1995 King of the Deathmatch DVD Review
 

I bought the DVD a few years ago, it was "produced" by Barb Wire Entertainment and is region free.

11 Matches in all, no commentary (which is fine since I don't want to listen to ICP or the Japanese announcers) and is pretty good visually.

I originally got tricked into buying a different king of the deathmatch DVD which turned out not to be several different matches that had nothing to do with this night.

For Foley fans this is a must-buy. Just reading about it isn't enough to truly understand what went on that night. As for casual wrestling fans and people who don't enjoy blood, this is definitely not for you.

I give the entire show a 4/5 for the sheer shock and awe of the main event in addition to the fact that this event helped create Foley as the "Hardcore Legend". The Main Event is unintentionally poetic and the Cactus Jack and Terry Funk promos are priceless (probably better than the wrestling in these matches.) I figure that since Foley only ever got a $300 payday for his work we could at least appreciate it for what it was. Two men sacrificing their bodies for the entertainment of the audience.

In the Foley's book he talks about how the end of the match was supposed to be much more climactic. Terry gets up and pushes the ladder over sending Cactus into the barbwire then collapses, Cactus crawls over and covers the Terry for the win.

The crowd was confused. It wasn't supposed to happen that way.

But, I think it was actually the best finish that Foley and Funk ever had with eachother. Terry Funk's last offense turned out to be his own finisher. This match was sort of Terry Funk passing the torch to one of his best friends.

In reality though, both men were so exhausted from the entire day of wrestling and unhealthy amount of blood loss that this was the only way they could end the match.

I was a huge wrestling nerd in my teens during the 90s, I was obsessed with Foley and ECW.

I decided to start posting here after making friends on Justin.tv with Juan, Xero, Irod and a bunch of other really cool people. If you ever pop into the chat I'm "robisrad".

This thread confuses me. DeathtotheSwiss comes across as relatively eloquent. Yet, he likes deathmatches. This flies in the face of all other deathmatch fans I've ever seen in this - or any other - forum. He can form complete sentences and defend himself from criticism with wit (although references to '90s Webiquette are cliched at this point), yet... he acknowledges that enjoying the ICP on commentary is "fair enough?"

It's very interesting to have someone on the boards who actually can write well about a subject that is almost universally loathed on this board. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be another Sadistic. I llike reading threads that don't make me want to stab myself in the brain.

I honestly no longer enjoy deathmatch wrestling. I think it was more of a phase than anything. I hate CZW and light-tube matches for instance, but I still enjoy the matches I initially enjoyed when I was younger.

To me, hardcore is only as good as the guys in the ring. The only barbwire matches that I can watch and enjoy now are the ones between Foley and Funk and Sabu VS. Terry Funk at Born to be Wired. Good storytelling, in my opinion. I'm no Necrobutcher fan.

I can't promise that you'll like everything I have to say but, I'm too old and too responsible to act like a douchebag on the internet.

Honestly, if it's not fmw or ecw, then it's not worth watching. Big Japan has a couple of guys that know how to do it properly, but that's it.
