Who Did It Better?: The Sharpshooter

Thought I'd give this a try. Kinda like what the n00b did, but better. In this debate you select who was able to do the move best. This week we have the sharpshooter. Although Bret Hart is most commonly associated with the move, Sting and Ronnie Garvin actually used the move first.

Here we go.

Bret Hart

Zen v.W.o. 09-25-2009 06:23 PM

Bret, for multiple reasons.

His looked the most painful, he could slap it on from a variety of different positions, and sometimes as a beautiful counter.

Owen was second. Yet he isn't on the list.

Triple Naitch 09-25-2009 06:23 PM

Good thinking. I'll edit it.

James Steele 09-25-2009 06:24 PM

Bret Hart...duh. Everybody else does some limp-dick version of the Sharpshooter.

ttetf 09-25-2009 06:24 PM

Owen Hart's was best

Corporate CockSnogger 09-25-2009 06:27 PM

Shawn Michaels

Triple Naitch 09-25-2009 06:27 PM

I'll accept Owen as a write in vote.

Swiss Ultimate 09-25-2009 06:43 PM

Bret's Sharpshooter was just technically perfect. It helps that his psychology with the hold worked so well too.

Triple Naitch 09-25-2009 06:43 PM

I wonder what StingerSplash4Lyfe has to say about this.

Juan 09-25-2009 06:43 PM

Bret "Hitman" Hart

blake639raw 09-25-2009 06:48 PM

Bret Hart for sure.

Nicky Fives 09-25-2009 06:50 PM

Owen Hart did it best..... Bret a close number 2 and I always liked Edge's modified version of it

The Show Off 09-25-2009 06:52 PM

Bret Hart. His version of the Sharpshooter looked the most painful of anyones...

And here is the order of best to worst after Bret Hart who should be undisputed number 1...

Chris Benoit
Owen Hart
Edge
Natalya
The Rock

You might be wondering why Sting isn't on my list, we'll that's easy...

STING NEVER DID THE SHARPSHOOTER!

His move was the Scorpion Death Lock. I grew up calling that move the Scorpion Death Lock because I saw Sting do it first (though between the two of them I thin Bret did it first).

But in my opinion

Scorpion Death Lock > Sharpshooter

...honorable mention goes to Kevin Steen for his version of the Sharpshooter.

Pat Patterson suggested Bret use the Scorpion Death Lock, Konnan taught Bret how to do it and Bret came up with the name 'Sharpshooter'

So you're saying Sting did it first? Cause this is something that I've always wondered in the back of my mind.

CSL 09-25-2009 07:09 PM

Sting did it before Bret Hart, yes. One of the older jap guys (Onita, Choshu or somebody like that) invented it

Zen v.W.o. 09-25-2009 07:10 PM

I never liked the way Benoit did it. Looked as awkward as Austin's version.

Yeah I knew it came from Japan.

...well that settles and argument from 4th grade. Unfortunatlly, I haven't seen the kid that I got into the argument with since 5th grade.

The Mask 09-25-2009 07:21 PM

the rock

What Would Kevin Do? 09-25-2009 07:23 PM

Riki Choshu created it I believe... Or at least he made it popular.

And Bret does it best.

redoneja 09-25-2009 07:33 PM

Yea it was Riki Choshu that created the move.

TheHaunted 09-25-2009 07:34 PM

Bret Hart for sure. Owen is a close 2nd

thedamndest 09-25-2009 07:41 PM

Stu Hart invented it in the Dungeon :(

Theo Dious 09-25-2009 07:45 PM

Incidentally, why is Shawn Michaels not on this list? He DID win a WWF title with it...

As an aside, I've always been convinced that a) at least one Hart child was conceived in the dungeon, and b) I'd imagine Stu Hart to be absolutely frightening in bed, so either Helen liked it rough or he was just really hung...

I always liked when the rock did the leg flick thing as he went for the sharpshooter

Triple Naitch 09-25-2009 08:21 PM

Pretty sure Zen vWo made that video.

All those are closer to Sting's Scorpion Deathlock than they are to Bret's Sharpshooter.

I'd blame Hulk Hogan for how bad Shawn Michaels' Sharpshooter is, his legs are just so damn stiff. That and since when is Shawn Michaels ever called "The Amazing" Shawn Michaels, what is he a fucking magician? I know the creator of the video is being sarcastic and is actually making a dig at HBK but why would he put amazing in quotes, and not Showstopper or something.

abec 09-25-2009 09:49 PM

This answers easy, whenever I see ANYONE do a sharpshooter, I instantly think Hart.

Also Owen did it the best, even better than his brother.

Loose Cannon

Vastardikai 09-25-2009 10:19 PM

Bret, Owen, Sting

In that order.

The MAC 09-26-2009 02:37 AM

Bret says in his book that sting was using the move long before him . Rock and sting(these days) dont even sit on the opponent. Bret used to sit right back and it look like he was about to break the opponents back. Oh, look at that shawn oic on the previous page- he looks like a fag.

Rammsteinmad 09-26-2009 03:34 AM

Bret Hart.

I've always liked this move more as the 'Scorpion Death Lock', but Bret's execution of it was beautiful.

The Rock's on the other hand, was awful. :nono:

Mogadishu 09-26-2009 03:38 AM

Bret...followed closely by his late great brother Owen. After those two, there is a mile gap between whoever is #3.

Austin and Benoit, as someone already pointed out, made the sharpshooter look less legitimate when they executed it. Although I am a huge mark for The Rock, my opinion of his version of the sharpshooter is the same as my opinion of his version of the Stunner; goofy.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-26-2009 02:14 PM

Thank you. Not only does Hogan have stiff and thick legs to begin with, in recent years he hasn't been known for being the most cooperative fellow. The Sharpshooter he put on Benoit at the Backlash following WM20 was much better done.

You're asking for sense from a drooling Hart mark?

JT 09-26-2009 03:47 PM

I forgot who said this (it was someone from here a few years back), but my favorite description of The Rock doing the Sharpshooter was, "It looks like he's taking a crap in the woods."

Kami Raki 09-26-2009 06:51 PM

Bret. But Konnan taught him how to apply it so....

Loose Cannon 09-26-2009 07:04 PM

I don't understand how you fuck up that move. it's very easy to apply to someone. I guess maybe because Rock was a bit taller, it was harder for him.

Favre4Ever 09-26-2009 07:18 PM

The best thing about the Rock's Sharpshooter was the bowel movement face.

Jura 09-27-2009 01:07 AM

Should really be Which Do You Like Better? Bret's Sharpshooter or Sting's Scorpion Deathlock. Owen, Sting and Benoit's look really similar if not exactly the same. They are different height and build so there maybe be little differences. The other versions are an abomination.

The Rock's version is always worth a  but also seems to have occurred around same time WWE began pushing away from submissions as legit match enders and more as a regular move or easily broken.

Bret is the only one in danger doing the post figure-four. The guy taking it has to hold the 'givers' foot for it to 1. Work and 2. Stop him from having his bodyweight fall on his neck

Yeah its from a video game but based on a real life move Bret did a few times. Didn't mean to imply that was a sharpshooter but more of how amazing it was Bret never accidentally harmed anyone with it.
