I only really like Gordon of all them, Karen O would be cool if she didnt dress as stupidly as she does.

Would still tap it though.

None of them bowl me over, in fact I don't consider any of them to have particularly mind blowing voices at all, I mean some of the ones WeX mentioned I know of and I give props, because obviously sheer vocal ability is not the only factor to consider but still, none of the ones Penner mentioned come across as having any particular presence to make up for a lack of talent either.

the list was based on talent, not on looks. not sure why that would even come into play in a discussion about vocal skills.

El Fangel 12-22-2008 08:22 PM

I merely commented on who I liked out of all them. (I like Sonic Youth) I dont care for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and thats increased by how stupid Karen O looks.

Talent wise yes, your list is quite accurate.

I like Agent M

mitchables 12-22-2008 10:03 PM

Yeah, I give all three of the listed options a big 1/10.

WeX has the right idea. I would also nominate Andrea Zollo (Pretty Girls Make Graves), Kathryn Calder (The New Pornographers, Immaculate Machine), Neko Case (formerly The New Pornographers), Bjork, and Julia Stone (Angus & Julia Stone).

It can be. She was flawless in the AOL sessions. But put her live at most any other performance and she is absolutely horrible.

Out of the three, Hayley kind of wins by default.

Disagree.

mitchables 12-24-2008 10:50 AM

Not that whether or not she's gorgeous matters in the slightest. I personally think she has a very plain voice. It's pretty indistinguishable as far as most pop vocalists go.

To be fair, her vocals are pretty heavily processed even live, so it's hard to say. But she really does nothing remarkable.

Then again, the defining characteristic of "talent" seems to be "which one makes my peepee rise," so I suppose whether or not she's a good singer is moot.

Penner 12-24-2008 12:04 PM

That's not what I said. I think she's a good singer. That video gave me goosebumps. She can hit the notes that she needs to and I think it sounds just as good on record if not better.

She has trouble hitting the notes she needs to, and of course she sounds better on record. They heavily engineer the Evanescence records.

Nah. Pretty sure there isn't a single video out there where her voice is anywhere near the quality it reached in the AOL sessions. VH1 sessions sucked balls, and -old- AOL sessions sucked balls. She is very hit and miss, and that makes her way less than spectacular to me. Fuck.. the live CD she released was horrible too. Like, if you know you're going to be recording a live CD, at least do something to make yourself sound better. Her voice was all over the place, and she couldn't hold a note to save her life.

Also, Avril Lavigne has a horrible live voice as well. She also turned -way- too pop the last several years. Doesn't look any different than other female pop singers.

Hayley is the only one with raw singing talent out of those three. I absolutely hate their normal music, but when she sings acoustic it is awesome.

Sorry I meant just as good AS on the record. I saw a video of her Avril doing "I'm With You" and she hit ALL the notes.

I know they heavily engineer Evanescence records. It doesn't matter Amy Lee sounds MUCH better live than on record.

Because she sounds SICK in that video.

Penner 12-24-2008 03:20 PM

Her voice is just so passionate. (Amy Lee)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqd2F...eature=related

LaLa 12-24-2008 03:44 PM

Haley has the best voice out of the women you listed, Amy Lee is a hit or miss, she sounds great on records but not so good during live performances sometimes. And Avril Lavigne's voice sounds like shit.

Kane Knight 12-24-2008 03:52 PM

Passion doesn't make a good vocalist. IT helps the artistic measures, but she has trouble holding the notes she wants to, as Req said. Her range isn't that good when you consider how she seems to strain with a lot of both her upper and lower end (Mostly her upper), she's pretty limited. And that's fine, but it doesn't make her a good vocalist.

Requiem 12-24-2008 11:43 PM

No that is not it, and I really don't like her at all in that video. She sounds really sketchy through a lot of that and her voice isn't really steady at all.

These are the AOL sessions I'm talking about. They are hard to find now.. even AOL doesn't seem to have them up anymore. IMO, the only truly good work she's done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko-jr9v63nA&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODavK...feature&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzP8f...feature&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS2YT...feature&fmt=18

IMO, that is the type of music she should be singing. Yeah, she can sing fine on a record with her rock stuff.. but her performances of those songs live suck 99% of the time. I love the fact that she converted these into a completely different song, and they sound great. That's the stuff she should stick with.. not the whole rocker bit, as it doesn't fit her style at all and sounds like crap. And a single performance of a few songs does not make an artist amazing by any means. If she could churn out music of that quality consistently, then I'd start to give her some more respect.

Penner 12-25-2008 12:35 PM

Ok forget I said ON THE RECORD. I MEANT SHE IS BETTER LIVE THAN ON THE RECORD.

Requiem 12-25-2008 02:31 PM

What? That is pretty much the point that people have been trying to make, is that she sucks live. That's what -I've- been saying.. is that those few AOL performances are the only good thing she's done, because I don't give two shits if someone can sing on a record. Anyone can sing on a record.. it's when they can pull the same shit off live the same, or better, or at least make up for it with an all around kick ass show.

She can't do any of that shit, therefore she is not that great. Like I said.. 1 night performing a few songs spectacularly does not make up for the rest of the time sounding like piss. I'm not sure you even know what you're saying, tbh.

Penner 12-26-2008 01:52 PM

Everyone keeps replying "Yes of course she can sing good on the record, anyone can" but in my personal opinion, I feel she is much better live and ANY time I've seen her I still feel that way. I don't feel she is shaky, or that she can't hit the notes, the passion in her voice and her talent shines through.

Show me a bad video.

Kane Knight 12-26-2008 02:31 PM

I'm betting Penner can't carry a tune.

Penner 12-28-2008 07:59 PM

I'm not saying I'm an amazing singer, but I consider myself pretty musical because I play guitar and have been studying music for a while.

So I don't get why any of your opinions are "more right" than mine.

Kane Knight 12-29-2008 09:33 AM

Well, when you cross over into factual territory, (she can hit the notes she wants to) and you're arguing against people who understand pitch, you lose the right to argue "opinion" in the first place. It no longer matters what you "feel," you are objectively wrong.

Penner 12-29-2008 09:35 AM

Nope. She hits the notes and she's on key.

Requiem 12-29-2008 03:46 PM

5% of the time doesn't count. That's what you're not getting here. I can hit quality notes 5% of the time. The rest of the time, I couldn't sing to save my life.

Penner 12-29-2008 04:24 PM

Nope. 100% of the time.

Requiem 12-29-2008 05:17 PM

It's hard to argue with you when you're hell-bent on being an idiot, blinded by how big of a hopeless fanboy you are. A lot of the videos I've watched of her, also have her voice heavily aided by electronic means, whether to create a crisper sound, or to drag out her notes even after she stops singing. She isn't that great of a singer.. put her in a lounge and give her a piano and plenty of time to prepare, and she can sound great singing slow songs. As a rocker, she fails.

Penner 12-29-2008 06:25 PM

No it's impossible to argue with you because you already assume that I'm wrong.
There's no point in arguing.

In my opinion, I think she sings great in her own unique way. She's even said in interviews that she doesn't sing the way she should.

I don't care though. She's fine. I like how her voice sounds and I'd rather hear her live than on the record anyday.

Kane Knight 01-02-2009 12:12 PM

And when someone tells me that there are 57 states in the US, I enter such a discussion with the mindset that they're wrong, too. Or that they're taking the piss. I'm still praying you're doing the latter, because if you're that tone deaf....But then, you enter with a ridiculously limited mindset of your own, based on self-vindication.

Her "way" isn't unique. It just seems that way because most people who sing like her don't sell records. Of course, Amy's someone people want to put their dicks in, so she bypasses that portion.

And she still doesn't hit the notes she wants to hit. The blatant use of pitch correction indicates that. If she was supposed to sing like shit, she wouldn't need pitch correction and pro tools. A good vocalist can reliably sing in a bad style, rather than taking a spray and pray approach to singing.

Penner 01-02-2009 01:25 PM

However she does it live, by herself without any help is what I like. I like REAL singers. Even if you think she is somewhat flawed, it's her own song and she can do whatever she wants with it.

This is such a stupid way to argue. Your analogies are so ridiculous. This doesn't prove your point at all.

Requiem 01-02-2009 05:28 PM

You're the one making shit up you stupid spastic. That's what KK is saying. She doesn't sound good without the aid of electronics. You're the one making shit up saying she sounds brilliant on her own. That's why I linked those videos.. they are the ONLY time she's managed to sound good on her own. And that DOESN'T make her a good singer.

Saying 'she can do whatever she wants' doesn't mean it sounds good. When she doesn't use electronic correction for her voice, it sounds like SHIT. If you think that makes her a good singer just because she -can- do it without aid.. then you must think I'm fucking brilliant because I can stand on a stage all day and wail off-key.. but I'd be doing it on my own without any aid, so that must mean I'm fucking good.

Jesus Christ.. we get it. You like shit. You don't have to lie to yourself and others and keep insisting that the shit is really a brick of gold, when it's clearly a pile of brown shit, stinking and smelling up the world.

It's not intended to prove my point, so much as demonstrate that when someone makes false claims, I tend to view them as wrong, because false equals wrong.

In terms you can understand, "stupid claims are stupid. When people say stupid things, it's hard to treat them seriously."

Req's covered it pretty well, but she's a REAL vocalist only in the sense that anyone who sings is a REAL vocalist. She spends a lot of time at the top and bottom of her range, and she strains with both. I mean, everyone does it occasionally, especially live where your range can be artificially confined, but to do it constantly....That's bad. A real vocalist shouldn't be doing that. A real vocalist should probably nail the transition bits, too.

Requiem 01-04-2009 06:49 PM

As much as I dislike pop music and all that, Christina Aguilera is a talented vocalist. She oversings like crazy, but she has a real range and actually -does- sound good live, unlike Amy Lee.

No, I wouldn't actively listen to her music, but there's no denying that she actually has talent, which is something a lot of mainstream female singers don't actually have.

Indeed, Aguilera has RIDICULOUS vocal range, and yeah she does oversing like crazy as I think has been discussed here before, but regardless the girl has a hell of a voice.

Of these choices I do go in order of Amy Lee, Hayley Williams, and Avril Lavigne. But I would also nominate Lacey from Flyleaf and Christina Scabbia.

She's not above average. She's actually kind of below average, and way below if you're talking professional vocalists.

This, again, really isn't debatable. You're allowed to like her, you're allowed to love her, you can think she's awesome, but that probably just means you have poor pitch perception or you like crap. You tend to like whatever pop act comes along, so I'm guessing the latter. But when you talk about her skills, she doesn't have many.

This isn't the grand persecution you make it out to be.

And to answer the question:

Aside from growling and grunting, Lacey is unspectacular. She tends to sing in a really pinched nasally voice that sounds like she listened to a Letters to Cleo record and tried to copy Kay Hanley verbatim.

What are you talking about?

You seem to have a hard on for such acts as Panic at the Disco and MCR. Since you like those, and Avril Lavigne and Hailey, it's safe to say you like plenty of other 'radio phenomenons', who make their success from MTV saying it's cool to like them.

lol no I don't like Panic at The Disco and MCR. Maybe their first CDs before they got famous but I was only chirping the fact that so many losers go to those festivals just to bottle bands.

I'm not a mainstreamer by any means, I was just commenting on the fact that I enjoy these three female singers.

I can't get into any of these singers' work.

I would be able to get into evanecense, but I've heard Lacuna Coil, so there goes that.
