Bret had tremendous technical ability. But HBK has everything. Michaels without a doubt for me.

HBK remained popular in the WWE throughout the Attitude Era he was not a part of.

Bret for me. I think until that final day for Vince, he was the model professional in all departments regarding the business. He was the perfect blend of old school and new school.

HBK is great, but I personally think he is terrible at the emotive stuff he's done, his whole persona is supposed to resemble a parallel to his real life, but he just overacts every facial expression. I think he is one of the worst 'sellers' to have achieved his kind of success.... He has had, and still does have amazing matches, but he isn't as often the ring genius he is made out to be.

Shawn Michaels. As good as Bret Hart was, Shawn was better at everything except for submission holds. Way more versatile, better on the mic, relevant for longer, and just out right way more entertaining.

From what I've seen/read of both, I like Bret as a person more than I do Shawn. In ring, I'd give the edge to HBK, though he isn't a better technician then Bret, and he has a bad habbit of over-selling.

On the mic, he's also better. He's far from the best, but is still better than Bret. The poll deserves to be closer than it is, but HBK wins it for me.

Bret, but I am not one of those haters of Shawn. Shawn and Bret are just as good as each other. When I started watching wrestling, Bret Hart was the main guy and I became a huge fan of him, that is why I voted for him.

Shawn has a much more extensive body of work and completely blows Bret out of the water in terms of showmanship and mic skills, IMO.

In the end I voted for Shawn. I think the only reason it took me so long to decide is because I find Michaels' apologists so very annoying. But if just comparing the two wrestlers side by side it has to be Shawn for me.

I understand that it's a matter of opinion. The way you originally worded it, however, implied that Shawn is DEFINITELY a candidate for one of the best ever and Bret was simply 'good'. Even if you don't feel Bret is one of the best, you'd be a bit silly not to think that he'd be a CANDIDATE for best ever to a lot of people.

I don't like him outside of in-ring performance but it's not that simple. I don't really like Shawn outside of his in-ring performance either, he was the ultimate premadonna asshole. If I'm to be objective here, I still think Shawn is a better performer in almost every facet. Bret was a great technician and the average fan could relate to him. Shawn was larger than life. Everything he did was extravagant and was executed perfectly almost every time. To me Shawn wins this.
