What Would Kevin Do? 01-11-2009 12:48 PM

Gran torino (Go see it now!)

I can't believe there isn't a thread about this movie. This movie is amazing. It's hilarious yet touching/sad. It's even more hilarious if you know someone, especially in your family, like Walt (Clint Eastwood.), who is basically a hard ass, pissed off, racist, crotchety old man. There are so many things I love about this movie, and I might go see it again.

Oddly enough, I think I was the youngest person in the theater watching it, yet the theater was packed with older people. It's probably Clint Eastwood's following, but still, more people need to see this movie.

Requiem 01-11-2009 12:50 PM

Yeah, it was pretty good.

PapaGeorgio 01-11-2009 12:59 PM

I enjoyed it. It was 5 stars for me entertainment wise, but I have trouble rating it artistically. I dunno.

Jeritron 01-11-2009 01:14 PM

Saw it and loved it

PorkSoda 01-11-2009 01:21 PM

My step dad got a bootleg DVD of it last night. It's in the other room right now.

I want to go see it in theatres though.....

IC Champion 01-11-2009 01:34 PM

Really an amazing film.

Clint Eastwood is so fucking good.

Triple Naitch 01-11-2009 08:34 PM

Easily the best film of 2009 so far. :shifty:

The movie was hilarious and touching. And it is even better when you know someone like him. The ending was fitting.

PorkSoda 01-11-2009 09:06 PM

It's about the only film of 2009 so far....

Triple Naitch 01-11-2009 09:27 PM

Hence: :shifty:

G 01-12-2009 06:35 PM

Wow, that looks good.

Arashi Kage 01-12-2009 06:52 PM

Saw it on Saturday night, amazing film, I think it became one of my all time favorite films, but I'll have to watch it again. :y:

I didn't get a good look at the theatre demographic, but I think it was mostly typical Saturday 10pm show audience (ie: late teens - 20's). I didn't notice when we walked out, but my friend said that a large contingent of asian people were there - and we wondered how they may have felt at times.

thedamndest 01-12-2009 07:13 PM

I have only seen 20-second spots for it, and wanted to see it from those. That two minute trailer made it look that much more awesome.

IC Champion 01-12-2009 07:20 PM

You need to see it damndest, you really do. Now Go.

YOUR Hero 01-12-2009 09:00 PM

I hearit's real good. I've always been an Eastwood fan.

thedamndest 01-12-2009 09:38 PM

Didn't you guys grow up together?

Kapoutman 01-12-2009 11:47 PM

It's the next movie I'm gonna see.

The Naitch 01-13-2009 12:26 AM

G 01-13-2009 11:03 AM

Finished downloading. Gonna watch it today sonnnnnnnnnn

G 01-13-2009 03:44 PM

That was such a good movie. Little disappointed there wasn't dance with the song at the end.

Blitz 01-13-2009 09:20 PM

Just saw it. Excellent movie, one of the best I've seen in a while.

Word to the wise. For some reason, the trailer makes it look like an action flick, badass old dude vs a gang. It's not really that. Much more complex.

BCWWF 01-18-2009 09:28 PM

Gran Torino

Finally saw it and absolutely loved it. I really think this is a truly great movie about America.

The premise is that Clint Eastwood is an old, racist, crotchety Korean War veteran who refuses to move out of his neighborhood after is has been taken over by Hmong immigrants. At first he hates them, but then he takes kind of a father role over his neighbor family and helps them escape gang trouble.

There are parts of the movie that are truly hilarious — namely the cultural observations and Eastwood's general racism. The writing is very very good.

The theme of the movie though is revenge, and that's my favorite element in a movie. First it's just Eastwood standing up to random gang members, but as gets closer to his neighbors and starts helping them it becomes much bigger. Eastwood has to redeem himself from the war and save this family from the assholes in the gangs.

Everything is just so genuine though. The story wasn't overdone and the dialogue wasn't corny or anything. The ending was perfectly done and so powerful. It was the perfect movie because you laugh throughout the whole beginning and really really get to know these characters, and by the end you are so invested and get so upset when — not going to spoil.

Really though, I'd recommend this movie to anyone. I think it is one of the greatest movies about America I've ever seen.

The screenplay was written and based in St. Paul originally, so it had a lot of local interest to begin with. Not sure if the local connections were a big reason why I liked it, but the the story and the screenplay were so genuine and awesome.

G 01-18-2009 09:42 PM

Never heard of it.

God this was a badass movie

Triple A 01-19-2009 07:47 AM

Yeah it was good.

Alan The Rapist 01-22-2009 04:10 PM

He probably should have made sure the Korean girl was acting instead of not acting, but he also spent the movie calling them zips and squares, so it evens out. Also, he died in Jesus position after sacrificing himself. I enjoyed the movie, but Jesus Death? Eh.

Big Fat Mike 01-22-2009 04:12 PM

It was fantesitcle. I got a bootleg last week and have watched it about 4 times so far. Hold on gonna go watch it again.

wow. you live up to your name so well, you "raped" me of an ending that i actually wanted to see. do you know how to use the "spolier" feature or do you just not care?

honestly ive never understood why people got mad over these kinda things, but fuck i had to watch it and leave halfway throught hte movie (friend has the connection, i watched "taken" on picture perfect bootleg...problem with that? taken doesnt come out till jan 30th) and fuck am i pissed you ruined it for me. oh well.

Blitz 01-22-2009 06:26 PM

Maybe don't come into a thread with a movie that's been out for a while if you're afraid of spoilers, Cobra.

And by your friend's "connection", I assume you mean "internet connection", since Taken came out last February in France, and thus DVD copies are no trouble at all to get.

94 SVT Cobra 01-22-2009 10:29 PM

its not an internet connection, its a real perosn who knows someone in the industry, not ONE bootleg ive seen from this connection is a "filmed in the thearter" connection, its someone who gets some sort of ill ass promotional dvds that read "this dvd is NOT for distribution" along the bottom of the screen at one point or another in all the movies

Blitz 01-22-2009 11:41 PM

Read my post. I said DVD copy, not a cam.

Alan The Rapist 01-23-2009 06:44 PM

Jeritron 01-23-2009 06:46 PM

Smells like shit in here

BCWWF 01-23-2009 08:04 PM

You guys are ruining my thread about a great movie.

El Fangel 01-25-2009 05:56 AM

Excellent movie. Have not seen anything this good in a long while.

Stickman 01-25-2009 12:34 PM

I loved this movie.

Heyman 01-29-2009 08:55 PM

Awesome movie.

I still can't decide which movie I enjoyed more: Slumdog Millionaire or Gran Torino.

u actually liked slumdog millionaire . that was the dumbest movie ever

Mr. Nerfect 02-15-2009 08:21 AM

I really liked this movie. Was surprised by how many laughs it got. It's impossible not to mark for old Clint. His best movie since Million Dollar Baby, I think.

As I was leaving the cinema, I recall people bitching about the ending. Fucking idiots. The ending was beautiful. Those same people would have bitched about the ending to Cloverfield (I know those two movies are not in the same league, but still).

Can't wait for Clint Eastwood's next one.

BCWWF 02-20-2009 01:50 PM

Again I will say that it is a travesty that this movie isn't up for Best Picture, Best Director and especially Best Screenplay.

Apparently this was Eastwood's last film

Alan The Rapist 02-20-2009 02:44 PM

And again, I will say little Korean kids were not great actors. Not being up for said awards doesn't surprise me, except maybe screenplay.

Downunder 02-20-2009 08:10 PM

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. All heart warming and shit.

I could believe that, sadly, given the subject of the film. I truly hope it is not.
