FLCL is amazing, but I'm sure you already know that. Trigun is pretty good, and I've heard they are making a movie soon.

Besides the ones on your list though, I would suggest Spirited Away. Pretty good anime film, with some interesting characters.

I think shin chan and and haruhi chan are very similiar

i've read a lot of death note, but not seen almost any of the anime

3x3 Eyes was decent (if memory serves me well), Gankutsuou is pretty awesome (Count of Monte Cristo) it has pretty wicked animation, Bubblegum crisis is pretty good as well...

Yeah I have to say I enjoyed Spirited Away very much so I'll check out those two you suggested. Also read a summary of Death Note and it sounds like it could be really good.

After posting this then going back up to watch that youtube video that thecc posted, I smacked myself. Use to watch Shin Chan whenever I could catch an episode when it was playing on Adult Swim. Hilarious stuff. (Off to find a torrent)

Vampire Hunter D movies are good. As is Grrave of the Fireflies, but mad depressing.

Elfen Lied is good but really fucked up.

This is true, the thing I find with Anime is theres so much within every genre there's practically something that should appeal to everyone. You do get the popular Shounen shows like DBZ, Naruto or Bleach but if you delve further you can find some real gems.

Yeah, def. a market that has something for everyone. however, if you can't get over the past that it's animated and originally in japanese then you won't really have any fun with it.

I used to have samurai chammploo, but it was a reallybad quality import. the translation was shit for the subtitles.

The English dub is pretty awesome though. I don't know why people prefer japanese voices with English subs when the main character who is male is usually voiced by a japanese woman.

my ver. didn't have an english dub just engish subs. Very horrible english subs.

I know most anime fans don't really consider it "true anime" but I've always loved Robotech.

And if you want to see horrible translations, track down the Transformers series Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory. They take place right after the 4th season of what we saw in America, but were never released here. The dubs sound like there was at most 3 different voice actors for the entire cast. Cybertron is spoken as "Cyber-tawn" (no second r), Rodimus Prime is pronounced "Roadimus", and Blaster is called "Billy" for the first half of the run.

Oh fuck forgot about Gurran lagaan. Gainax is fucking immense at making quality anime.

It depends. Stuff like Bebop and Champloo is perfectly fine. But in stuff like Naruto, there are so many tacky, cringeworthy lines added in that it becomes better in Japanese. Also, the voice acting isn't quite on the same level either. Even tho I can't understand japanese, you can tell there is way more emotion going into the VA, whereas in the dub, it can sound stiff as a board at times.

....what "true anime" fan says that? Robotech is anime.

I've heard lots of people bash Carl Macek for bastardizing the three originally unrelated series (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada) to make the story.

Those guys are Otakus and Japanese purists. Robotech is a good anime and shows what you can do when you use some creativity and actually get some good footage to splice together.

I've always enjoyed Robotech, evene when it jumps into something compleatly unrelated cept for the dubbing and splicing.

I thought the Devil May Cry anime was pretty good.
I don't know if anyone has ever even heard of Eatman? that is one weird ass anime. There is 2, Eatman and Eatman 98. Apparently, Eatman was not close enough to the source material so people were pissed. Eatman 98 was released to shut them up since it's suppose to be true to the source. Explaining the show is hard as it is..The guy is a mercenary who can pretty much eat metal and turn it into whatever the hell he wants later.
Anyways, I don't even know if Eatman has even been subtitled in English before or dubbed. I use to watch Eatman when I lived in Italy.
