The Expendables

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320253/

Holy shit, check out this cast:

Sylvester Stallone ... Barney Ross
Jason Statham ... Lee Christmas
Jet Li ... Bao Thao
Dolph Lundgren ... Gunnar Jensen
Eric Roberts ... Monroe
Randy Couture ... Toll Road
Steve Austin ... Dan Paine
David Zayas ... General Garza
Giselle Itié ... Sandra
Terry Crews ... Hale Caesar
Mickey Rourke ... Tool

other cast:

Bruce Willis ... Mr. Church (rumored)
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Brittany Murphy

A team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.

Cool King 08-22-2009 08:23 AM

Yeah, knew about the film for a while now. It sounds pretty sweet.

Apparently, Forest Whitaker was originally cast to play the role of Hale Caesar, but then 50 Cent replaced him, then Terry Crews replaced "Fiddy"....thankfully.

50 Cent is just terrible.

thedamndest 08-22-2009 12:10 PM

Bruce Willis has commented that he's supposed to do only one scene in the movie but it's with Arnold and Sly at the same time. They just need to get it set up.

D Mac 08-22-2009 02:18 PM

That's gonna be a fucking big mark out moment. :D

Jeritron 08-22-2009 03:45 PM

Van Dam should be involved

wow holy fuck

D Mac 08-22-2009 10:09 PM

I hope Mickey Rourke is the villain. He plays a cool bad guy.

D Mac 08-22-2009 10:09 PM

Also, lol at the name Lee Christmas.

Funky Fly 08-24-2009 04:28 AM

I'm probably gonna enjoy this movie, and I think it would rock my world when I was 7.

despite the starpower, the trailer makes it seem cheap and generic.

i heard they asked both him and seagall but they hate each other so neither did it.

the backstory sounded quite fun too :'( something to do with JCVD kicking seagall into a pool after seagall offered him out :'(

McLegend 10-18-2009 05:54 PM

Well according to imdb Van Dam declined because he though his character had "no substance."

That's pretty lame.

Jura 10-18-2009 06:51 PM

I don't know. Most of the characters he plays has this story to them. I think he wanted a character with a deep history or story and not just some guy who kicks ass.

Which one of his characters had a deep history?

Seriously, he always played a European guy that didn't want to fight, but had to fight, blah blah blah.

Jura 10-18-2009 08:14 PM

Replicant is a really good example. Then there's a recent one but can't remember the name. Then another where he was a crooked cop. Forget the name of that too.

Holy cow. Now THAT is an action movie. Daaang......finally, a violent film without Hollywood pretty boys that look like they belong on MTV!

Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, and appearances by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.....all in one freakin' movie. I tell ya, if they could have gotten Kurt Russell to be in this film too, the cast of all my boyhood action heroes would have been complete.

Chuck Norris is needed as well! I read that Van Damme was offered a cameo spot, but it did not work out. I would have loved to have seen a Patrick Swayze cameo too. (No matter what the chicks may think, one of Swayze's first two biggest hits was The Outsiders and Red Dawn, which are guy movies, so he belonged to the guy genre of films first.)

DaveBrawl 01-19-2010 11:08 AM

I thought Dolph only got in movies that starred Van Damme at this point.

The Jayman 01-19-2010 11:10 AM

so it's agreed. this movie needs more Norris, Van Damme, and Seagal

DaveBrawl 01-19-2010 11:13 AM

I think that about every movie. Imagine how great the Color Purple could of been with Van Damme spin kicking Danny Glover. Under Seige without Seagal is just Titanic. The Delta Force without Chuck Norris...why that's just a National Geographic documentary on Lebanon.

The Jayman 01-19-2010 11:25 AM

Every movie needs a sprinkle of these guys

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-02-2010 01:24 PM

This probably would have kicked arse 20 years ago.

Kalyx triaD 08-02-2010 01:28 PM

DAMNi, you do this habitually. You should really look into searching first.

Jeritron 08-02-2010 02:14 PM

I feel like this looks a bit bland. It could just be the trailers, but it seems to take itself way too seriously. It should be a total over the top cheese-fest for what it is.

Also, it's a bit disappointing that Arnold and Bruce are only cameos. It's cool that they share the screen finally, but 10-15 years ago it could have been bigger, and involved them more. Especially since I was never the biggest Stallone mark. Especially compared to the other two, or even Van Damme.

And what's with some of the choices? I realize they couldn't get everyone they wanted probably, but I don't see how Terry Crews, Couture and even Stone Cold fit into this. They are "tough guys" I guess, but have next to no action movie background between them.
They feel like fill ins for Van Damme, Seagal and Chuck Norris and/or Wesley Snipes.

Finally, I can't stand Jason Statham, but I guess he's the modern contribution to this.

Basically I dislike half the lineup, wish Arnold and Bruce Willis were actually major players, and miss the glaring omissions.

That concludes my over-analysis of a simple action movie. I will see it anyways

D Mac 08-02-2010 03:26 PM

Statham rules.

Jon Kano 08-02-2010 03:32 PM

All these people saying it would rule 20 years ago, why is this? because they were younger?

20 years ago these guys didn't have all their roles and hits under their belt, it wouldn't mean as much as it does now. I feel as though this could be the beginning of the end with regard to an era of action movies and the stars that made them. It's like one of the few goodbyes and last adventures we may see these people do. Obviously I'm talking about the older guys.

JCVD and Segal should've been in this.

Kurt Russell can fuck off and try and re-take his crown from Gerard Butler in the new Escape From New York than star in this.

Jeritron 08-02-2010 03:41 PM

Not because they were younger, but because they were "in their prime" and action movies were made differently for the most part.

Also, I can assure you that a movie with Stallone and Arnold in it would mean way more 20 years ago than it does now.
They're both kind of relics now. That doesn't mean they've been forgotten, but they're not the box office and pop culture icons they were in the late 80s and early 90s.

Jon Kano 08-02-2010 03:44 PM

OK yeah sure they were in their prime, but 20 years ago, technology, equipment and general stunt practices were in some ways tamer and less entertaining than some now, so it depends really with that.

And yes, I agree, it would mean more in terms of box office potential, and what they could actually do on screen, but hell - at least it's come to this where they got who they can to be part of it and do something rather than nothing.

Jeritron 08-02-2010 03:44 PM

I'd be lying if I said the Anrold/Stallone/Bruce Willis meeting isn't the main reason I will go see this, even if it's only for one scene.
Hopefully there's a bit more to it and one of them ends up the villain or something. I doubt it though

Jon Kano 08-02-2010 03:46 PM

I know I'm kinda hating the fact that what we see in the trailer is all it's going to be, but then there could be more. Maybe. Possibly. Hopefully.

Don't get me wrong. It's still a great concept and should be fun. I'm just voicing some thoughts on how it may have been in the prime of the era it is cashing in on.
Either way I really don't care when it's made though. It could be made in the 90s or now, it's the absence of JCVD and Seagal and the small involvement of Arnold/Bruce that I was nitpicking.
All of them having a bigger role instead of some of the filler in this would make it that much more amazing.
As I said though, I will still see it and I'm really just nitpicking it for the sake of discussion.

Jeritron 08-02-2010 04:10 PM

I wouldn't be suprised if we saw Expendables 2: Now With More Arnold and JCVD if this does well.

Arnold is leaving office and supposedly going back into acting in the winter. I wonder what his first role will be.
I was hoping he would make time for a cameo in Predators

Jeritron 08-02-2010 04:15 PM

Just read that Terry Crews' role was originally written for Wesley Snipes. Fuckin taxes.

Droford 08-13-2010 03:51 AM

I might go monday since I work all weekend.

Im almost looking forward to Machete more though..that comes out in 3 weeks.

Quote:

Robert Rodriguez's upcoming film Machete, starring Danny Trejo and based on the fake trailer of the same title from Robert's 2007 collaboration Grindhouse, with Quentin Tarantino, will now see the best friends teaming up once again to deliver the retro goods according to a rumour. Sometime this month, Tarantino will apparently film a fake trailer to precede Machete, titled Agent Orange.

Our source indicates that it will be set in 1975 and will feature Tim Roth as Agent Ringo Orange, a British soldier who wants to restart the Vietnam war. Roth will share the screen in the trailer with Rick Yune, who will play Li Chan, Orange's South Vietnamese sidekick. It will also star Sacha Baron Cohen as Colonel Weathers, and Stacy Keach as Doc Franklin, the rumoured antagonist.
They need to stop doing fake trailers for movies that Id actually want to see.

Jeritron 08-13-2010 04:11 PM

They should keep the fake trailers coming. I am excited for Machete but I do wish that it was Grindhouse 2, with another film and a bunch of fake trailers.

I understand that will never happen again though, because the length really hurt the movie at the box office. That and the fact that lots of people didn't "get it."

Expendables with the whole family

The Fugitive 08-14-2010 07:24 AM

I would have laughed at that, but when I saw it tonight with my brother and SIL, someone did go there with their whole family. 7 year old was the youngest, I think. Even with all the violence, I didn't hear a single scream or cry. I don't know whether to be amused or disgusted.

Good mindless action film though. A bit too violent for my liking... but I'll watch it again.

Stallone even said it, and it's true. This movie is a tribute to 80's action movies and is really only for action fans. Fuck plot and everything. That being said.....I'm still in awe of seeing it and I went into a state of shock like 8 or 9 times throughout.

There was a little dragging in the first 20 minutes but after that its a nonstop action ride...

Only thing that kinda took away from the movie for me was the bad CGI in some scenes...but all the awesome action sequences make up for it.

Loved that they gave Statham a Transporterlike fight on the basketball court.

Oh yea...I was thinking the same thing during that fight....

I was actually expecting the movie to be Stallone with everyone else carrying the background...I really wasnt expecting Statham to actually be a main focus other than Stallone...Great role for him...

All the stars were great...Couture seemed to me as the only person who didnt really fit in.

So who plays who?

I mean, who plays good guys, who plays bad guys?

Heard Stone Cold is a villain and I'd guess Mcikey Rourke, too?

Verbose Minch 08-16-2010 04:54 AM

Stone Cold is bad, Rourke is good.

D Mac 08-16-2010 05:23 AM

Dolph Lundgren
SPOILER: show
starts out good, then bad, then good again.

so..they're gonna do a sequel

Maybe they'll get Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal and JCVD

Swiss Ultimate 08-16-2010 08:15 PM

I'm going to get flak for this but, not only is Chuck Norris too old for this but, he's way too Christian to do it.

PorkSoda 08-16-2010 08:59 PM

Chuck Norris is 68. Stallone is (NINTENDOOOO) 64. Van Damme is 50. Useless information.
