RIP Eddie 'Umaga' Fatu

Edward Fatu, 36, is hospitalized in Houston and in what was described as life threatening condition by a long-time friend.

His family was told to come into town as quickly as possible.

Details are sketchy at this point but he apparently fell asleep last night while watching television, and several hours later, his wife found him not breathing with blood coming out of his nose and he was rushed to the hospital.

BigDaddyCool 12-04-2009 02:18 PM

Wow, sucks. Don't do drugs.

Anybody Thrilla 12-04-2009 02:19 PM

God damn it, this is awful. I just met the guy back in May. :(

I'm going to a local wrestling show tonight with Rosey on the card (now RO-Z). I wonder if he's even going to compete now.

RIP Umaga.

CSL 12-04-2009 02:21 PM

Okay, now it seems some fool published this 'report' early

Tb1 12-04-2009 02:23 PM

Yeah I can't find a report confirming this.

fuck.

CSL 12-04-2009 02:24 PM

PWTorch have now removed the article...

The Destroyer 12-04-2009 02:25 PM

Can't find anything anywhere to support this.

It's been added to his Wikipedia article but the PW Torch link in the citation is a 404.

Schlomey 12-04-2009 02:26 PM

if this is another daniel pena scandal I'm going to hunt his little ass down.

Ol Dirty Dastard 12-04-2009 02:26 PM

Yeah hoping this is fake.

IC Champion 12-04-2009 02:27 PM

I cant find anything confirming it.

Lock Jaw 12-04-2009 02:28 PM

Yeah, was just looking around and the only thing that checks out so far is Kennedy's Twitter.

I'll hope for the best until I hear otherwise.

Yeah, I checked Wiki as soon as I saw the Kennedy comment and there was nothing. 10 minutes later there was a PWTorch report and he was dead on Wikipedia. All seems to have stemmed from the Kennedy comment. Wiki now says 'suspected drug overdose'. Maybe he's in a bad way? Do people 'say a prayer' for already dead people?

mike adamle 12-04-2009 02:31 PM

Ryan Clark says he's in the hospital and in bad shape, but it's fucking Ryan Clark.

The Gold Standard 12-04-2009 02:32 PM

On the PWTorch app, the article is still up.

The Gold Standard 12-04-2009 02:32 PM

They just took it off the app.

This is one reason why Wikipedia is a good resource... people update the article with new, correct information as soon as it comes out.

The sad thing is...given the apparent repeated drug test failures and WWE firing him for not attending rehab, I can't say I'm surprised. Really hope he pulls through.

Bummer. Always liked the Umaga character.

But I'm with the majority, drugs are bad. Should have taken the rehab visit instead of leaving the WWE.

Sad day. :(

An eerie thing I just though of. If he does pass, I'm pretty sure his final match was in Hulk's Australia against Kennedy...Eddie Guerrero's final match was also with Kennedy. :(

Breaking Update: Talent Tweeting On Umaga
By Ryan Clark on Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 3:28 PM EST

Several wrestlers have posted messages on Twitter regarding the hospitalization and rumored death of former WWE superstar Eddie “Umaga” Fatu. Here’s what some of them are saying:

Ken “Mr. Kennedy” Anderson: “Say a prayer for my boy Umaga”

D’Angelo Dinero / Elijah Burke: “Pope was informed many hours ago of my friend Umaga. Pope will not comment until the family speaks, neither should you. Prayer is key! ~ PHS”

Bobby Lashley: “Very sad day today. A good friend is gone.”

CSL 12-04-2009 06:11 PM

Former WWE star Umaga (Eddie Fatu) was removed from life support earlier this afternoon, reports WWE announcer Jim Ross, who says he spoke with a friend of Fatu's family.

Fatu's official death is expected to be announced this evening. He was on life support at a North Houston hospital after his wife found him unresponsive this morning at his home in Spring, Texas.

Fatu reportedly suffered a massive heart attack. We reported originally that Fatu was found bleeding from his mouth and nose when he was found in his home.

:(

CWK 12-04-2009 06:14 PM

........

Thats good WWE that you all mentioned on when you terminated Umaga's contract when he just died. Wouldn't want any bad press to get on your company or have people think that he died while employed with the company.

What heartless, selfish assholes they are.

TGR 12-04-2009 06:44 PM

As a side note, how many more stigmas can Mr. Kennedy be labeled with? Son of a bitch cant get a break, first with the being injury prone thing, then being the last opponent of two wrestlers before they passed on.

I'd be shaken as hell if I were he.

CWK 12-04-2009 06:45 PM

Umaga, you were in a headlining match and helped draw 80,000+ people in Detroit. Thats amazing. Rest in peace.

CWK 12-04-2009 06:46 PM

I know, they mean well, but they didn't have to write the date in there of when they fired him. He JUST died. Just now. Let a couple of days pass at least.

Vastardikai 12-04-2009 06:51 PM

At least they aren't interviewing his wife and bringing up his drug use during the interview.

You are completely 100% right, forgot all about that. So long ago. WWE has not sunk to a new low. The interview with Melanie Pillman the day after Brian's death was the lowest thing ever. Vince McMahon should be ashamed of himself.

RatedGSuperstar 12-04-2009 06:55 PM

The wording sucks, but I don't find it to be malicious at all. I suppose they could've said "Fatu last appeared in the WWE at the Extreme Rules PPV" or something, but I don't think they meant any harm by it.

Now if they have CM Punk come out next week and tell us that he tried to tell Umaga to stop doing drugs and now he's dead, then yeah, that would be in bad taste.

Just the way they said it "He was terminated from his contract on June 11, 2009." That sounds so cold.

How about, "Umaga last performed with WWE until June of this year and was most recently on an independent wrestling tour of Australia, we send our condolences to his family."

That would have been much more professional and compassionate.

XCaliber 12-04-2009 07:01 PM

It's ridiculous that they felt that they had to add the actual date they might as well have taken it a step further and have Vince McMahon come out and say "I didn't do it he screwed himself!" it makes them look more guitly if anything.

thedamndest 12-04-2009 07:02 PM

Because the WWE doesn't work with the independent company and realistically anyone concerned about getting compassion from wwe.com probably has their head up their ass.

CWK 12-04-2009 07:03 PM

The guy has suffered enough embarrassment, they publicly announced his wellness policy suspensions and his release when it happened. I just thought that in his death that the notice they posted should have been 100% respectful and it wasn't.

Emperor Smeat 12-04-2009 07:04 PM

Well actually, in defense of that. i remember when Vince showed a soft side and showed compassion by letting Kurt Angle out of his deal back in 2006 when Kurt was in real bad shape.

Its good that Kurt pulled the wool over Vince's eyes though on that one because Vince deserved it. He screwed over so many other people.

thedamndest 12-04-2009 07:09 PM

They publicly announce everyone's wellness policy suspensions. You really aren't indicating to me how telling everyone that he didn't work there at the time of his death is disrespectful.

Also, it isn't really the WWE's fault they would put something like that up there. When a wrestler dies, who is the first person Nancy Graces calls. The WWE. Writing when he stopping working for the company is just answering a question everyone is already going to ask.

CWK 12-04-2009 07:10 PM

They could have put his career information in a separate post on their site.

I remember actually marking out when him and Great Khali suddenly went at it in a match where they were both heels.

XL 12-04-2009 07:29 PM

I really see no problem here.

WWE dumped Eddie Fatu cos he was a druggie. In fact, I think they sacked him cos he refused the help they offered him. He died (presumably) due to this reason. Why shouldn't they dissassociate themselves with the guy?

Yeah it's sad that the guy has passed at a young age, but WWE/Vince tried to help him, they should not shoulder any blame here. In noting when he left the company they are distancing themselves.

It would have been harse if the sentence read: Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name "Umaga." Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009 when he wouldn't accept our offer to help him through the drug addiction that no doubt played a part in his eventual death.
