True Blood

I DVRed an episode of True Blood on HBO. I'm not sure if it's the first one, because I thought it was an upcoming series, not a current one. Looks interesting so far, but I was wondering if it's been on for a while (more than a week), and I'm curious as to what others think.

The espidoe is called "Strange Love."

PapaGeorgio 09-13-2008 02:06 PM

Mad crazy, I was going through list of stuff I DVRed, saw True Blood. Decided to watch it, see the name of the episode and title and wondering if it is the pilot or what. But now as it is starting up it said "AND NOW THE PREMIER OF THE HBO ORIGINAL SERIES...TRUE BLOOD" So yeah, it's the start of it.

DS 09-13-2008 02:07 PM

The first episode was Sunday. I wanted to like it but I found it quite boring. I'll try and watch the second episode to see if it gets any better for me but I have little hope.

Kane Knight 09-13-2008 02:38 PM

I thought it was pretty good myself. I'm not completely sold on it or anything, but I liked the pilot enough to keep watching.

PapaGeorgio 09-13-2008 02:58 PM

Yeah, that's kind of how i feel. Some potential, will give it few more episodes to see where it goes.

Kane Knight 09-14-2008 01:24 PM

I loved the presence of Bill Maher on TV, interviewing the Vampire Rights chick. I like the idea of synthetic blood allowing vamps the option of living in society. I like the concept of "V-Juice" junkies and the idea of prejudice based on mere suspicion.

There are a lot of concepts they used that helped sell me, so if the plot good in upcoming episodes, I may love this series. Of course, if the plot sucks, the basic concepts are meaningless.

Dark-Slicer Diago 10-20-2008 09:13 PM

I'm beginning to like this show, it's not only well written(IMO at least) but episode 6 Anna Paquin got nude then in episode 7 Lizzy Caplan(who was in Freeks and Geeks, the short season 2 of Tru Calling and a couple episodes of Smallville) got nude in episode 7. I just wonder how much better this show can get as it's not the nudity that makes so good.

Kane Knight 10-20-2008 10:16 PM

I need to get some of the books this is based off of.

ct2k 10-22-2008 06:10 AM

So whats this show actually about?

Downunder 10-22-2008 08:35 AM

From IMDB:

The series follows Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid living in Louisiana who can read people's minds, and how her life is turned upside down when the Vampire Bill, walks into her place of employment two years after vampires 'came out of the coffin' on national television

It's actually pretty good, I wasn't sure after watching the pilot but after 4 episodes I'm really getting into to it.

Cooler Tom Schuler 10-26-2008 04:33 AM

Deborah has been watching this show constantly, it's alright, but I find all the pointless sex irritating. So much of it is not at all story driven. It's just there.

Vampire story. Sookie Stackhouse is a mind reader who works at a bar in Bon Temps. She is attracted to the Vampire William Compton because, aside from his other traits, she cannot read his mind. Or that of any vamp, evidently.

Problem is, people start turning up dead, including one of Sookie's coworkers. Bill is naturally a suspect, and Sookie sets out to find out the truth. Bill insists that the murders weren't even done by a Vampire, but naturally, nobody's going to believe him.

There are a lot of interesting elements to the series (both the books and the TV show) as they deal with the societal issues of any minority. Especially when said minority has a clear dangerous streak. There is a synthetic blood that vamps can drink, but not everyone wants to "integrate." There are vampire bars, and a subculture of people who frequent them. V-Juice, a street name for vampire blood, has all sorts of properties, including healing powers and a sex enhancer that makes Viagra look like a placebo.

This is the ghood kind of Sci-Fi/Fantasy, where the fantastic elements aren't really as important as the story and the characters. CTS is right about gratuitous sex, though, but it's kind of a genre staple.

RP 10-27-2008 11:56 AM

I watched the first 3 episodes and couldnt get into it. Got tired of the black chick ( Hope she's the co worker who turned up dead ). I cant tell you if it was just slow or if it just wasnt my sort of thing. I dont really know. I wanted to like it, but i just didnt. Anna Paquin looks hot though. Gotta catch the episode where she showed her hoo haa's

Yah thats exactly what annoyed me. It was like story, story, story, pause ,Hey heres some sex, story story story

RP 10-27-2008 11:58 AM

And Bill looks like Paul Rudd. That annoyed me a bit.

Kane Knight 10-31-2008 07:46 PM

Reading the first novel. This series is VERY similar to the books from what I've seen so far. The plot is very similar, and a lot of the dailogue is close or verbatim.

I'm really digging it, though.

Downunder 11-03-2008 10:05 PM

I just watched episode 7, the more I watch this the more I like it. it's fairly upfront with its treatment of issues like racism (against Vampires) and drug use/addiction, the Vampire blood (V-Juice). There is no clear cut heros and villians, it's good.

I hope it goes for more than one season.

Dark-Slicer Diago 11-06-2008 07:09 PM

It will go on more than 1 season, it's been renewed for season 2 for about 2 months now.

Mr. Nerfect 02-13-2009 12:23 PM

True Blood

Just watched that vampire show starring Anna Paquin. Just saw the first episode, and I must say, I thought it was really good. Had a great sense of humour to it, and you have to love the way it inserts Paquin in a bikini and a few sex scenes here and there.

A few of the plot developments seem a little bizarre, and unlike much I have seen in a series before. The whole subplot with her brother seems so abitrary, but I'm sure it will have some sort of importance.

I can't help be reminded of supernatural shows such as Buffy, and the like, but hopefully it really furthers it own personality. You in the US have probably gotten a chance to see how it really develops. Good show?

Just read it got picked up for a second season. I'm really hopeful about this turning into one of my favourites. I like it so much better than Mad Men so far.

jaycool2k 02-16-2009 10:56 AM

I have seen the whole first season, really enjoyed it. Looking forward to see how it carries over, as it stops on a nice cliffhanger.

'Jase Everett - Bad things' is a top song also. :)

Shaggy 02-19-2009 02:11 AM

Ive only seen one episode but I enjoyed it...first two minutes of the episode had a vampire getting stabbed and blood flying everywhere...

All I know is that my girlfriend is a really huge fan of the show and gets super pissed when she misses an episode.

Mr. Nerfect 02-21-2009 03:34 AM

Girls generally dig shit about vampires, which has made me cynical towards vampire shit, but I'm liking this show. The second episode wasn't nearly as great as the first, in my opinion, because the relationship between the vampire and the girl is a bit cliche, but it left a good cliffhanger.

And the intro is fucking awesome, as jaycool2k said. I hope the show keeps the attitude that song and intro put out, and create a sort of subtly sinister and clever vampire show. We'll see how it goes, though.

The sex scenes in this show are awesome, by the way.

Cannot wait for this.

You're gonna be PIIIIIIIIIIISSED by this season, then.

Fignuts 05-02-2009 12:13 AM

Yeah, I know he's more powerful than bill, but I can dream.

Shaggy 05-02-2009 12:16 AM

My fiance loves this damn show. Ive only seen one episode of it but she says its the best show in the world.

I'm going to watch season 1 again to get "'in the mood".

One of the better shows on TV last year.

I was thinking more "The first season ends with the beginning of the second book, so it looks like they're going to follow the plot."

I'm not going to say anything specific, but...

I really hope they do follow the book. Not because I like Erik or want to piss you off, but because Erik is a solid foil in the book, and I love the character development in it. I mean, if you hated him before, you will likely still hate him, but I doubt you'll be bothered by the seaason.

Fignuts 05-02-2009 12:21 AM

Seriously, this is why I have trouble getting into shows on regular channels. Because the quality of HBO shows is so high, that everything else pales in comparison.

Cathouse.

Yummy.

St. Jimmy 05-02-2009 08:38 AM

In a show with vampires I find it sad the the only teeth that frighten me are those of Anna Paquins.

Yeah. rewatching The Wire right now. Forgot how awesome this shit is.

RBM 05-03-2009 02:04 AM

I'm guessing we won't be graced by Lizzy Caplan's naked body anymore. She's on some Starz show now.

Gonzo 05-04-2009 01:22 AM

This show, in comparison to other shows on HBO, sucks.

Fignuts 05-04-2009 05:15 PM

I say thee nay.

Gonzo 05-04-2009 08:27 PM

I'll explain why I think so.

I think that the story moved along very quickly, which didn't allow for character development people are used to seeing from HBO shows. There was too much fluff in the stories. They seemed to throw random shit in there aside from vampires, like Sam turning into a dog, that woman that caused the black girl to crash her car etc.

Its been quite a while since I've seen the show (I watched all the episodes) so I'm sure I could provide more reasons why I didn't like it as much, but I can't be bothered to go back and provide them.

I think it just could have been better. Disappointed with it ultimately. I guess it doesn't suck, it just isn't as good as it could be.

Anyone else a fan of this show

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/u.../trueblood.jpg

Bought the dvd set of season 1 and absolutely love this show

100 times better then that shitty Twilight crap

the acting is a little sub par at times but it really hooks ya in

Jon Kano 08-05-2009 11:49 PM

Seriously looks fucking shit, have no interest in even giving this a shot.

They got 'Moonlight' too, and then 'Medium', 'Fringe', 'Ghost Whisperer' - all these fucking paranormal/sci-fi shit shows trying to replace Buffy and X-files do my fuckin nut in.

Seth82 08-05-2009 11:51 PM

Moonlight was a good show too the others are crap tho

Jon Kano 08-05-2009 11:54 PM

Eeh, I dunno man, I would say Fringe was the best of the lot. Just not my cuppa teaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

Seth82 08-05-2009 11:55 PM

Got the complete set of Moonlight also as it only aired 1 season and now the reruns air on fridays on Sy-Fy or they did anyway

Jura 08-06-2009 12:34 AM

Too bad it was canceled. Apparently Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer were an item and just got engaged.

Jura 08-06-2009 12:35 AM

Apparently I've become a TMZ employee after giving out that bit of information.

Your gay and I hate you

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 12:44 AM

I'm straight, but I love you

IC Champion 08-06-2009 12:55 AM

Not every scifi show is trying to replace gay ass Buffy, if you watched the show, you would know this, but you're an idiot so you don't and pass jugdement anyway.

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:06 AM

I didn't literally mean they are trying to copy those specific shows, rather the stories contained, the messages, ideas, are pretty bland and nothing special.

Just my opinion. They could very well be good shows but don't really offer anything new or good for my enjoyment. Moonlight aired for one season for a reason, and I dunno, I just don't like these types of shows.

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:07 AM

And for the record, I didn't really like Buffy, but I understand and recognise why it was such a big hit, for so long, with different audiences.

Jura 08-06-2009 01:08 AM

What do you like then?

Jura 08-06-2009 01:08 AM

Besides Instant Classic.

IC Champion 08-06-2009 01:09 AM

I don't care if somethings been done before, I care how well it's been done.

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:14 AM

I care how well its been done too, but that is partly based on how original, new, and how different it comes off from shows I have seen and shows alike. Why is that so bad? its not like I can force myself to like it or pretend I havn't seen the same type of characters, which take part in similar stories, with the same tone of programming with the same bland acting.

I've seen bits and pieces of episodes from each shows, i have given them chances, and I just don't find them entertaining, or choose to invest much interest and emotion into its mythology or story.

IC Champion 08-06-2009 01:16 AM

Finding them not entertaining is one thing, however your reasons for doing so are ridiculous. If you want to compare Buffy to a show on HBO go ahead, let me know when your head is out of your ass.

Seth82 08-06-2009 01:17 AM

Damn is it really cancelled?

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:23 AM

LOL wtf?

So why would I watch a show when I think everything I have just said?

If anything your the one with your head up your ass, just because a show is on HBO, and only for that reason, your gonna watch the show out of habit because of that fact? I'm not saying HBO doesn't produce top quality stuff; The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Six Feet Under are three of of my ten shows of all time. Your right to mention HBO, but to go about what entertainment you take in based on that kind of thinking, your never going to find the rare gems of shows, or the ones you never heard of that are just as special.

Seth82 08-06-2009 01:27 AM

Moonlight was another good short lived vamp series on CBS

and HBO is known for making the best shows

trueblood is alot more entertaining then Buffy ever was

IC Champion 08-06-2009 01:27 AM

LOL, I watch anything that is supposed to be good, and not just glances of an episode here or there, thats how I find the gems.

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:29 AM

OK, if that's what you think fair enough

If that's a fact, then in time its fan base will grow, merchandise will sell, critical acclaim will be positive and it will last for many seasons.

IC Champion 08-06-2009 01:31 AM

Until then it's not worth watching, eh?

See there you go, that's the main difference. You watch anything that is supposed to be good, you seem to come off as a 'sheep viewer'; 'It's on HBO' 'You have to watch it' 'You will love it'.

I'll try shows that took a while to grow, I'll watch a series from any channel, I'll pick a programme from any point in time, from any country, from any genre; Twin Peaks to Trailer Park Boys; The Sopranos to LOST, The Office to The Office.

I don't watch it because it's supposed to be good, I'll watch it if it is good.

I will give a show a chance if I hear good things and read postive reviews, if I don't like it, or it isn't any good I won't continue to watch. I was stating give a show more the a glance or two. I will give shows a fair chance, rather than base my opinion on preconcieved notions I already before watching the show.

Jon Kano 08-06-2009 01:43 AM

I guess if I tried to answer that in relation to your own admission about the acting, then it would stem from the fact that its one aspect I really notice and pay attention to, which is the main one; It ruins the mood I'm trying to get into with that kind of show, sometimes it makes me cringe even. It causes a ripple effect into the overall enjoyability and thus I don't feel like investing any emotion into the characters, their story, and the idea of the show.

Its just not for me.

See I didn't hear anything about Trueblood, I saw the trailers and gave it a go. I took a chance on a small perception I gained from a simple trailer, not someone else's. I didn't like it. For reasons that are innate to its entire foundation as a form of entertainment, traits that cannot change nor can I accept as a good thing.

Anyway, as a fan of programming debate, you have been somewhat refreshing. I'm offski to fall a sleep to some Office US :D

I rememer seeing a commericial for the Office US back when it first came on and thinking it looked retarded, Office is now one of my favourite shows. Ok, now I'm the one clarifing myself again; I HAVE seen the first 3 epsiodes of Trueblood, a choice I made based on only seeing a trailer. Not, in your case, because of what someone else said.

Unlike me, you have actually said one thing, which apparently 'meant the complete opposite', with regard to WHY you choose to watch something.

I'm not a moron at all, I'm an estute and aware film and tv viewer and writer, who has been studing TV and film since I was 16, which is 8 years. You are just apparently venting out some form of anger you have towards me because I don't like a TV show that you like  Deal with it ffs.

Why are they taking a week off before the finale?

To stretch out the season.

Half the time, you won't watch something because of something stupid and superficial.

What, you expect me to let that one lie?

Next week is labor day and a lot people will most likely be away for the weekend

I watched the first episode and it was OK, but I'm not really sure if it is something I would get into. Does this show get a lot better over time, or are the other episodes pretty much the same thing as the first one?

Each season feels different while still "feeling like" True Blood. Second season is much better than the first and I'll hold my opinion about the third season until it's over.
