Fantasy Baseball 2010
|
Hi Moonax
|
Yeah shit, ridiculously early this year. I try to never draft earlier than like 2 weeks before the season. So many spring injuries.
|
Hello Mackrem.
I suppose the advantage is that leagues can be set up and the draft date set for later. The biggest problem who are all in for it now, but who then piss off before the start of the season, miss the draft and then you have a dead team or two screwing up the league. I am assuming Hero will be running the main H2H league this year. There are a number of new things in the Yahoo leagues such as Acquisition budgets, Auction drafts, Head-to-Head One-Win and Head-to-Head Points league types. I don't know if people would be interested in something like a roto league, or a salary cap/budget league. |
I've always wondered how I'd fare in a cap league.
|
I'd be happy to set up a 'different' league - ie cap, roto etc, assuming that there were enough people interested, and if people were to give some preferences.
|
I'm in for the main league or whatever really.
|
I look forward to defending my title in Hero's league.
But yeah, another type of league along with the normal ones could be interesting. Never done one besides H2H but I'd be interested in a different type along with the main one. |
I sent out emails to everyone who was in my league last year.
Busch Supreme Hero Dragon Spilchuk CNM MVP Rick Hanso 2 spots open. Holla if you wanna play. |
The advantage with a roto league is that it doesn't matter if you have odd numbers which is good. I'll set something up unless other people want satisfy their inner Bud Selig/Bettman fantasies and commish it.
|
I tried baseball last year, dont really watch it but understand how it works. I did decent I think for not knowing any players.
Anyways in short if you guys need one more manager to fill out the league let me know, I may not know much about baseball but I assure you the team wont be dead. |
I'm playing in Wadding's league as usual, but I'm down to join one of the other ones too, especially a roto or cap league.
|
I'm tempted, Wadding, but I don't know if I can really deal w/ another league this year.
|
Set up the league. couple of open spots to replace those that weren't active. I'm all for making chnages if others are up yo it. But the main thing was to set something up and then go from there...
|
Hero, do you want me to whip that candy ass in two leagues? ;)
|
I'd like to play but I always feel stupid when I play fantasy baseball
|
I'd like to be part of the TPWW league this season.
I miss the signup here every year. I've got the time on my hands to do extra leagues this year, so count me in. |
I'd be interested in any leagues if someone has openings. PM me.
Edit: Excellent 600th post. |
Does a Roto league with an auction draft appeal? It doesn't look like Yahoo has a salary cap facility.

I want in..someone send me something..
|
I've set up a salary cap roto league. I am happy to run it as a novices league for people who want to have some fun. Nothing too serious or hardcore - since a number of people say they want to play but aren't too sure. Kind of AAA fantasy baseball :) PM me if you want to play and I'll send you the login details. The only proviso is try to be active :)
|
I would like back in if THAT WOULD BE AGREEABLE
If you remember I basically shat on everyone when I played |
Baseball Furries gonna dominate
|
Im gonna beat the pine tar out of everyone in both leagues.
|
Just a heads up about the auction draft. For those who haven't done it before.
It is worth doing one of the mock drafts to get some practice. In the draft you have a budget of $260 to spend on your roster. In turn each person nominates a player, it can be any player they like - so if you want to nominate say Christian Guzman as the first player then fine, or if you want to nominate Albert Pujols, that is also fine. Once a player has been nominated 30 seconds of bidding starts. In the final 10 seconds the clock resets to 10 after every bid, once the clock runs down on the final bid the player is then sold to the team with the highest bid. Your bids are limited by the fact that Yahoo will not allow you to go bust. So for example if you have a 20 man roster, and 260 dollars, the most you will be allowed to bid is $241 - ie so you have $19 to spend on the rest of your roster. So you need to manage your budget carefully and not spunk all your cash on one guy. The draft seems to take a little bit longer than a normal draft, also, unlike in a traditional draft, you can't wander off and have a cup of tea in case someone nominates a player who you want for drafting. |
I'm looking forward to trying that.
|
Okay...I just did an Auction Mock Draft. I strongly recommend everybody does mocks first to get used to the do's and don't do's of drafting...cause some of the people in this were retarded and clearly panicked. Pujols went off the board first at a lofty $45 (makes sense, figured that would set the tone)...then Hanley went next at the same price (I guess I can see that). Ryan Howard then soon went for like $50 from somebody who clearly didn't know what they were doing. A-Rod went for like $40 and then David Wright (who I love) got nominated and people panicked and Wright went for like $45...come on. Made Pujols and Hanley look like bargains.
Also, if you aren't going to make it to the draft........autopick can and will fuck you over royally and spend way more than it should on mediocre guys. This will allow the people actually drafting to sit back and get amazing bargains. Hope to see most of the people turn up for the draft, should be really fun. |
Just noticed that both leagues are drafting on the same day within a half an hour of each other, which probably isn't going to work..
|
I'll play any and all leagues.
|
lol holy fuck. I JUST got the e-mail with my mock draft results now. I ditched the draft after I had picked my first 9 or so players as everyone else was leaving so I didn't see the point in sticking around. I had quit it like 2 hours ago...so overall the draft was like 3 hours. Pretty crazy.
Fun though...I managed to put together a pretty damn good offense. |
I can move the date of ours forward by a week if that makes it easier. Is everyone happy drafting 3 weeks before the start of the season? (14th March)
Big Vito - if you look on the main page for the league it predicts the draft will last 5 and half hours :o |
doing a mock draft now
|
In my experience with Auction drafts, I always sit back and let the big names go for the big bucks and then craft my roster when everyone else is sitting back pinching pennies.
I usually never spend money on pitching outside of a Top Tier Starter. Should be interesting. |
Moonie, you old horse, link me up. I'd like to try a cap league.
|
Sent. That is a bit odd because I used the 'send email invite' feature Yahoo has to various people. Did you not get it? Did anyone get the email invite thing?
|
I'm 100% sure my teams will suck

I'll move it back a week. I am not sure if people want to be doing two drafts over a weekend - especially if they last up to 5 hours.
I've moved it back a week to the 14th March. Is that ok with everyone? Is the time ok? Not too late, not too early? |
Its good for me, Ill sign up when I get home. Now a disclaimer, I am not as knowledgeable about baseball as I am with hockey. Though I will do my best.

I know on the auction league homepage or whatever it says the budget is $100, but all the mock drafts are $260. Is that $100 just a default thing for now or is that what its gonna be set at?
|
The $100 is your waiver budget.
Normally the waiver priority is whoever is first in line. In an auction league like this - you bid using your $100 for waiver wire players. So say for example a hot new player is called up and appears on waivers - to get him you have to bid for him. Whoever bids the most gets him. I don't know but I assume it is a blind auction (that is to say no one knows what other people have bid) so obviously you could bid $20 for a player and no one else could have bid for him and you could have got him for $1 so you have to manage your bids and not spunk your cash. But as I say, I am not entirely sure, it might be that we can see what other people have bid and can then try to out bid them. The $100 waiver budget can be changed by the commish. So I can always change the budget if people feel $100 is too little. |
Ah, I see. Thats for after the draft. For some reason thought that was the initial amount to use for the draft itself.
|
I believe we should keep the $$ set at what Yahoo sets it. I did a mock draft (spent too much on some scrubs) but it is a fair amount.
Lookin forward to this auction draft with you bums |
I'm in the auction league. Sounds like a fun experiment. But who the fuck is Ozzie & the Straw? That was my team last year, you bastard.
|
Interesting choice with FPCT as a category. I like it. Kinda levels the playing field a bit. Also drives the value of OF and 1B with IF eligibility way up.

|
All Cubs fans know defense is worthless. They've had 8 guys playing defense every game for 100 years and it hasn't won them a thing
|
If you drop a player in the auction league, do you get back the $$ you purchased him for? What about trades - does $$ exchange hands?

Life would be very boring if every league used the same settings, the same scoring categories and had the same teams every single year. This league is about trying different things - different set ups, different drafts, roto and different scoring, and giving new players a chance to play.
I am quite happy to listen to thoughts and opinions on different scoring cats. On the subject of scoring cats - it has always struck me as odd that power pitchers are considered to be more valuable than finesse pitchers primarily because of the 'K' scoring cat - would people object if I added ground ball/fly ball outs - as a scoring cat? My argument is twofold - firstly - 27 outs are 27 outs - why should we reward one method over other methods? secondly - it gives the manager a bit more to think about in terms of managing his pitchers when drafting rather than just lining up 10 power pitchers and then drafting them. Hero - in answer to your question - I don't think so. I think the draft money is separate from the waiver money. If you spunk $60 on a guy who blows out his arm on opening day then that money is lost. I don't think cash can be involved in trades - but it might. One final thing - the number of games per position is limited to 162. So you have to be careful if you 'stream' say your 1B guys in the first few months because you could find yourself entering Sept with only 10 games left. |
If you have 2 1B but always use one as a UTIL. does his stats go as a 1B or as the UTIL spot?
|
lol doing another Mock, Pujols as the first guy nominated as usual...then one guy tried to type in 23 and accidentally typed in 230. So he lost all but $30 out of his budget on one guy and immediately left the draft upon realizing his team was fucked.
|
Hero - I think that the games is by slot not by player - so you have 162 1B games which can be filled by any number of players, and you have 162 Utl games which can be filled with any number of players.
I'd like to add maybe 1 or 2 more hitting cats - any suggestions or preferences? I'd like to avoid anything that makes any one type of hitter more valuable than another ie slugging but I am open to ideas. |
Damn, I really wish that mock I did earlier was a real league. :( Because that guy fucked up badly with Pujols, it essentially became a 9-person draft.
Pitching staff had King Felix, Verlander, Peavy, Cain, and Webb as starters. Bailey, Jenks, Capps, Soriano as closers. Wright, Reyes, Miggy Cabrera, Morneau, Span, Adam Jones, Justin Upton, Pence, Polanco, and Miguel Montero as my starting lineup, with Beltran also stashed on the DL. |
total bases is a good catergory. While the sluggers get a lot of mileage out of it, the line drive hitters can really excel at it too.
|
Yeah I like TB too. I took first in a league that counted TB but did not count H, 2B, 3B, or HR, so it basically favored hitters that got on base and scored runs in any way possible.
Does Yahoo let you choose more sophisticated sabermetrics for categories like GPA or FIP? |
If you're going to do TB then just do Slugging or OPS so you have the % instead of the aggregate. Always best to reward quality over quantity IMO.
|
As a heads up to people - this is the list of available Yahoo scoring cats.
Batters * * Required o Games Played o Games Started o At Bats o Runs o Hits o Singles o Doubles o Triples o Home Runs o Runs Batted In o Sacrifice Hits o Sacrifice Flys o Stolen Bases o Caught Stealing o Walks o Intentional Walks o Hit By Pitch o Strikeouts o Ground Into Double Play o Total Bases o Putouts o Assists o Errors o Fielding Percentage o Batting Average o On-base Percentage o Slugging Percentage o On-base + Slugging Percentage o Extra Base Hits o Net Stolen Bases o Stolen Base Percentage o Hitting for the Cycle o Plate Appearances o Grand Slam Home Runs o Outfield Assists o Double Plays Turned o Catcher Interference Pitchers * * Required o Pitching Appearances o Games Started o Innings Pitched o Wins o Losses o Complete Games o Shutouts o Saves o Outs o Hits o Total Batters Faced o Runs o Earned Runs o Home Runs o Walks o Intentional Walks o Hit Batters o Strikeouts o Wild Pitches o Balks o Stolen Bases Allowed o Batters Grounded Into Double Plays o Save Chances o Holds o Total Bases Allowed o Earned Run Average o (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched o Strikeouts per Walk Ratio o Strikeouts per Nine Innings o Pitch Count o Singles Allowed o Doubles Allowed o Triples Allowed o Relief Wins o Relief Losses o Pickoffs o Relief Appearances o On-base Percentage Against o Winning Percentage o Hits Per Nine Innings o Walks Per Nine Innings o No Hitters o Perfect Games o Save Percentage o Inherited Runners Scored o Quality Starts o Blown Saves o Net Saves I am happy to take thoughts on adding, not adding any of those stats. |
quality starts is a good one IMO
|
Did you know that if a pitcher pitched the minimum requirements for a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER) every game, he would have an ERA of 4.50?
|
Yes I did.
|
Did you know?
I did a mock draft but it was taking too long so I quit it. |
I hope you use a similar strategy for this league
|
tried amock last night but after a few rounds some dude bet his max on a scrub and logged out. Totally ruined the whole thing. After that 2-4 more people were pissed and logged out. What a joker that guy was. These drafts take along time and for him todo that.
*grr* |
Couple spots left in my league.
http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo....elect?.scrumb= LID: 168347 PW: lolmets |
So the choice is between OPS, Slugging, and total bases as a hitting cat, and outs or strikeouts for pitching. Any preferences?
|
total bases and strikeouts for me, as it would make it simpler.
Also, $52 on your first pick is something that was very stupid to do. |
I did a mock draft and drafted Pujols and quit
ended up with like 5 1st basemen |
OPS and QS added, TB and IP taken out. 7 hitting and 7 pitching cats. The percentage cats seem better especially in a roto league where everything is worked out over the course of a season.
|
If you leave, yeah your BOT will draft useless players.
|
The AI on the draft is seriously out of whack. While much of the bidding between human players tends to be by $5 increases at the most, the AI will make huge bids.
ie I nominate player X, someone else bids $5, the AI will then bid $45. So the AI might land you Pujols but it might also pay $40 for Christian Guzman. |
Who is in Wadding's league?
|
I found out yesterday that my boss is making me work the next two saturdays, so I get to figure out the cpu draft..yay..
|
Me
CNM Vito Hero Supreme Dragon Spilchuk Droford MVP NerF (I guess?) and someone else...that you, Jerry? |
Still need one more person...
|
That's me, Jerry.

What do you do just rank your players before hand if you're gonna miss a draft? Probably gonna end up missing whoever's draft is on the 21st. Might be back towards the end of it.

Nerf - is that a statement of fact, or of interest in playing?
Just as a heads up the draft for the roto league is tomorrow. At 8pm GMT, 3pm East Coast, Noon Pacific. There is still time to join if anyone is interested. |
I might not make the draft because Daylight Savings confuses me
|
Hope nobody misses the Auction draft. The CPU will fuck things up.

I think its been 4PM for a couple weeks now.
|
fuck 4 pm is a stupid time
probably will only be there for a couple minutes oh well I'm pretty sure I'm gonna screw up majorly when I'm there since I have no idea how to do this |
I think the time change thing muddled things. Because I was sure it was @ noon my time, but I now see it is 1pm
Oh well..... |
Hi,
I haven't changed the time. I think it might be taking into account the changes in DST in North America. I didn't take it into account when posting the times the other day. Sorry about that. Supreme - why is 4pm on a sunday a bad time? - considering that we have to go from the pacific to Europe which is a 8/9 hour time difference I am not sure what time I could have chosen which would have satisfied everyone. |
no its fine I just have stuff to do and I had it figured out around a 3 PM start time
I'll still probably be there for the first hour and a half so hopefully I get a good core before the computer does its thing. |
Im ready
|
The auction draft was fun, even if it took 3 hours. More interesting than the regular draft type.
Anyway, for my team my offense is crazy and my pitching sucks. Have CC and a bunch of question marks. |
That draft was fun. Not sure I'd ever do more than one of those a year due to the time-consuming nature of it, but definitely would be game for doing it again in 2011. If they have them for NFL I'd give that a try as well.
I like my team, starting Sizemore and Jones in OF and then can pick between Hamilton, Ibanez, and Ludwick for the 3rd OF and UTIL spots. Plus I'll stash Beltran on the DL. If he's back healthy and all my OFs play to potential I'll definitely be entertaining trade offers |
I can't see next year doing a traditional draft. Auction is far superior. Hope hockey uses that next season too.
|
It was so much better both in terms of entertainment and rewarding good drafting strategy instead of taking the best available.
|
yeah. You can have Pujols, Arod, Hanley all on your team if you really want. It's so different like you said than just taking the next best player availble. No more random who gets the top players by luck of yahoo draft position.
