Is Santino Marella really supposed to be funny?
Because I just watched two "Santino's Casas" and thought they contained some of the worst forced comedy I've ever seen.
|
It is WWE after all.
|
A guy who creates crappy photoshopped pictures ("It's not real! get it!?!"), and creates threads with the borrowed "gimmick" of posting a picture of a lizard, is questioning the comedic talents of a man with wit, timing and delivery?
Eh, it's not the most ridiculous thing I've seen on these boards. |
I don't watch the dotcom vids, but his timing with a crowd is usually pretty good.

I think Santino Marella is funny.
I do not think Xero is funny. define funny |

But seriously, my "comedy" aside, Santino is fucking terrible. He speaks funny and makes "humorous" observations by Photoshopping his face on shit. Maybe during a promo he'll come out dressed as who he's feuding with and mix up their name and mock their gimmick.
He's not very deep, and I hardly call what he does 'witty'. He has timing, I'll give you that, but that's where it ends. Like I said, everything in the videos seemed extremely forced and, at best, passable for a skit on Nickelodeon. Yes, I realize that he's made to be marketed to the Nickelodeon crowd, but the love he gets from people around here and the community in general dumbfounds me. |
I also find Santino unfunny.

I think because it's "forced" makes it funny
|
Sometimes he's funny but then other times the accent and everything is just too forced.
|
Santino is not witty. Jericho was witty. Rock was witty. Santino just pronounces words funny and people on here suddenly are like "OMG Santino is so fucking funny. Here, look at my kids in my wallet!" BAM BAM BAM. I mean, come on.

These are the same people that praise guys like Snitsky and slam guys like CM Punk, so are you really that surprised?
|
Wow, i feel dirty after that generalization :nono:
I take it back |
You make it sound like he puts no effort into anything at all. I don't know if you're ever done comedy before but it's really hard. You're right in the fact that Santino doesn't have much material to work with but I think that also speaks leaps and bounds for his comedic timing. He can make something that is generally unfunny funny, which is an awesome trait. Also, the words that he mispronounces and how he mispronounces them are pretty ingenious sometimes. The guy knows what he's doing.
|
I find him to be funny in his quicker appearances (the business with Rosa Mendez and "Can we keep her? Pleeeeeeeeease?" on Raw was great,) but I agree with Xero about Santino's Casa. I find it funny occasionally but it usually has that constipated aspect that bad, forced comedy has.
|
Also, now that people think he's funny he's got a bunch of pressure on him now to be funny every week.

Santino is Great, on WWE Programing. After the success of The Dirt Sheet, the E just got carried away and gave anybody new with a sense of "humor" a webshow. There is no way we should have a 'Word Up" or a "Casa".

I admit, Santino's Casa isn't very good. Santino is at his best in front of a crowd and playing the clown (not like he is an actual clown, but funny as in a).
|
Still funnier than Dane Cook and Will Ferrel COMBINED.
|
So really not that funny at all.

I enjoy Santino, and I don't really feel pressed to let anybody know exactly why I do. I just do. Think about how critical people are of pro wrestling in general. Whenever somebody finds out I watch it, they're usually like "this shit is retarted", and to an extent, they're right, but I'm still going to watch it. My enjoyment of Santino is like justifying watching wrestling to people who already do, if that makes any sense.
|
He is amusing, but not like a comic genius.
|
I don't really see Santino getting an hour and a half special on HBO or appearing on Def Comedy Jam, but I definitely enjoy him for about ten minutes a week, usually less.
|
I have liked him less since he got his unibrow.

And Rock had shitty comedy*. I've always said this, specifically when comparing him to Cena. I love Rock for his range and his heel character, not his face comedy.
Still, Rock was miles ahead of Santino and I think a better a better comparison would be the bWo, which is still way off. *Post-mark days I've come to this conclusion. When I was a mark in middle school during his height, yeah, he was funny. |

The slapstick stuff is a bit much, but that's just what Santino has to work with. But I guess humour is subjective. I'll go out to further depths than most people, though, and I'll say that Santino Marella is far more witty than The Rock. While he was purely entertaining, The Rock's comedy was pretty much just him getting in people's faces and talking trash to them. Sure, it was funny at times, but I'd definitely say Santino's comedy is more developed. The guy almost made Vince McMahon, trying to be in serious heel mode, crack up laughing in his debut. That takes skill. Even if you're not big enough to admit it. |
