According to several people we've spoken to today, there are expected to be WWE talents released as part of today's economic cutbacks. As soon as we confirm some of the names we've heard, we'll have them here on PWInsider.com.
D'lo Brown, Val Venis, Kevin Thorn, and Bam Neely are gone.

Xero 01-09-2009 01:38 PM

Jamie Noble
Ron Simmons
Jimmy Yang
Jesse
Festus
Burchill

Gonna say at least three from that list will be gone, assuming this isn't a developmental purging.

Let me rephrase that, I mean to put Brian Kendrick... They kind of look alike.
Thanks.

Huh?

I must have missed that memo.

What Would Kevin Do? 01-09-2009 01:55 PM

It looks like Colt Cabana will be back in ROH soon....

Yay!

Destor 01-09-2009 01:56 PM

Chavo Classic 01-09-2009 02:09 PM

I'll bet my Kizhouse on Kizarny not being one of them

Hanso Amore 01-09-2009 02:19 PM

Basically, no on that is on TV.

TBK is safe, as is MVP.

Ryder and Hawkins will probably get canned.

Noble is an agent so probably not.

Same with Simmons.

The Burchills are done.

Sim Snuka. = gone

Bam neely= gone

Lock Jaw 01-09-2009 02:25 PM

I'm pulling for Venis and Helms to be released. Helms is probably a long shot right now.

Destor 01-09-2009 02:34 PM

Helms is def a long shot.

Lock Jaw 01-09-2009 02:41 PM

See, I've had this pool running since 2005. We each picked ten "superstars". Whoever has all of theirs released first wins. All I need to win is for Venis and Helms to be released.

Seems like a decent shout. They're not doing anything with them after all.

I hope they don't fire Tiffany. She is ridiculously hot. Where the hell did she come from anyway?

KingofOldSchool 01-09-2009 07:21 PM

Val Venis has been fired.

I want to have sex with her face.

KingofOldSchool 01-09-2009 07:29 PM

Instead of bite clubs, Kevin Thorn is going to start frequenting the unemployment line as he got his pink slip today as well.

Anybody Thrilla 01-09-2009 07:32 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOO! Kevin Thorn was almost sort of interesting for a few minutes! Man, so much wasted potential.

Anybody Thrilla 01-09-2009 07:33 PM

I guess Stevie got the last laugh in that feud....or wait, has he been fired yet?

KingofOldSchool 01-09-2009 07:33 PM

The WWE Universe message boards are rioting over D-lo's release.

I actually hope so, too. She wants to train to wrestle, and she is very, very hot. Out of the Divas, I see Jillian Hall maybe being cut. Candice Michelle should go, too, but she won't.

D-Lo Brown and Bam Neely are gone, as are referees Mike Posey and Jimmy Korderas. The latest of those names actually surprises me. He's been with the WWE for years. :(

Mr. Nerfect 01-09-2009 08:23 PM

It's a shame about Val Venis, but it's an understandable cut. They don't really do anything with him, and he often spends a bit of time injured. This could be a blessing in disguise for him.

"Heeeeellllllllllloooo, Puerto Rico! Heh, heh, heh."

Mr. Nerfect 01-09-2009 08:25 PM

So far, the list currently stands as:

-Kevin Keenan
-Mike Posey
-D-Lo Brown
-Bam Neely
-Jimmy Korderas
-Val Venis

How Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Hardcore Holly and The Boogeyman have survived is beyond me.

He still gets better reactions than a good 80% of the roster and it's not like he is on every show. So having him is more cost effective than keeping someone like Val who is under contract.

It's not like he out-popped DX. If the WWE wants someone who is over to come back and work a match now and then, they should get Scotty 2 Hotty.

Why does it matter?

He doesn't win and he's just there as a Legend who puts others over from time to time. Plus he is a bigger name than Scotty.

Anybody Thrilla 01-09-2009 08:40 PM

I wonder if they will put Hacksaw in the Rumble based solely on the fact that he won the first one.

Shadow 01-09-2009 08:54 PM

Lulz....Venis finally gets fired. Took 'em long enough.

Dorkchop 01-09-2009 09:02 PM

I think it would be funny if we went to TNA and decided he didn't want to be a jobber. Knowing TNA they'd give him a PPV title shot within 2 months.

Because they have to pay 2 sets of crew, agents, writers, producers, crew, wrestlers, announcers.

If they cant sell out, their costs outweigh their profits, and then they have to cut.

There are major TV costs, which is why they run ECW with another brand...to save money.

Mr. Nerfect 01-09-2009 10:13 PM

I think the relationship between the talent cuts and a proposal to end the brand split would be the shrinking of the rosters. If enough talent is cut, then you may not have enough for separate brands, which would logically mean the current arrangement is not convenient.

For that matter, what reason does he have to think they need or want an excuse?

Except wishful thinking.

It would also give them a chance to start booking well, but I doubt they think they need that, either.

NeanderCarl 01-09-2009 10:57 PM

Ending the brand split would mean half as many live events. Not a great way to make more money.

Even if they still run B-shows instead of, say, SmackDown shows (I know, I know...) they will still be tarnished with the "lesser show" label, although the Intercontinental title used to draw well on the B-Show circuit in the 80s. Doubt it would today unless it was worn by the likes of Batista or Jericho, which I'm sure would be a move derided by fans and the wrestlers as a step-down.

They've invested too heavily in the brand split for the last 7 years for it to end now, whether we like it or not. A large number of their current fans have probably never seen a WWE product that didn't have a divided roster.

JT 01-09-2009 11:48 PM

I guess the real look at it is this...is the amount of money that is brought in by two seperate rosters earn enough that two seperate rosters is effecient. The points have are making more money by holding two shows, but at the same time you are also using two seperate crews.

Now I say if you cut enough people you are going to keep the people who are more interesting to see and bring a better television product each week (well, I know history says otherwise, but I'm hoping for what I said to be true). If you have a better show, then chances are they will do better than 1 of the two seperate rosters. However, you are also once again taking in effect the amount of money given out to their crew and talent.

I think in the end it's hard to decide what is best to do without all the fact. It's even hard to decide what's good as a product...remember 7 years ago we were clammering for the seperate rosters because it would help showcase wrestlers we like but didn't get airtime...and yet that didn't happen. Bringing the roster's back together might be a little more interesting at first, until wrestlers who do get showcased now (Jericho, CM Punk, Legacy, etc) get no airtime for the likes of HHH, John Cena, and Batista.

And that is the only real point that matters. There are a bunch of pros to this as far as WWE is concerned. There are certainly cons, even in their minds. But being able to market "Raw" and "Smackdown" house shows is more beneficial than the "TV tapings" and "Also rans." That alone is probably going to keep things going. That and Triple H probably doesn't want to work Mondays.

Savio 01-10-2009 12:10 AM

The days when ratings were the be-all-and-end-all for WWE pretty much died along with WCW. I mean, of course they still matter... bad ratings would risk the show getting cancelled which would be disasterous, and the more people watching equals more potential consumers... but television is pretty much mainly a 2 hour advertisement for WWE products (yes, that includes the wrestlers) and live events, with a paint-by-numbers wrestling show built around it.

WWE is a touring company making most of its money on the road. They won't end the brand split to create better television because having a tremendous TV show hasn't mattered since 2001. Keeping the TV show afloat enough to showcase the talent and conflicts so that people will buy PPVs and go see the live event when it comes to their city is the main priority.

Two touring groups equals double the earning potential for the company, and having the two distinct brands to advertise said shows keeps things clear and consise in promoting them.
