Windows 7 beta?

It was supposed to be released to the public today but I can't seem to find anything on it on any Microsoft sites. Link?

G 01-09-2009 04:26 PM

This would be awesome (the beta). Then I will need a how to on making a partition with it.

G 01-09-2009 04:31 PM

As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer promised at CES 2009 during his preshow keynote, the Windows 7 beta is now available to the public for download. It is only available to the first 2.5 million people who download it, so make sure to get your hands on it as soon as you can!

Link is dead, so I think we missed it.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2009 04:46 PM

It was only for the first 2.5 million people and it's gone now.

The page has now been replaced with "Windows 7 Beta coming soon" so there will be another phase. Not sure if it will be limited again or not though.

x84 (32-bit version) http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4632608/Windows_7_Beta

x64 (64-bit version) http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4631..._Unleashed.iso

No activators for this yet, but you can use it for 30 days without activating. I can almost guarantee you that a crack will be out before that 30 days is up anyways.

Current legit beta keys work until August 2009, a cracked version will probably last longer.

As for partitioning and dual-booting, these were the guides I used (I set up someone elses PC as well and he had Vista on it)

http://owened.co.nz/Owenedv2/?p=481 - If you have Vista

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vi...creenshots.htm - If you have XP (Replace Vista references with Windows 7)

RUN AN UPDATE BEFORE PLAYING AN MP3 FILE

There's a bug that takes off a few seconds of a played MP3. There's already a patch though.

Oh and if you have a 64-bit processor, defo get the x64 one. It's ultimate unlike the x84 builds :D

G 01-09-2009 04:50 PM

The site you were trying to access is blocked

Gotta love public computers.

Wow, thanks BC.

G 01-09-2009 06:24 PM

Downloading BC's link @ 90kbs. What are your rates.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2009 06:39 PM

BC: It's the link registering that's down, unless you subscribe to MSDN or some shit

Bad Company 01-10-2009 04:25 AM

http://blog.hznet.nl/2009/01/10/how-...-windows-7-key

Good luck, I haven't been able to get a key yet, so if anyone can get a spare x64 key it'd be nice :p

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 04:36 AM

Please try again in the next business day!!!!

But thats 2 days away!!!! :'(

Looks like the minimum specs are high. I just went down to 512mb and this things still faster than XP.

Requiem 01-10-2009 07:26 AM

I've got the link for the keys set to auto-refresh using c4c in firefox. Heard that some people got a key after an hour or two of this. I'm sure there will be a crack or something out in the next month, but I'd like to just go ahead and activate it already.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 07:35 AM

Same, I'm checking the error text so I'm hoping that it doesn't come up "Error: Here is your key" :shifty:

Requiem 01-10-2009 07:40 AM

lol yeah, same

Vietnamese Crippler 01-10-2009 08:28 AM

I just thought forget it and installed it anyway. It's not bad so far, surprisingly fast for running on Virtual PC.

Now if only I could get the beta ATI drivers to work properly

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 08:49 AM

Did you try using the ones that are not updated by Windows Update automatically? They work perfect on my x1600

Requiem 01-10-2009 09:59 AM

Yesss.. got my key. Don't give up, if you don't have one yet. :D

Now I just have to wait for DS to finish downloading it and burning it for me, cause my DVD burner doesn't work. :(

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 10:06 AM

I've got a spare after all that refreshing for anyone who wants it. Should work on either 32 bit or x64.

First to reply is teh winnar, unless I don't like you :shifty:

Requiem 01-10-2009 10:56 AM

Could I have it to give to DS? :)

G 01-10-2009 11:07 AM

Fuck DS, give it to me. I posted, he didn't

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 11:14 AM

Req/DS winz

G 01-10-2009 11:20 AM

haha, it took me one try to get one. Awesome. I guess the mad rush is over or something.

G 01-10-2009 11:23 AM

It's got to be. I got 10 keys for the hell of it. It just rotates through the same keys after that.

G 01-10-2009 02:45 PM

guy from gbatemp says

Also here is a watermark fixer that I tested myself and it worked perfectly. It removes that "Windows 7 Build 7000" text on your desktop.
If this shouldn't be posted here then mods can remove it.
Link: http://localhostr.com/files/4276f4/WatermarkFix.zip

Right click the exe, and select Run as Administrator! It won't work without it. Let it run, and wait until the "Windows will shutdown..." message. Only then can you restart the computer. (because it opens a few cmd windows, with delays in between them, and the first time I tried it I thought it finished but it didn't http://gbatemp.net/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

P.S. If it effs up your Windows, it's not my fault. I tested it on 2 installs and it worked well.

The ones I'm using are beta Windows 7 drivers from the ATI website (using an HD 4870, btw).

I'm wondering if it's not working because I'm using a Virtual PC rather than just installing straight onto my hard drive.

G 01-10-2009 04:07 PM

I guess you don't want me to send you a key anymore. ;)

Vietnamese Crippler 01-10-2009 04:18 PM

Literally, as I just sent that post, I found another method that worked right off the bat :p

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2009 04:22 PM

No, reading around, the beta drivers on the ATi site are shite and not worth bothering with.

You can't use them at all in x64 mode without disabling the driver check

Vietnamese Crippler 01-10-2009 04:43 PM

Can you link me to the drivers you're using?

Bad Company 01-10-2009 04:49 PM

Got my Keys. Woooo

Vietnamese Crippler 01-10-2009 05:04 PM

It's about time BC

Triple A 01-10-2009 07:19 PM

It's back up officially on the Microsoft site now...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...-download.aspx

Bad Company 01-10-2009 11:11 PM

So I formatted by Vista Partition and will be running x64 Windows 7 as my Primary OS now.

G 01-10-2009 11:13 PM

What am I missing, why would you run a beta as a primary?

Bad Company 01-11-2009 01:03 AM

Because I'm the man.

G 01-11-2009 01:07 AM

"It's Not Man-Rape if you yell SURPRISE!"

Bad Company 01-11-2009 02:13 AM

But seriously, I work with Windows, well, I used to, and I want to keep my skillset up. The easiest way to learn a product is to jump in the deep end.

Requiem 01-11-2009 05:23 AM

What is going to happen when the beta ends? Are they going to let you upgrade straight to Windows 7 or what? Cause if not, then you have to back up all your shit before formatting again..

They came through on Windows update, I didn't get them off a site.

Req: It shuts down August 1 2009 without any warning. Windows 7 probably won't be out yet so no upgrade. I bet there will be a crack to extend the beta though.

Right now, I just overwrote my Ubuntu partition but I've not set it up to boot XP at all.

One bug I have found so far, firewire HD doesn't work :(

I'm sure BC understands how to BACK STUFF UP :o

I tried updating through Windows Update but it keeps telling me that there are no new updates :(

I guess I can deal without the video drivers; it's not like I'm planning on gaming on a beta.

Triple A 01-11-2009 05:43 AM

Working pretty tremendous here so far.

G 01-11-2009 11:25 AM

I'm so impatient. Not going to be home until tonight. I want to mess with this so bad. :(

Bad Company 01-11-2009 03:27 PM

I only have applications on my C drive, so reformatting is a piece of piss.

I'm using Vista X64 Drivers for everything and they run great.

G 01-11-2009 04:10 PM

Would this just be easier to install on m 2nd hdd that is only used for storage? How would uninstalling be, as in removing win7 but leaving my files on there.

Bad Company 01-11-2009 04:20 PM

I tried that the other day, couldn't remove the program files directory afterwards, so about 200mb.

Requiem 01-11-2009 04:39 PM

When I install, I'm just going to install it to a new partition on my primary, that way I still have access to all my things on my storage drive, and so I can just wipe it clean when the beta is over really easily.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-11-2009 04:54 PM

Oh yeah, you might not see your old OS partition. The beta doesn't give it a drive letter automatically, you have to go into disk management and do it manually

Funky Fly 01-11-2009 06:17 PM

K, so how would you nigras compare this ish to Vista?

The start menu/task bar seem more functional. Have to still play with all the features. Quicker, too.

Triple A 01-11-2009 07:57 PM

I don't know if it's because I reformatted my comp or what, but it seems to be running way faster than Vista. Just everything in general. Like thumbnails are created almost automatically with barely any loading time and everything just feels faster loading.

Requiem 01-11-2009 11:39 PM

I am using Windows 7 right now. I like it so far. It has some cool features, and it seems to be running pretty smooth and fast.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-12-2009 01:27 AM

It's faster than XP with an improved look of Vista, with less frequent annoying prompts and some nice new features.

Basically, it's the OS Vista should have been.

Requiem 01-12-2009 01:28 AM

^Yep. Just said that to someone like 10 seconds ago. "What Vista should have been."

I wish it was out already so I could upgrade to it permanently. As it is, I think I'm gonna run it primarily until the beta is over.

Triple A 01-13-2009 12:16 AM

Running it as my primary OS now too. I have seen no real glitches so far. Windows Explorer randomly crashed once (actually never happened to me in Vista ever) but that is about it.

Also it is using so much less RAM that it is incredible. With Vista it used to always go up to like 65% if I was using the comp for a while and everything would start to get all choppy. Now I have like 3 Adobe programs open, bunch of Firefox tabs and random other windows and it's only at 40%

#BROKEN Hasney 01-13-2009 01:22 AM

Yeah, IE is the buggiest part of the beta, everything else is stable as hell

Anyone else got a minor problem with video files? When I double-click them, it says that I do not have permission to open then, or cannot find the file. I have to drag them to an open WMP window manually.

K found out it was because I hadn't activated Windows at the time. Activated today and the update showed up.

I can't wait for the release. :(
