Bill Maher on Stan Lee

Adulting, Stan Lee ... Old man yells at kids on lawn.
By Bill Maher

The guy who created Spider-Man and the Hulk has died, and America is in mourning. Deep, deep morning for a man who inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie, I guess. Someone on Reddit posted, “I'm so incredibly grateful I lived in a world that included Stan Lee.” Personally, I’m grateful I lived in a world that included oxygen and trees, but to each his own. Now, I have nothing against comic books – I read them now and then when I was a kid and I was all out of Hardy Boys. But the assumption everyone had back then, both the adults and the kids, was that comics were for kids, and when you grew up you moved on to big-boy books without the pictures.

But then twenty years or so ago, something happened – adults decided they didn’t have to give up kid stuff. And so they pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature. And because America has over 4,500 colleges – which means we need more professors than we have smart people – some dumb people got to be professors by writing theses with titles like Otherness and Heterodoxy in the Silver Surfer. And now when adults are forced to do grown-up things like buy auto insurance, they call it “adulting,” and act like it’s some giant struggle.

I’m not saying we’ve necessarily gotten stupider. The average Joe is smarter in a lot of ways than he was in, say, the 1940s, when a big night out was a Three Stooges short and Carmen Miranda musical. The problem is, we’re using our smarts on stupid stuff. I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important.

And a quote from the Man himself back in the day
Quote:

Let's lay it right on the line. Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. But, unlike a team of costumed super-villains, they can’t be halted with a punch in the snoot, or a zap from a ray gun.

The only way to destroy them is to expose them—to reveal them for the insidious evils they really are. The bigot is an unreasoning hater—one who hates blindly, fanatically, indiscriminately.

If his hang-up is black men, he hates ALL black men. If a redhead once offended him, he hates ALL redheads. If some foreigner beat him to a job, he’s down on ALL foreigners.

He hates people he’s never seen—people he’s never known—with equal intensity—with equal venom.

Now, we’re not trying to say it’s unreasonable for one human being to bug another.

But, although anyone has the right to dislike another individual, it’s totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race—to despise an entire nation—to vilify an entire religion. Sooner or later, we must learn to judge each other on our own merits.

Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill out hearts with tolerance.

For then, and only then, will we be truly worthy of the concept that man was created in the image of God–a God who calls us ALL—His children

Bill Maher being a smug prick is hardly news.

It's a running joke that I'm a commie, and even I think he's a smarmy know it all asshole.

Well, more of a syndicalist than an outright communist. But considering how most Americans consider anyone center-left to be a socialist...

Kalyx triaD 11-17-2018 11:30 PM

I'm pretty sure anyone center left is called a nazi right now.

This is kind of a "...how did you think this was going to go?" moment. Kind of like when he referred to himself as a "house nigger".

The man just died, and he decided this would be a good time to tell the world that they are dumber for appreciating him as somesort of half-ass jab at Trump. This was exactly the kind of thing he'd call out Hannity or O'Riley on if they said the same shit.

Breaking story - Maher still a smug prick, tries to make relevant story into fodder for his agenda.

In other news, the sky is blue, the grass is green and Madonna had a lot of sex in the 80's.

Jesus, that burn from Gaiman though.
