Spider-Man Reboot
So it looks like Fox is rebooting the Spider-Man series now that Raimi dropped out of #4...
My first thought when I read about this was that they were going to take it in some awful new direction, probably making it "gritty and realistic"... Turns out I was right. That's exactly what they're doing. I'm not a big comic book fan, but rather a casual lover of movies in general. But holy shit, this is the worst idea I have ever heard. The very concept of Spider-Man makes the concept of a gritty, stripped down version of the story a disaster from the get go. How is anybody going to take the story remotely seriously? Spiderman is such an absurd concept to begin with, taking away the "comic book feel" of it will just serve to highlight this fact. Thoughts from actual Spider Man fans? |

Not only do I think the reboot is too soon but isn't necessery I'm glad that Raimi stuck to his guns and proved just how stupid some of the execs at Sony are.

Well I've been a spiderman my whole life but only regularly started collecting the comics around the time brand new day began, because I never had access to a comic store until grade 11.
I think you're right that spider-man works best with a light hearted tone, but stories like New Ways to Die and the Gauntlet prove that he can work with a gritty darker tone. I mean his life still revolves around the death of his uncle, that's pretty dark. I guess all in all I'd enjoy the movie either way. |

Since Raimi's version was stripped down from the get-go, I'm not sure what the bitching is about. But I'm sure there will be more bitching still. |
Thing is that it still had that fantastical, comic-book feel to it. If it goes the way of the The Dark Knight, I don't think anybody will be able to take it seriously

I will watch this movie when it is available for free online or at a friend's home. Until then, I will complain moderately.

Anyway, kinda surprised at the reaction to this. I seem to remember people having issues with Spidey 3 and the core cast in general. All of a sudden the net seems to mourn a reboot they practically begged for since Spidey 3.

Any REAL Spider-Man movie will feature a running voice over by Peter Parker throughout the entire film, and 60% of Spider-Man's lines will be snappy, smart-ass one-liners (100% when he's fighting). |

Obviously he's going to like it. It's based on Marvel Comics. I've yet to see him say anything moderately negative about in-development comic movies on here.

It could be good though, he is right. I'd say it has potential as long as they don't try to make it too dark, or too teeny bop like Twilight or that MTV Spiderman cartoon.
The chances are, they'll do one or all of those things. It could be good if they build the whole thing to be balls to the wall like the comics, and planned it in advance. I wouldn't mind seeing Kingpin and some of the lesser villains showcased. Most of them don't have the depth to carry a movie, but if they're used as henchmen to a larger villain that could work. Plus they could do more in the way of the Sinister Six, The Goblins, Smythe, and eventually the symbiotes. Planning is good. As a reboot though, it's way too soon. A Spiderman reboot is fine in concept, and was inevitable. It could do just as well as Batman did, but within 5 years of the previous franchise is ridiculous. Maybe it will take a long time to get off the ground and the public will grow and appetite/be more open to a new take. |
Also, replacing J Jonah Jameson is going to be the biggest crying shame. There is no way they're going to be able to do it as well as they did with JK Simmons.

Their best bet is to stray from Raimi's JJ as far as possible. Any sort of imitation will be met with war.

That's also probably their worst bet. What I'm saying is they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. JJ in those movies is just too good.

Well we can't have him be a nice guy, he's historically a dick. So from here he's either a funny 'break time' character who hates Spidey or a serious hardass editor who hates Spidey. There's certainly degrees but who are we kidding. His Ultimate incarnation is a nice blend, though.

So Raimi's Spidermans are the Burton films, these will be the Schumachers, and in 10-15 years, once the character recovers from the damage, they'll have their Nolans

Kalyx, admit that although rumors can be false, they can also be true. Sometimes common sense dictates when to take stock in rumors. Even if Robert Pattinson is just an internet rumor, it wouldn't suprise me for a second if it came true.
I remember the Vulture "rumor" and the whole reboot "rumor" that you ripped me for perpetuating. Both came true, and that's just pertaining to this particular movie. |
When the studio denies a rumor like that it doesn't mean it's not true. It means they want to find and announce their director first, or they want to make the announcement on their own terms.
Seriously, that's how this shit works. I think we all should understand how the industry works by now, especially those of us who follows movie development news to this extent. |
The studio didn't deny the Vulture thing, though, or the reboot. History taught me that 'denying to comment' gave credit to rumors, but out right denial is usually final.
I'm not saying he won't be Spidey or not, I'm just reading the damn response. |
Also note that I was reacting to those who seemed to have avoided that portion of the official response, as if his casting was final. Seemed like reaching to me.
