remember Mario Milano winning EVERY match with the Abdominal Stretch, Mark Lewin winning with the Sleeper Hold, Jack Briscoe with the Figure Four.

The difference is, I think, twofold.

(1) Back then, it was new (relatively) and we weren't so smarkish.
(2) The Old School wrestlers were a different breed - maybe some were tougher and hence weren't afraid to give and take a bit more pain to get over with the crowd.

It was universally acknowledged that attacking the buttocks was stupid.

What about the Inverted Atomic Drop? Not sure if I'd call it gay or not...

Not so much about being over as it was being beleivable. They had to sell the fact they were real. Even back then people knew you would have to be superman to go through this and survive. SO they had to go above and beyond to make it look legit. Plus when everyone bought it the reality of the sleeper/stectch/figure four/etc existed. These things hurt if done right. Now that the cat is out of the bag it's more about giving the poeple a good show/circus than simulating a wrestling match.

Which is why I watch more old school/puro/Bryan Danieslon than anything else. I'd rather it be like it was back in the day.

Does the figure-four actually hurt? I've heard both yes and no - have never actually had it applied to me, but can see if applied properly that it COULD twist the knee.

The ankle is in the most danger imo. And yes, you can make it hurt with ease. Even on accident.

Yes it really hurts, especially on the top of the shin/knee area of the lower leg. You could definitely break somebody's leg if you did it right.

Also, the reversal where the guy in the Figure 4 turns the other guy over onto his stomach; that actually forces the guy's heel directly into your nuts. So those looks of pain are totally legit.

I've always thought that any move involving lifting an opponent over your head perpendicularly (for, say, a gorilla press) was very gay... you basically have to grab the opponent's crotch with your right hand, and do it carefully. How is that not gay?
