Hey what do you know, I do kinda like them.
|
Their whole album is amazing 'Why there are mountains'. And the Hazy Sea is a really good song.
Japandroids are a similiar band that you may enjoy. |
I'm downloading it right now
|
I got bored at 1:07 (ok I was bored before that, but I thought I'd give them a chance)
|
That's the thing about nonmainstream music, it requires patience, and the music changes around and grows. All people want is soloing or bullshit they can sing to with heavy bass. ugh.
|
Could just be it's a bit shit
|
these guys are so much slicker than japandroids. big fan.

I get the feeling you like music based on it being 'nonmainstream'
Which makes you the sort of elitest tool I have spent so long not being. Clox this is, not KK. |
A pile of crap by the way. Shit vocals, pointless american lyrics, boring music. An insult to some of the creative things going on in modern music and recording.
I have the same mini korg as the keyboard player. A redeeming factor. |
i love radiohead, white stripes, even fucking justin timberlake, so take your feelings and shove them up your ass.
"I"VE SPENT SO LONG TRYING NOT TO BE AN ELITIST." STFU |
Radiohead have some of biggest fucking 'elitist' fans around
|

But hey, thats the thing with super-cool non-mainstream music right? It is for people who go 'ugh' to popular notions like catchy melody, driving rhythm, pleasant sounding lyrics by a talented vocalist. Ugh, eh? The opposite of all them characteristics people like? This toss. Music is subjective, and you discussed it like a fashion statement. So fuck you. |
Dude i waqs talking about the fact that that one fucking dude only listened to 1:01 second of it or whatever. I find mainstream music to be more miss than hit, and indie music to have the better artists.
Like what you want, but if you aren't going to listen to a full song don't bash it. that's all iw as saying |
So how long do I listen to Boom Boom Pow before I can turn round and justifiably declare that it is an insult to people who have ears?
Sometimes a spade is a spade, no matter how long you stare at it. |
lol "pointless american lyrics"
|
It's a song called 'Wind Phoenix'
Oozing with substance. |
I just listened to the whole thing - it's still shit.
|
I don't like this version nearly as much as the album version, btw.
I don't think cymbals eat guitars need as much patience as say Dirty Projecters, but I also don't think the reward is nearly as great. |
honestly i don't know why there is always this debate over what is good and what isn't. you like what you like and you don't like what you don't. get over it. everybody. no use arguing the point. not going to change anyone's opinion of what is good. it's not like anyone in here is claiming that this music is revolutionary and changing the landscape. at least i don't think that they are.
|
No. This is just an album I like this year, that has screaming in it and is fairly accessible.
The only thing i said was that most indie music takes more patience than most mainstream music, this is the point of arguement, I think... I am used to getting bitched at at tpww by ramndom dicks so i don't even know what part of my conversation I'm defending most of the time |
meh i dont' think it's a matter of patience. i never had to try to take time to "get" indie (although i'm not sure it's a matter of "getting" it). i just did. i imagine a lot of people don't like the sound just like i don't like the sound of some other types of music. but whatever. i don't hate on it. it's just different tastes. and i'm not talking about you hating here, clox. just in general.
|
The thing about indie though, is it isn't a genre, it's a spin off of all that DIY Punk stuff, but it's like every genre you'd hear on the radio, without the rules of no songs longer than 4 minutes, you need to be able to know that it's the same song for the most part, it needs to have verse chorus verse, etc.
you know what I'm saying? |
yes but again if you don't like any amount of tyring to "get" it isn't going to work. i don't think that music works like that. i go based on my gut. if i like it off the bat i like it. if i don't i don't. i might like one song and not another but i think you're making too much out the whole thing. some people like verse chorus verse 4 minutes. some don't. some like both. whatever.
|
i don't feel like i'm saying anything that i want to properly.
|
I'm just saying transitioning from only listenig to garth brooks blink 182 and aerosmith (like i did) it wasn't that i didn't like the music, it's that htere was so much going on that I wasn't ready for it.
I first heard Pavement, for instance, in HS. Same with Flaming lips, I liked these bands, they sounded interesting, but when I listened past their singles i couldn't get into them. Then i started listening to bright eyes and belle and sebastian, who were two pretty interesting bands that were highly accesible and yet drastically different from most music on the radio. It was a slow transition for me. It wasn't untill i found music blogs and stuff that i really branched off from liking and really knowing the catalogue of like 16 bands to what i do now, which is listen to so many genres. Another difference between indie and mainstream is the fact that most mainstream albums, not all, but most, stick to one genre their entire career, their first album and their next album are consistent. Indie bands tend to change stylistically not just album to album, but at time song to song, or in the case of some bands such as Girl Talk, in each song. |
you're basically just listing off the reasons why some people would not like it and it's not a matter of getting used to it.
|
Well that's all it took for me, was getting an ear for it. I think that indie just ahs so much to offer that saying " I don't like indie." is similiar to saying " I don't like Paintings" there's such a wide variety that differs so greatly from group to group, that you really have to judge on a band by band basis
|
i challenge you to find one indie band that downunder would listen to
|
Does Indie Metal count?
What does downunder like? |
Isis, High on Fire, Mastadon, Absu?
|
judas priest is my guideline for downunder. i'm gonna guess none of those bands will get over with him.
|
Cut Copy was number 2 on the australian charts. they're indie
|
Those are all pretty dark indie metal.
Was The Darkness indie? What modern bands does he like? If it's nickelback and creed then I have nothign i can do for him. |
you'll have to ask him. i just know he likes judas priest. and probably ac/dc.
|
and no the darkness was not indie. come on.
|
lol the Darkness were awesome.
btw Sunn O is one of metacritics highest rated bands this year. They take patience. As does wWilliam Basinski, Orthrelm, Liars. If only because of hte length of their songs and the less than frequent chrod changes. I just don't see someone who wasn't exposed to this stuff as a kid picking up Lindstrom's new album and going "hmm a 3 song album that clocks in at almost 70 minutes.. that sounds like something I'd be into." |
sunn o sucks really really hard. no amount of patience makes them good.
|
i should qualify that with "in my opinion" i suppose
|
Yeah, because in the opinion of a bunch of music writesrs, they are teh shit.
I can see how a lot of people don't like them, but I think it's rewarding experience that just takes an assload of time and or Pot to get used to. It's background music. |
music writers mean jack, though. they only provide me wiht a means of discovering music. don't care what they think about it.
and as a consistent smoker getting high makes sunn o almost unbearable. can't imagine just zoning out to that. would kill my high. |
I dunno. This is where we differ I suppose. We like mostly the same bands though.
|
yeah i'm not arguing that i dont' agree to a certain extent. i just think that some people wont' ever like it and you think that they will. no big deal really. i don't care that much one way or the other. despite the amount of words i've spent talking about it now.
|
LOL yeah, I agree that some people won't ever like any music that isn't over 20 years old, or metal or whatever. But i think some people will always be republicans and racists and stupid as well. I'm just more a of an optimist that hoppefully at least some people will come ot their god damn senses and give INDIE A CHANCE!!!
/tic ;) |

Just a shortened version of whatever you guys are talking about :y: |
I like The Flaming Lips
Just thought I'd throw that out there. |
:) I could find you some indie you'd like then.
Thank you for giving the song a chance, that's all i wanted. |
Just for the record Clox, I don't have a "type" of music.
I don't want to listen to "indie" just because it is "indie", if I hear something and I like it I will listen to it, reguardless of the genre. |

But he's NOT AN ELITIST LOL Quote:
Speaking of which, there's very little in that song that really counts as "non-mainstream." I mean, I suppose you can call the shitty way the vocalist sings "artistic," but that's kind of...Dumb. If you polished it slightly, and replaced the vocals with something that wasn't "shite for the sake of shite," that would be like any non-mainstream mainstream track that's been in heavy rotation in the last five years. Also, in Nunder's defense, there's little later in the song that merits listening beyond a minute or so. On the other hand, I love KEXP's "music that matters" Podcast. Not every song is a winner, but they have a shitload of good music on there. Quote:
Right Nunder? ;) |
tbh i listened to shit back when i said that about you. I don't have the same feelings any more, I didn't really know what I was talking about. I was young and dumb.

Indifferent Clox, why don't you just post a link to www.pitchforkmedia.com and tell everyone your favourite album is whatever they have given a good write up.
|
That was well over a year ago you dumbass. It was before i went to bonnaroo last year for usre, and pretty sure it was well before that. If you ever got outside to see the days change you might get a better concept of the passing of time.
