I don't play that many video games anymore. I mostly bust out the old stuff when I do. The few games I've enjoyed in recent years are Shadow of the Colossus, Gears of War, Halo and a few others. I enjoyed them a lot, but I didn't rank them above my childhood favs.
There are a few others that I didn't include, but they're mostly Marios and Zeldas.

Also, I know the last one I listed came out yesterday. I don't care. I beat it already and it's the most fun I've had playing a video game since I was a kid.

It's a valid point. There are some RPG's that because of their bullshit leveling system or some other huge detail, just renders a game completely broken and/or unplayable. Note that this is not the case with most RPG's but still it is something that I wish more RPG game makers would adress.

I know I'm gonna catch hell for saying this, but shit like Final Fantasy. The visuals are awesome but the gameplay is like watching paint dry.

A lot of strategy games fall under the same category, but a lot of people like those as well.

IE - Civ IV is one of the greatest games ever, but it is turn-based. I get what you're saying, but I don't see why those games shouldn't 'count' just because you don't like them.

Leveling a character to beat "X" boss will be in RPGs until the Sun explodes. People should get over it.

I guess you didn't see how many people have Final Fantasy 7 on their lists here. It's more strategy and puzzle solving than anything, centered around an immense storyline. On top of that, you can play for HOURS. I dunno, if you don't like it, that's fine, but there's no reason to shit all over it here. It's an exercise in futility.

Personally, FF8 > FF7. Better everything.

While I don't like the FF series, one of the greatest games of all time was somewhat turn-based, and that is Chrono Trigger.
