Power Rangers/Super Sentai (US: Ninja Steel, JAP: Weird Shit Again)

Now before I relay the info, just know that I stopped watching PR regularly around the Turbo era - a long time ago. And since then I've kept up with what themes the seasons would employ as well as who the teams are as the years went on. I've caught episodes on and off but I couldn't follow a season (with me not really watching TV as I used to). So don't come in here with attacks about me killing myself over the cancellation of one of my favorite shows. Me and Noid established that PR definitely isn't what we grew up with. However, I must post this as it is/was still a major television convention (17 years ain't nothing to scoff at), and was an important part of my old viewing habits.

Link.

Power Rangers, which started out as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is essentially a Westernization of the Japanese Super Sentai series. We got wind of the long running series (ran since the 70's) and adapted it for American television in late '92 (though you can say '93, who cares). It wasn't a hard rule adaptation as we avoided changing the teams due to the original cast's popularity. Ironically, when the cast tried to pull rank on their popularity and demand fair wages for what they helped to produce (then the top kid's program), the studio suddenly had no problem changing cast members. And so we ended up with the Japanese system of yearly team changes anyway.

(Note that the during the Morphin' days when the Rangers received new Zords, that was when we imported the new Sentai team's weapons, just without their suits. In essence we flirted with rotating teams before the public knew it. The first major cast change with the Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers also revealed that kids would definitely get over it if the actors got out of line.)

Now I'd like to say Disney is at fault for letting it fall. I mean, the toys sell like hotcakes and the show still pulls average numbers (maybe not iCarly numbers). But since the studio was at the mercy of switching around what the Japanese were creating, there was always chance for issues to arise. For a time the Japanese studio would suit certain themes that did appeal to us (DinoThunder seemed like a remix of America's first PR show), but they didn't really have to. And it was only a matter of time before average ratings and Japanese alienation would team up against PR production.

This year's team, RPM, is a localization mess. The suits are butt ugly and the story is bad even for cheesy PR standards. This year's Sentai team has even worse appearance and totally unattractive features. I believe these factors made it much easier to call it quits.

Because of various legal gayness Power Rangers may never get proper DVD collections (these reasons are similar to why the Fox Kid's X-Men and Spider-Man are still wishlist fodder). So it's a bit sad to know that a series that had such a strong legacy would end on such a whimper.

I imagine this news won't affect many of us here, and I may get ribbed a bit, but I felt like sharing my thoughts on the matter. I really looked forward to the day I'd watch PR with my kid solely to troll him/her on how badass my era of Rangers were. Ah well. I imagine a return of some sort will occur down the line (Hollywood never deletes, they repackage), but for now it's the end of a near 20 year television mainstay.

How are you holding up? Are you okay?

CSL 03-15-2009 12:06 AM

Where is the black guy? And the asian bird? That red ranger doesn't look the same either

Juan 03-15-2009 12:11 AM

Those are the new Rangers from season 2 and 3

Savio 03-15-2009 12:13 AM

I liked the black ranger then the green because he was my fav color, stopped watching after the first season tho or...well around the time the green one was introduced.

I'm surprised they aren't keeping it going simply for the toy sales. It seems like the product nearly makes itself and turns out money.

It is possible that they can turn profits translating the Sentai series strictly as toys (Transformers did a similar thing when the 80's series stopped, and it fuckin saved the franchise in a way).

I imagine Disney really saw no growth in the product as a whole.

Sweet

Kalyx triaD 03-15-2009 12:52 AM

Holy shit, Diago that's some awesome news. But is it a complete collection? The term 'Volumes' usually misleads.

thedamndest 03-15-2009 02:59 AM

They (DC) did the Volumes thing with Batman TAS. It was complete, but I don't know about aired in order of air date. I think there were only like 80 episodes.

Ditto

It was one of the things I always tuned in for. I was sad when I heard that the girl that played Trini in series 1 was killed in a car crash.

Was it just me, or did Zack have a finger missing on one of his hands...can't remember if I dreamt this.

Remember watching this on fox kids UK followed by Big Bad Beetleborgs when i was 10/11

Juan 03-15-2009 03:10 AM

Yeah the black guy was missing a finger

thedamndest 03-15-2009 03:20 AM

I stopped after like the 3rd season. I knew that bringing in Jason David Frank a few years back meant that the show wasn't gonna last long.

mitchables 03-15-2009 10:21 AM

Alpha! Rita's escaped! Recruit a team of teenagers with ATTITUDES.

Flimsiest concept ever.

I suppose the fact that Transformers was a good seller before there was a cartoon has nothing to do with that.

I'm sure there are worse. For example, the 320 knockoffs of the show.

wow, wasn't even aware that it was still airing new episodes.

Kane Knight 03-15-2009 11:27 AM

BTW, google Power Rangers RPM. That shit looks terrible, as Kalyx said. Like Thomas The Tank Engine Sentai.

I wonder what they're gonna do when if that monster gets big and they realize none of their zords fit together.

TOTEM POLE COMBINATION.

Dark-Slicer Diago 03-15-2009 02:02 PM

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot when I stopped watching....but I still watch a few episodes every now and then. The fighting is pretty interesting to watch. I love wirework stuff...even if it is cheesy.

Lord-Of-Darkness 03-17-2009 09:53 AM

lol, the original Power Rangers Movie was on tv the other week. I watched it with my 3 year old. He loved it, even though he'd never seen it before.

Ivan Ooze FTW

You should really give RPM a chance. It is...well think Countdown to Desruction and then streach that over an entire season.

When you start off a show with PEOPLE DYING you know it'll be great.

Rammsteinmad 03-17-2009 02:34 PM

I stopped watching during Turbo coz it started to get a bit silly (and I was a bit older lol).

Has anyone seen Jason David Frank these days? The guys a fucking killing machine. He's got black belts in loadsa different styles and there's a couple of his fights online where he just annihilates people. Plus the short hair and all his tattoos gives a totally different image from what we saw of 'Tommy'. Total badass right there.

I cannot get past those suits. Knowing this is their last season, they might have something up their sleeve.

Yeah he's a legit badass. I wonder how odd it is to your ass kicked by the Green fucking Ranger.

Xerzes 03-18-2009 02:35 AM

I watched the first three or so seasons. I forget why I stopped. On a whim, I watched a recent run of it. Mystic Force. I've seen worse, but it was nothing great. Rita coming back in the last episode and helping the Rangers was weird.

Kalyx triaD 03-19-2009 11:17 PM

There's a Q&A session from some convention where Jason David Frank (Tommy) answers a shit load of questions. It was a pretty good panel. "Tommy" wants to fight "Jason" in real life because he heard he took up Muay Thai boxing as well. Great stuff about his time as Green Tommy up to DinoThunder Black Tommy. Good stuff.

Part 1, the rest you could find as links on the page.

Hornicane 03-20-2009 12:50 AM

I stopped watching after the Ninja Rangers thing. Or Zeo. Whichever was later.

One of my best childhood memories was going to a drive-in theatre, and the double feature was Mortal Kombat and the Power Rangers movie. Good times.

Juan 03-20-2009 12:54 AM

I never saw the Power Rangers movie at the theater, but I did watch Mortal Kombat about 4 times :$

Kalyx triaD 03-20-2009 12:59 AM

I saw Power Rangers in theaters. The crowd was fucking hype, singing the damn theme song and laughing at the silly mannerisms during the first fight scenes. It was a good time.

Hornicane 03-20-2009 01:09 AM

One of my friends actually got so excited that he shit himself. He ended up just leaving his boxers on the floor in the restroom.

I was 11 years old at the time. At that point, it was the funniest shit I had ever seen. Figuratively and literally.

El Vaquero de Infierno 03-20-2009 06:28 PM

I remember watching the first 2 seasons, from when Tommy turned from the green ranger to the white ranger, then after that i think became too old to watch such shite.

I really may get these.

Also, The complete Real Ghostbusters series is going to be released on dvd in two volumes in a few months.
They had just recently released it through Time-Life, but it was absurdly expensive and basically just a pain in the ass to order/wait for.
This new one is going to be in actual stores, and cheaper, and come in normal packaging.

Yeah definitely downloading a bunch of eps from seasons 1 and 2 due to this thread.

KayfabeMan 03-31-2009 09:28 PM

I just came back from Disney. I spent the better part of 3 total weeks there.

The Power Rangers were AMAZINGLY popular at Hollywood Studios.

It was unbelievable, as I didn't expect it to still be as popular, but it was. There were a ton of kids lined up to meet the 'Rangers', and there was a lot of Rangers merchandise being sold.

:(

Kalyx triaD 03-31-2009 09:37 PM

I never liked the pairing to begin with. Power Rangers and Disney? Really? Then the fuckers canned the shit? Fuck Disney.

I mean, Cartoon Network may have had a spot or some shit for it. At least til the 20th season or a proper send off.

Dark-Slicer Diago 03-31-2009 10:42 PM

I think that, a show like Power Rangers that's been popular for so many years deserves a proper send off.

You mean like one big clusterfuck episode where everyone who was ever a Ranger (and is still alive [:'( Thuy Trang]) gets a cameo? There'd be no time for an actual battle!

This thread caused me to watch a whole bunch of Jason David Frank aka Tommy the Green/White/Red/Black Ranger Q & A's from various conventions. Why does he hate him so much? I mean Jason was an over acting blow hard but that is no excuse.

There was this supposed rivalry because Tommy was a kiss-ass and Austin wanted moneys. Now they're both practitioners of Muay Thai and Tommy wants a piece of him IRL.

Totally legit. The Green Ranger was always my favourite. I had the dagger that played the summoning songs, back when I was a young'un. I loved that thing! :D

Jason could still wipe the floor with your ass.

The stock footage they used for the shows were usually filmed a year befoe they were used in the States. The original show is called Super Sentai in Japan and they were doing it since the 70's.

My favorite Megazord would have to be the Super Zeo Megazord. His finisher just looked fucking final, man. The DinoThunder Megazord was pretty cool in its simplicity, though.

Pics later, I guess.

Downloaded season 1, holy nostalgia trip. Still awesome.

Loved the one Q&A with JDF, the end of it the last question, the guy was like.. " what time is it" and he did the " It's morphin time" shit. Marked out at that.

Fuck I miss my childhood. :(

I remember when I was younger, my friend found it horribly racist that the black ranger was, well, a black guy. Dunno, he kinda never let it go.

I stopped after or during Turbo, I think. Was getting a bit old, and the quality was obviously dropping. Nothing will ever touch the series until they changed it over to Zeo, which I did also watch. It was something new, but even at a young age, nostalgia kicked in for the old uniforms and shit.

There has to be someone one day who misses the classic seasons enough to make a movie featuring the original Power Rangers concept. A bad-ass Power Rangers movie aimed at kids who grew up with it could be a mad idea, but good luck finding financial backing that won't want it toned down, cheesed up and marketed towards kid.

You basically detailed Disney.

Mr. Nerfect 04-08-2009 10:54 AM

Very true, sir.

What would have been next year's team before Disney canned PR. I will call them... Power Rangers TPdub. Revealing the roster later. :shifty:

I call pink.

Shadow 04-14-2009 12:18 AM

Hey Kalyx? It ain't canned yet. Though it ain't looking good.

Apperently it's doing real well with the older fans.

Kalyx triaD 04-14-2009 12:25 AM

It's the last season (by all reports). Been clear about it in the OP.
