The Christmas Movie Thread

Now that the holiday season is officially upon us, that means that the holiday movie season is also under way. Last night you were forced to choose between Home Alone, Elf, and Love Actually. Not a difficult choice for some, but a life altering dilemma for others. And it's only going to get tougher.

So talk about your favorite Christmas movies here, and if you wish, recommend some lesser known holiday classics so that we all may enjoy.

Schlomey 11-27-2009 09:27 AM

I always watch the standards. A Christmas Story (about 5 times for no reason) & National Lampoon Christmas Vacation.

I'm also partial to A Muppet's Christmas Carol. Plus I heard the Muppets have a new movie planned for this year called "Letters To Santa". Having a kid gives me an excuse to enjoy the Muppets again.

Lock Jaw 11-27-2009 10:53 AM

A Muppet Family Christmas is always good too.

Schlomey 11-27-2009 11:06 AM

I have yet to watch a muppet movie (starring the original muppets of course) that I haven't enjoyed.

I agree with MFC.

Xero 11-27-2009 12:04 PM

I hate A Christmas Story.

But every year, without fail, I watch the God damn thing when it's on TNT or TBS.

ClockShot 11-27-2009 12:24 PM

How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Charlie Brown Christmas.
Flintstones Christmas. (The one which Fred takes over for Santa when he falls off his roof.)
Scrooged.

Schlomey 11-27-2009 12:50 PM

Flintstones Christmas is awesome.

Scrooged is a great film but its not a "classic" that I watch every year. I contimplated adding it to my list but I only added the ones that are yearly staples. Good choice none the less mate.

Die Hard

i hope it snows this year it's not crimbo without some snow

Back in the year 2003 a fellow I have never heard of agreed with you. Never thought of it as a seasonal film but it is badass regardless. :y:

mitchables 11-27-2009 02:20 PM

Nightmare Before Christmas. Gorgeous animation, amazing soundtrack, original and fun story. Delicious.

Schlomey 11-27-2009 02:21 PM

Fuck. Of the most watchable movies ever and I forgot about it!? I'm slipping in my old age. I too watch this film anytime and everytime it's on. Amazing.

Die Hard 2 also takes place at Christmas, but it feels more like it's just doing it because it's the sequel. It doesn't really embrace the theme as well as Die Hard does.

Lethal Weapon also takes place at Christmas.

Droford 11-27-2009 03:24 PM

Elf
Home Alone
Original Miracle on 34th Street (though the remake wasn't that bad).
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon, not Jim Carrey Abomination)
Polar Express
Silent Night, Deadly Night (Im eagerly awaiting a remake..)

Blue Demon 11-27-2009 03:27 PM

Beavis and Butthead Do Christmas is a tradition for me and a buddy of mine.

Schlomey 11-27-2009 03:34 PM

Oh yeah....South Park "Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo"

Supreme Olajuwon 11-27-2009 04:32 PM

The Polar Express was very well done but GOD it's depressing.

Lock Jaw 11-27-2009 04:44 PM

I like the first Santa Clause (Tim Allen) movie. The sequels are garbage though.

Going into the realm of TV:

The Simpsons: The first appearance of Santa's Little Helper. Also I like the Funzo one.

Futurama: Robot Santa episode.

The Office: YAAAAAANKEE SWAP!

The Jayman 11-27-2009 04:44 PM

A Muppet Christmas Carol
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon version)
Home Alone 1&2
Jingle All the Way

Schlomey 11-27-2009 04:46 PM

The Office has the best X-Mas & Halloween (non-cartoon) shows on TV. Hands down.

thedamndest 11-28-2009 11:58 AM

A little belated, but Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving movie. I own that but forgot to watch it.

Sixx 11-28-2009 12:49 PM

Santa with Muscles!! It was on today.

Home Alone 1 and 2, yeah, every fucking year.

Juan 11-28-2009 02:12 PM

Kapoutman 11-28-2009 02:20 PM

Ghostbusters 2 is a fun Christmas/Holidays movie.

A Christmas Story
Miracle on 34th Street

Ermaximus 11-30-2009 01:27 PM

I watched Jingle All the Way last night. :/ Paul Wight...WTF? "I'm gonna deck your halls bub!"

Dark-Slicer Diago 11-30-2009 05:08 PM

On Christmas, I always seem to watch

The Nightmare Before Chirstmas
Home Alone 1/2
Jingle All The Way
A Muppet Christmas Carol
How The Grinch Stole Christmas(cartoon)
and since I saw it a few years ago, Santa's Slay(Goldberg as an evil Santa is strangely funny to me)

Boondock Saint 11-30-2009 05:23 PM

Santa Claus: The Movie

Triple Naitch 11-30-2009 05:39 PM

Muppet Family Christmas is the greatest Christmas movie of all time, but it is impossible to find on DVD in stores.

Schlomey, Muppets: Letters from Santa aired last year on NBC. It's pretty good, but not quite like the old Muppets used to be.

Heros Welcome 11-30-2009 08:21 PM

Christmas Vacation. In my eyes the best Christmas movie!

Other then some of the ones mentioned I think Gremlins should be included as well.

Is this the one in which it turns out that John Candy is homeless at the end?

If that's the one, I was sooo saddenned by that ending as a kid. I felt sympathy for fat people for like 2 days afterwards.

Sixx 12-01-2009 02:08 PM

Then I probably watched Terminator II and felt sympathy for cyborgs from the future.

He's not homeless. He's a traveling shower curtain salesman. He tells Steve Martin all about his wife and then it turns out she's dead so he has no where to go for Thanksgiving. It is really sad :'(

I believe it went something like this:

Steve Martin said his goodbyes and left, then came back after a second to see Candy still sitting there (don't really remember where) and asked him "Why aren't you going home?" and he said "I have no home". Might be wrong, haven't seen it in years.

Just wiki'd it. Apparently the wife is dead and he is homeless. I still might watch this now.

The Mask 12-02-2009 05:05 PM

I cant beleive it took 32 posts to finally have someone bring up the greatest Christmas movie ever. That scene is still one of my all time favorite scenes and i've probably qoute the " Halleluja, Holy Shit! Wheres the Tylenol? " line the last 5 sundays after the Colts games.

RP 12-04-2009 05:20 AM

LOL the way his family is watching him go nuts.

Jeritron 12-04-2009 09:38 PM

someone brought it up in the first post

Jeritron 12-04-2009 09:45 PM

How about Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming To Town?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTlChGL0lsk

Fuckin amazing.

Those were always my favorites. Just have really good memories of them and they feel like such a halmark of Christmas. Plus they tell the most famous and traditional Christmas stories, but with all these random characters and plots. How cool is giving Santa and Rudolph these adventure backstories?

Plus the animation and style is awesome.

Also wanted to note Christmas with the Kranks is the worst movie I've ever seen. Period. Holiday movie or not.
