Led Zep is heavy metal, which is a term that is actually used to describe bands that are lighter than just "metal" bands. Glam and hair are two slightly different sub-genres, really more focused on style than substance.

And no, Motley Crue is pretty much hard rock, as is KISS. Poison is pretty much the definition of hair metal.

Glam Rock with pop undertones

Anthrax may not be great in a level of greatness similar to Priest or Iron Maiden, etc; but among the "thrash" bands (ie: Slayer, Metallica, Testament, & Anthrax), Anthrax is my favorite (primarily due to the best vocals of those four). Be All, End All is a brilliant song, and every time I end up in a traffic jam or some crowded situation (like holiday shopping) the first thing that comes to my mind is the song Mad House playing in my head. http://www.robhalford.com/quorum/ima...s/music269.gif

There are a bunch of bands that I sometimes see classified as metal, such as Van Halen, Scorpions, and Def Leppard. With Scorpions, the arguement can be made that they are metal - well, they are way closer to metal than Van Halen, lets just say that. Leppard began as a metal band, but shifted into more of a rock/pop-rock band.

Metal is just too diverse with variety and sub genre. It really has to do with context vs other bands. Priest and Sabbath, Maiden, etc are metal, but having attended Priest with Slayer, then Priest with Queensryche, then Priest with Heaven & Hell (aka Black Sabbath with Dio), if you were to judge "metal" as being Slayer, then Priest look more "hard rock" (and definately mesh much better with bands like Scorpions than bands like Slayer).

I like to think of the "pure" definition of Heavy Metal as being represented by bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Saxon, etc
- bands that have a heavier tone and more intricate guitar work than rock music, but have vocalists that actually sing. All the drop tuned guitar / horrible sounding grunt/screaming stuff are sub genres, not pure "metal".

Priest and Scorpions are my two favorite bands

Avenged Sevenfold = metalcore, although this second album is much more metal sounding.

I am not saying Anthrax is bad. They are just not as good as a lot f bands they are associated with.

Def Leppard (I love them) are not metal, nor do they pretend to be

Scorpions are probably metal, but they kinda lost it after World Wide Live; They're German so it's hard to know what they are up to.

Saxon are Metal, but they somehow missed the boat to greatness - a bloody shame because, they rock!

Queensryche, were a bit of a non event outside North America, probably due to the silly hair cut of the lead singer. Great voice, good guitars, but just didn't hit the right notes.

led zep aren't metal but communication breakdown would have a good shout at being one of the first metal songs.

Do you consider Nu Metal? Just asking.

I'm going to give the Scorpions a "more metal than not" rating. Having power ballads=not metal, but they were written back in the day so I guess that's cool.

Just had a nice little run of good luck today, the best part of which was me finally finding an Accept discography, not in shitty Lossless formats so I can put it on my iPod. And Accept is hella metal. \m/

To date, I only had Balls To The Wall on CD and Breaker and Objection Overruled in MP3 format. Pretty hard shit to find for such a kick ass and fairly well known band.

It just don't stop today. Just found an Aria discography. Russian metal, good shit.

I find I'm kind of reluctant to listen to any "metal" bands post 2000, as alot of them seem to suck, either too melodic which loses the heaviness, or just sound too generic.
