Playstation 5

I was thinking about picking up a PS4 and some games with some of my Trump charity. But I know PS5 is suppose to be coming out this fall or winter.

Does anyone else feel skeptical about that projected release time? What games are they going to launch it with? I guess Cyber Punk should be coming out around that time. I've been figuring the Last of Us 2 is getting pushed back so it can launch with PS5. I've seen people speculate that Horizon Zero Dawn sequel might be announced.

Also, they havent confirmed backwards compatibility which would be a huge issue for me. It's part of the reason i bought a PS3 first. There were a ton of games i wanted to buy and play. I have about 30 PS3 games and i've only played like 6 and completed. lol.

PS4 has quite a few titles I'd like to play also and if Sony fucks up again and doesnt to backwards compatibility, then I'll have the PS4 for somewhat cheap. If they do have backwards compatibility, then at least i'd have the games when i get around to buying a PS5.

I've also considered a switch, but PS4 just has more games that i really want to play.

Anyways, what have you heard or think about the PS5. I have a hunch that it will get delayed into 2021. I read somewhere they were still having really bad overheating issues with it. Who knows.

ClockShot 04-16-2020 06:50 PM

To answer some of your questions:

It's backwards compatible. But just with the PS4. No PS3 or 2 games will be played.

Today's news in regards to consoles is on the grim side is that roughly 5-6 million PS5s will be made in the first 2 quarters come launch time due to the 'rona. But Sony is saying it's because they're still kicking around the price an the components will be hard to come by. So unless you get a preorder the second you hear about it, they're likely gonna be tough to come by. 7.5 million PS4s were sold in the first 2 quarters of launch.

I think they'll launch when they're supposed to. If not a tad later. They'll no doubt want to be right there with Microsoft when their new Xbox launches.

Launch titles? No idea.

Sepholio 04-23-2020 09:43 AM

They will absolutely launch just before or on Black Friday so they can push those sales going into the holiday season. The lower console numbers at launch is them copycatting what Nintendo did with the Switch launch to artificially drive up demand and build more hype for the system.

There's been a couple games announced for the launch window, but nothing from the major 1st party franchises. Godfall is the best looking confirmed launch game. Speculating that Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima will also have PS5 versions as launch titles. Usual slate of 3rd party games will prob be announced too, like CoD, Battlefield and Assassins Creed. Maybe Cyberpunk as well.

Sepholio 04-23-2020 09:50 AM

Theres a big PS5 event streaming online next month though, will prob get the deets on some of the launch titles there as well as the official unveiling of the system itself.

All that said, unless you absolute need a PS4 right now out of sheer boredom, I'd wait for the 5 due to the backwards compatibility with the 4. Unless you can catch a really good deal on the 4 used right now or something.

Sepholio 04-23-2020 09:58 AM

Those overheating issues with it were bullshit rumors being passed around xbox fanboy sites btw and then rereported by minor gaming sites. It literally all comes from one anonymous reddit account saying "I KNOW A BUNCH OF DEVZ AND THEY SAY IT GETS TOO HOT".

Honestly dunno how anyone can even report those rumors with a straight face. Prob why none of the major gaming outlets have reported it. The devs at this point are most likely not working with the final consoles, they are working with development kits that are not indicative of the final consoles exact specs or form factor. If there were actual launch PS5s out in any capacity then we would have the final specs and pictures of the console itself by now. Nobody can keep anything quiet these days.

OH MY GOD PS5!

That thing is going to land on the moon before space X does.

Emperor Smeat 06-11-2020 09:41 PM

The console sort of looks like a wireless router or one of those fancy portable chargers for devices.

Think my sister has a charger that looks somewhat similar to it. I almost broke it one time thinking the sides were openable or was just a fancy looking protective cover.

Aesthetics are meaninglessness to me. Need a price

Fignuts 06-12-2020 05:17 AM

I want to play the the cyber punk kitty cat simulator.

drave 06-12-2020 08:51 AM

The design looks neat..... but does it help it cool better?

Looks like a pain in the ass to clean dust out of..

ClockShot 06-12-2020 10:28 AM

The white is nice. Hides the dust better.

My concern too is cooling. I don't want the machine to sound like a jet engine when its running a little hot

Fignuts 06-12-2020 01:49 PM

The blue parts look like vents which wrap around the console.

OssMan 06-12-2020 03:01 PM

Nothing from the presentation intrigued me too much, the cat simulator looks cool and maybe there was one other but idk. Will prolly buy it eventually when they announce persona 6 or ff7 remake 2

Destor 06-12-2020 03:16 PM

I never buy consoles at launch. Theres a good 18 months where things are multigenerational so i use that time to find a good used deal

Sony's VP of UX Design recently claimed that the PS5's user interface will be a "100% overhaul" of the PS4's user interface.

It's tough (and maybe pointless) to imagine what this might look like. It's tempting to assume it'll take cues from the PS4, but does overhaul mean improvement/evolution or does it mean entirely new thing? Are we splitting hairs between the terms redesign and overhaul? It's best to wait and see. MacLaurin says an OS and UI reveal is coming soon.

On the other end of the console competition, Microsoft isn't revamping the UI for the Xbox Series X. Instead it'll have the same interface as the Xbox One, but with an emphasis on speed and performance for the Series X. That checks out given how Microsoft is trying to blend the Xbox ecosystem into one blended, continuous experience across all devices. Two consoles, two different approaches.

I actually think it looks really good.

I always liked that kind of aesthetic though, always bought weird looking cases when building my PCs.

Way better than the Xbox Series X design, an effin block, really?

M-A-G 06-19-2020 09:57 PM

I can't be alone in thinking it's too soon for a new piece of hardware, right?

Fignuts 06-20-2020 02:20 PM

Not really. PS4 came out around 7 years ago. That's par for the course in terms of console lifespan.

ClockShot 08-27-2020 07:50 PM

Sony giving gamers an opportunity to be selected to pre-order a PS5 through their website before they open up the window.

Just enter your PSN gamer tag and you're set. Here's the link.

I think the problem is they put the Pro out more recently but I think it was understood the Pro wasn't worth buying

I want a ps5 but I need a new TV. Plus havent plsyed much because it hurts to try to use my bad left hand so it almost makes no sense. Yet I bought madden 21 lol

According to a report from VideoGamesChronicle, PS5 is currently rumored to be launching during the week of November 13th while Microsoft's Xbox Series X is currently rumored to be launching a week earlier.

Quote:

According to VGC’s development and retail sources, mid-November is exactly when PlayStation 5 is most likely to land. In the UK, we understand that PlayStation has already booked significant marketing spend for the seven days commencing on Friday, November 13. Multiple retail sources have also told us that a launch during this window would fit within their expectations.

Development and retail sources also agree that Xbox will launch first. Microsoft has told developers to plan towards a launch in the very first week of the November, we understand, which would also give it wiggle room to potentially slip into the second week and still launch ahead of Sony. Xbox sources indicated that the platform holder is also expecting PS5 to arrive within the week commencing November 13.
The report also mentioned the reason why both Sony and Microsoft have been unwilling to give any solid launch details is due to both fearing production and retail plans for their upcoming console launches might get wrecked by the second wave of the coronavirus.

PS5's backwards compatibility feature is currently rumored to only support PS4 games based on a a recent update to Ubisoft's support page that was deleted afterwards.

While this isn't the be-all and end-all on the subject (and it sure would be nice to have clarity from Sony), according to a Ubisoft support page, backward compatibility "will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games."

[Update: After widespread circulation, Ubisoft removed that sentence from the support page.]

The meaning behind that wording could be interpreted in a few different ways, so for comparison's sake, it's worth looking at the equivalent support page for Xbox Series X. As Ubisoft puts it, backward compatibility "will be available for supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox titles" on Xbox Series X.

The lack of info on both of these systems is strange to me. It feels like two companies who know they raced to get a system out and they might no be ready so they're hoping the other blinks and delays launch.

Chatter around the 'net is that Sony is going to reveal everything Wednesday. Launch date, price, preorder into etc. It's Playstation Anniversary Day.

Keep your inboxes refreshed and your retail sites on standby that day.

Not sure about Microsoft but Sony had been rumored for a long while to be having issues trying to get the unit cost for the PS5 down and being very worried the coronavirus will wreck the PS5's launch for why they haven't announced a price nor launch date yet.

Like there was speculation at one point the PS5 might be costing $600+ because of all the expensive parts and tech Sony was putting into it.

November 12 release

$499 for the disc drive version
$399 for digital

Emperor Smeat 09-16-2020 05:57 PM

Based on the pricing for PS5 launch games, two more games join the pile of next gen games getting the $10 price hike at least for launch.
