NCAA Basketball thread

I want to talk about Syracuse going into OT again!

RP 03-14-2009 12:18 AM

we do

Its called " Robbie Hummel is a Golden God and Purdue is YOUR champion "

IC Champion 03-14-2009 12:20 AM

LOL, Purdue.

RP 03-14-2009 01:24 AM

laugh now, it will happen. Purdue will be national champions this year

RatedGSuperstar 03-14-2009 10:09 PM

They'd have a better chance if Robbie Hummel wasn't playing with a BROKEN FREAKIN' NECK (TM Angle).

Selection Sunday should be interesting to say the least. If the 'Cuse can hang on against Louisville, none of the projected #1 seeds will have won their conference tournament. It was looking like Pitt-UConn-Louisville-UNC, but maybe Memphis gets a bet more consideration considering how bad Pitt looked with Blair in foul trouble. I can't really fault UConn for losing in 6 OT's, Louisville at least got to the Big East final, and I doubt they give Duke a #1 over UNC.

By the way, VCU's going to win a tournament game or two again this year. Take it from a guy who goes to a rival CAA school.

BCWWF 03-15-2009 12:38 AM

Mizzou just won the Big 12, finally getting to the tournament the year after I left.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-15-2009 02:02 PM

If Tennessee wins today, it looks like the Atlantic 10 will get more bids than the SEC.

LOL

Supreme Olajuwon 03-15-2009 02:03 PM

Also, Purdue does look pretty good. I don't think they're quite National Championship material, but definitely Elite 8.

The Genius 03-15-2009 11:19 PM

wisconsin vs florida state. i like wisconsin's chances, 12 upsets the 5 regularly in the tournament.

RoXer 03-15-2009 11:43 PM

HOW did Arizona get in?

The Genius 03-16-2009 01:03 AM

key away wins vs kansas, gonzaga? plus they had a 20 year ncaa tournamnet appearance streak didnt they?

in my bracket i have them going over #5 utah but losing in the second round.

SammyG 03-16-2009 02:30 AM

I dunno about them being Utah

I have Wisconsin too

Some of my other sleepers

VCU over UCLA
Western Kentucky over Illinois (although you'll saw what they did last year)
Arizona over Utah
USC over BC

I have Purdue and Marquette in the Sweet 16 and then they run into UCONN and Memphis

I also got Cuse over Oklahoma in the TPWW league. Syracuse are just looking like beasts right now and I love Johnny Flynn

Loose Cannon 03-19-2009 12:05 AM

Cannot wait for tomorrow though. so pumped

Nervous Ferret 03-19-2009 01:21 AM

Wouldn't be surprised if Clemson upset Oklahoma in the second round. They are much better than a 7 seed and I haven't been too impressed with OU all that much. And I hate Blake Griffin and his stupid diving into the crowd getting replayed on ESPN 984t485395843 times when he didn't even make the play. Also would not be surprised to see Clemson get embarrassed by Michigan tomorrow either. HOLLA

D Mac 03-19-2009 03:34 AM

Missouri Tigers

SammyG 03-19-2009 04:12 AM

Louisville NC final

NC Wins

Oliver Purnell cannot coach in the postseason. He couldn't at Dayton and he can't at Clemson.

Clemson seems to always play terrible in these big tourneys. Saying that, I had Michigan upsetting them last night, but changed it to Clemson winning this morning. dunno. tough call

The Mackem 03-19-2009 10:36 AM

What's the pull of college sports, is it because these guys are going to be the stars of tomorrow, that the games are really good or that you get to support your own state or something?

All three of those. And while the talent level may be lower than the professional leagues, the effort and passion are much, much higher. Collegiate sports are a lot purer than professional sports.

OssMan 03-19-2009 01:01 PM

BYU makes the tournament every year and never does anything.

Loose Cannon 03-19-2009 02:08 PM

LOL Memphis. This is going to fuck up so many brackets if Cal holds on

SammyG 03-19-2009 05:52 PM

I had Cal winning fuck

SammyG 03-19-2009 05:53 PM

oh nvm u are talking about cal state north or whatever. Nah i had memphis there.

Boondock Saint 03-19-2009 05:53 PM

7 for 7 so far.

SammyG 03-19-2009 06:36 PM

Fuck, had Miss.St going over Wash. in an upset.

Got VCU over UCLA too later.

OssMan 03-19-2009 06:38 PM

VCU

Loose Cannon 03-19-2009 07:12 PM

Clemson/Michigan now. the 1st game I'm not so sure about. like I said, Clemson doesn't show up in big tourney's.

SammyG 03-19-2009 07:16 PM

Go Michigan

Nervous Ferret 03-19-2009 08:19 PM

Clemson getting their arses kicked :-\

SammyG 03-20-2009 04:02 AM

BCWWF 03-20-2009 09:50 AM

I have Villanova in the finals. Don't let me down!

Loose Cannon 03-21-2009 06:59 PM

Yes sir

Loose Cannon 03-21-2009 07:28 PM

LSU is falling apart here

ClockShot 03-21-2009 07:40 PM

UCONN blew away A&M today. If Price and the rest of the team keep playing like that, we may have a chance against Memphis.

Loose Cannon 03-21-2009 07:41 PM

you went to UCONN? Or are you just from Conn?

ClockShot 03-21-2009 07:44 PM

From CT.

Loose Cannon 03-21-2009 10:33 PM

omg @ the Zags/WK ending.

And now I might of just seen Duke's Shyer make the most incredible out of bounds save ever

I dunno about all that but I DO think UCONN will be the 1st 1 seed K.O.'d.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-22-2009 10:15 AM

God dammit, the 3 games with Ohio schools are all on at the same time. Stupid assholes.

BCWWF 03-22-2009 10:13 PM

Just a little rant:

What is the point of ranking the college basketball teams? At the end of the season, the top four ranked teams were: Louisville, Memphis, North Carolina and Pittsburgh (both polls), yet Memphis was a two-seed and UConn (No. 5, 6) was a one-seed. Kansas was ranked 13 and 14, yet was a three-seed? Why even have the rankings if the selection committee just arbitrarily picks teams anyway?

Anyway, can anybody say Kimmie English? I can. Kimmie English.

BCWWF 03-22-2009 10:33 PM

Also, the other things on my mind:

Why does the NCAA even pretend like the brackets are geographically defined? They should just not try to name them.

It is stupid that CBS has exclusive rights to the game and the only way you can see all of the games in their entirety is to pay some exorbitant amount for the special package. Today the Mizzou game started at the exact same time as USC-Michigan State (which I think wasn't supposed to happen). So, being in Minnesota and having Michigan State (Big Ten) playing in Minneapolis, I could only watch the final one minute of the Mizzou game. It was kind of annoying.

OssMan 03-23-2009 12:42 AM

You know you can watch every single game for free online right? http://www.ncaasports.com/

SammyG 03-23-2009 01:36 AM

13 outta 16 teams predicted correctly.

Nothing really "jumps out" at me besides Xavier and Illinios. There's lots of factors to go into this like location/division/RPI so obviously there will be complaints no matter what bracket is picked.

But I felt the seeding was pretty fair this year So I dunno what to tell ya.

:-\

I'm not saying the seeding was unfair, per se. More that ranking the top 25 basketball teams seems arbitrary and insignificant if it doesn't have any bearing on the NCAA seedings.

RatedGSuperstar 03-23-2009 11:39 AM

My bracket for the first round or two was a mess, but at least I still have most of my contenders still alive. Most of the games I guessed wrong I had the teams losing in the second round anyway, but it doesn't help that I likely have most of the same picks as everyone else from here on out. My only chance now is Duke coming out of their bracket instead of Pitt, since everyone seems to love Pitt. I'm feeling a bit better about that pick after seeing Pitt struggle a bit the first two rounds and Duke getting past a tough match up against Texas.

Savio 03-23-2009 12:40 PM

I was so mad duke won....so mad.

Savio 03-23-2009 02:26 PM

I think it would be crazy if Louisville and Syracuse make it to the championship game....REMATCH!

Or even UConn/Syracuse. The rematch might go 13 overtimes.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-23-2009 07:07 PM

I hope to God Syracuse doesn't make the title game simply because Eric Devendorf is such a bitch. I would even root for Duke over Cuse in the Final Four if it came to that.

BCWWF 03-24-2009 10:09 AM

I went on a limb this year and picked Villanova. I'm sure they'll lose next round to Duke and it will be lame though.

BCWWF 03-24-2009 10:12 AM

This might just be me, but I feel like for years I was always aware of the big players on Duke, like they were well-known national guys from Jay Williams, Boozer, Dunleavy, Sheldon Williams and JJ Redick, but for the past couple of years I just haven't a clue who is on their team. Other then that random white guy they had, who I think was drafted last year.

RatedGSuperstar 03-25-2009 08:28 AM

Gerald Henderson is the guy who sucker punched Hansbrough last year. Greg Paulus was heavily recruited out of high school as both a point guard and quarterback, chose Duke because they would have let him play football if he wanted, and now he's sitting on the bench as Schuyer (sp?) lights it up.

Josh McRoberts was Duke's answer to Hansbrough -- they came in together in the same recruiting class, but I believe he turned pro after only a year or two, which really pissed off Coach K.

OssMan 03-25-2009 10:42 AM

Duke is starting to seem more and more of a joke like the Yankees do. Paulus is that guy who looks like a horse. Henderson is supposed to be black or something, I dunno. Don't even know who is on their team anymore. But all of them are still unbearable to look at.

RatedGSuperstar 03-25-2009 11:32 AM

As a general life philosophy, I hate everything that has to do with Duke. But I can't help but feel if they can get past Villanova, they'll be able to knock off Pitt and go to the Final Four. They don't do anything really well other than shoot threes, but like every other Coach K team they're extremely disciplined and well-coached.

I actually picked a UNC/Duke showdown in the Final Four in my bracket, basically because I want to see what that rivalry would be like with a National Championship appearance on the line. At least three guys are getting thrown out, they'll have to take a timeout to mop blood off the floor, and Roy Williams may order a hit on Coach K at halftime.

parkmania 03-25-2009 01:31 PM

Every time Duke plays UNC, I pray for the gym to explode, thereby erasing the two teams from existence.

Yes, there would be several thousand "innocent" casualties, but let's face it - it's still doing the world a favor by removing them from the genepool.

D Mac 03-25-2009 01:37 PM

Missouri can beat Memphis!

I hope.

DAMN iNATOR 03-26-2009 12:19 PM

UNC vs Duke is not even a real rivalry, it is just some unbelievably overblown bullshit by ESPN. I hate how UNC is always the "good guys" too, because they are also gigantic shitheads but since Duke is the most fucking disgusting team on the planet everyone sides with UNC.

parkmania 03-26-2009 09:48 PM

Pitt's got this nasty habit of playing down to the level of their competition - or at least the level Pitt BELIEVES them to be. That's why they had such bad losses this year, and why they're struggling in the tourney.

That said, GO PANTHERS!

D Mac 03-26-2009 10:03 PM
