I just read a rumour about MG2, thought it was worth repeating over here. It's pretty big if it's true.

SPOILER: show

For those who’ve wanted to see Mario and Sonic together in a platforming environment, prepare your jaw to hit the floor…if this is true.

We have a news tip in from Playx4, who is ultimately citing the Twitter feed of British magazine NGamer; this isn’t coming from any random place. Two tweets from the magazine staff indicate Sonic will make an appearance in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2–and the hedgehog will be playable.

Here are the two tweets of note, dated just a few hours ago, and NGamer claims they are “from a trusted source:”

Quote:

We’ve just had some shocking news from an inside source at Nintendo: Sonic will be a playable character in Mario Galaxy 2! Wha?

More teasing from our insider: Sonic levels will be in ‘Green Hill Galaxy’. Matthew’s nearly in tears (of despair)
It is kinda hard to believe just on its merits alone. But what is now NGamer has been around for a while; though this incarnation has only been around since 2006, the entity is owned by Future Publishing–the same folks that own GamesMaster and the CVG website–and the Nintendo specific magazine has existed in some form over in Britain since 1992.

We are treating this as rumor, as should you. There is much to be skeptical about, but we’ll let you know of anything we hear. We thank Playx4 for sending this in via our News Tips system. If you have news–or perhaps credible rumor–to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking News Tips at the top of every page.

Source. Pretty awesome if true, which does seem unlikely. If something like this happened, I'm sure they'd not waste it in one galaxy in MG2.

I know this isn't an "update" kind of thread but I didn't want to make a new thread just for this rumour.

Kalyx triaD 02-06-2010 01:06 AM

A true crossover deal. Nice if true.

Drakul 02-06-2010 01:51 AM

I hope, if it's true, it's more than just a Galaxy and a proper cross over. After the rumour came out, someone pointed out that in the E3 trailer for SMG2, at about 30 seconds in, Yoshi is needed to eat something to run really fast up a Sonic-esque ramp. The person suggested that could be a way to compensate for Mario being slower than Sonic.

I'm still not totally convinced myself. It would be great to fight Bowser and Dr Robotnik with a Orchestrated remix of their themes.

OssMan 02-06-2010 01:54 AM

I saw a pic of that. Wasn't sure if true. I thought it was just a pic of one of those Mario and Sonic Olympics games.

Drakul 02-06-2010 01:58 AM

I saw no image. Where did you see it? It probably was from a M&S game.

OssMan 02-06-2010 02:30 AM

It was on 4chan somewhere. Had Mario carrying sonic running up some big green thing made out of squares.

Mario Galaxy 2 has a release date. 23rd of May this year in the US. No idea on the date anywhere else though. Although Australia was told "mid year".

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will also be playable at today's day-long event.

Earlier today, writers at a similar event in Australia learned that both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Other M would be hitting stores there "mid year".

First revealed at E3, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is said to have 90 percent new levels with the rest being levels from the original Mario Galaxy with different objectives. Shigeru Miyamoto said at the time that the original plan was to "essentially create new variations of the worlds in Super Mario Galaxy." But, over time, the developers have had so many ideas that most of those originals were cut.

Stay tuned for more news coming out of the summit as we continue to report live from San Francisco and of course check back later today for our hands-on impressions.

Mario will be joined in this new adventure by old buddy Yoshi who will use his tongue to grab items and shoot them back at enemies, or to snag attach points and swing across chasms.

When Yoshi eats a Dash Pepper, he gets so hot he can run up steep inclines and vertical walls. When he eats a Blimp Fruit, he inflates like a balloon and floats to new heights.

This drill is a new power up which allows him to tunnel through the planet's surface all the way to the other side.

New Comet Metals will unlock harder levels with even more challenges.

Well, I think it probably is but I just googled "sonic in mario galaxy 2" and I got to an MTV page that the Google results said mentioned something about Sonic and SMG2. When I clicked the link, it was 404'd. So I did the RSS thing and got the taken down article.

Nintendo opened the floodgates of "Super Mario Galaxy 2" at its Q1 Summit in San Francisco. Around eight new levels were playable, each with their own special quirks and gameplay mechanics. Here are some of the more memorable ones:

Hightale Falls Galaxy
The Sonic mention in the headline refers to this level in particular. It prominently features Yoshi (now ride-able in "Galaxy 2") and chili pepper pick-ups. Snacking on a pepper while riding the lovable dinosaur will cause Yoshi to burst forward with great enthusiasm for about 15 seconds, turning his normal, steady trot into a sprint for life itself. The level focused heavily on this mechanic, as you were basically guiding Yoshi across twisty, gravity-defying tracks, picking up peppers along the way to keep your speed up. It definitely had a "Sonic Adventure" vibe going, which is neat as high speed was never really an element in the first "Mario Galaxy."

Super Massive Galaxy
The name of this galaxy may be a little on the nose, but fans of "Super Mario Bros. 3" will definitely appreciate this one, as it features ginormous versions of Mario staples like koopas, pipes and goombas. To give you an idea of the scale, you can actually wall jump off one of the spinning coins in the level, they're that big. Perhaps more amusing, the level starts with a massive star proclaiming to Mario: "We grow 'em big here!" Indeed you do.

Bowser Jr's Fearsome Fleet
Another Yoshi-centric level, this too revolves around his impressive gastro-intestinal system, but in a slightly different way. There are a number of Bullet Bill-firing cannons throughout the level and you basically have to swallow them and spit them back out to blow up objects blocking your path. Add in a moving platform and about a half-dozen rockets all lined up and ready to blow your adorable head off and you have quite a precarious situation on your hands. Bowser Jr. doesn't play around.

Flip-Swap Galaxy
While most of the levels in "Mario Galaxy 2" are pretty kind to the every-day gamer, some are not. Flip-Swap Galaxy is a punishing 4-minute dash where you must collect 100 purple coins and reach the end of the map in once place. The coins are spread across a track made up of panels. About half of the panels are visible at any one time and you have to jump and spin in the air to make the visible and invisible panels swap, allowing you to progress further. It's a lot more nightmarish than it sounds, and that's before they introduce rolling Chomps and moving electricity barriers. Oh, and no checkpoints. Punishing doesn't quite do it. Thankfully it's not one of the required levels for the main quest and is simply a bonus galaxy rewarded for finding certain coins, but at least the hardcore can rest easy knowing that there's plenty for them to obsess over.

While it may not be as groundbreaking as the first "Galaxy," it's clear the developers at Nintendo aren't close to running out of platforming ideas and will be throwing plenty of curve-balls your way with "Super Mario Galaxy 2." The game launches on May 23rd.

Ever since the Sonic "leak", people have suggested Yoshi may be used in areas where Sonic would use his speed but Mario can't because he's too slow. I wouldn't get my hopes up for Sonic but you never know. If he is in the game, I'd think he'd be a secret character that you unlock by getting the Comet Metals and completing all the harder challanges.

Taft 02-25-2010 11:59 PM

Sonic's not happening.

Its a set of .rar files, and will extract into the .iso. Its typical of scene releases. Its just so you can download them in parts if you can't get them all at once or if one you downloaded is corrupted.

Savio 05-25-2010 06:05 PM

yeah but 50 is a lot especially when you only need one.

Requiem 05-25-2010 06:40 PM

lol it is completely typical just like Boomer said. A lot of releases are in .rars like that. It compresses it into pieces usually and makes it smaller. Then all you do is extract one file and it pieces them together automatically into an iso.

Savio 05-25-2010 07:32 PM

Nah what i am saying that you only need one of the compressed files to play it....not all 50. No piecing together at all.

Requiem 05-25-2010 08:40 PM

What? You need all of the compressed files in order to extract it into a usable COMPLETE iso. Don't get what you are saying, because you DO need all of them. They all have a piece of the completed file. YOU don't piece anything together. It will do it when you extract it.

G 05-25-2010 09:35 PM

What is green stars, the ones where you had to find Luigi. I don't think you have to get those. You get the option to play as Luigi in some levels but all I've noticed is that it just lets you race against your ghost afterwards.

Green stars are optional, but I want to 100% the game. They only pop up after you get the original 120 stars, and beat Bowser a second time. They are basically hide-and-seek stars. And after you get all of them, you get access to the final galaxy.

242 stars in total from what I've heard. I'm at 177 or something.
