DC Universe

DC has announced they are creating their own streaming service.

https://www.dccomics.com/dcuniverse

Already announced a Swamp Thing live action show by James Wan, the live action Titans show, animated Harley Quinn show, and an animated Young Justice.

Also a "Metropolis" show about Lex Luthor.

I don't know if I see this doing too well. There are already so many comic book TV shows out there, not sure I want to pay a subscription to watch even more.

Only way I see this being successful is if they also include a "Marvel Unlimited" type thing where subscribing to DC Universe also gets you access to a large archive of digital comics to read.

Simple Fan 05-03-2018 11:30 AM

Prey interested in the Swamp Thing series. Not sure about Titans though.

Lock Jaw 05-03-2018 11:34 AM

Titans seems like it is probably gonna turn out like that Birds of Prey show.

This is just a set photo, but I have no idea how lighting/post-production is supposed to make this "Starfire" look any better:

(Also pictured Beast Boy and Raven)

Simple Fan 05-03-2018 11:37 AM

Starfire is black? Beast Boy and Raven don't look bad. Alot of hair coloring on that set it looks like.

Kalyx triaD 05-03-2018 02:32 PM

Starfire looks terrible. And I tend to be lenient on set photos.

Sixx 05-03-2018 02:34 PM

Starfire looks like she's waiting for a car to pull over so she can give "daddy" his money.

Simple Fan 05-03-2018 02:52 PM

Starfire also having curly hair is weird. The actress looks alot better with strait hair I think which would tie into Starfire better.

Lock Jaw 05-03-2018 03:03 PM

Just read that the "Metropolis" series is going back to "redevelopment".

The original premise was: "Set in the gleaming City of Tomorrow before the arrival of Superman, Metropolis focuses on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate “fringe science,” and expose the city’s dark secrets."

Dunno if redevelopment means that will change......

Kind of sounds like that Powerless show which was just bad. DC seems to be on a prequel fad right now with this, Gotham, and Krypton.

Sixx 05-03-2018 03:57 PM

Powers was a damn good comic book, though.

Whoever decided to cast Sharlto Copley in that show is a lunatic.

Different show, Powerless was a show on NBC set in the DC universe with regular people. Occasionally would have a D list hero make a short appearance. I don't even think they finished season 1 before they pulled it.

Sixx 05-03-2018 04:19 PM

Oh. I read that as Powers, not Powerless. My bad.

Simple Fan 05-03-2018 04:30 PM

Hadn't heard of Powers but I looked it up, seems interesting.

Fignuts 05-03-2018 04:52 PM

Is this going to be a part of the DCU or Arrowverse? I assume Arrowverse.

Sixx 05-03-2018 05:05 PM

I assume neither.

Sixx 05-03-2018 05:05 PM

But Arrowverse if anything. Sure as fuck not DCU.

So 3 separate universes now? What the fuck are they doing?

Sixx 05-03-2018 05:12 PM

They're going for more universes than comic books.

Sixx 05-03-2018 05:13 PM

Ok, I don't know how many universes does DC Comics have. Marvel has a fuckload.

Which series, Titans or Swamp Thing? I could see Swamp Thing being in the DCU with Wan being attached to it. I think Titans is its own thing though and not connected to anything. I thought Krypton was supposed to be connected to Man of Steel but its not unless the time traveling aspect has screwed things up.

Honestly DC does a shit job when trying to connect everything. I think they'd be better off just having things in their own universes. Marvel hasn't even done that well with having TV and movies connected so they're better off not trying it.

Destor 05-03-2018 05:55 PM

Im not dipping into this app just because i dont want there to be an app for everything

Fignuts 05-03-2018 06:09 PM

In other news, the Teen Titans Go! movie continues to look better than anything else they've got coming.

Lock Jaw 05-03-2018 11:11 PM

I've been watching random Teen Titans GO! clips on YouTube as of late, and it seems like it actually is a pretty entertaining show. If I were still a kid, I could see myself totally watching it after school on the regular.

Lock Jaw 05-03-2018 11:14 PM

Full trailer if anyone wants:

Kalyx triaD 05-03-2018 11:22 PM

There was a clip where they visit the Batcave which was just brilliant.

Lock Jaw 05-16-2018 02:52 PM

A Doom Patrol series has been announced for this as well, that seems like it will share continuity with the Titans series at least.

Also an Alfred Pennyworth show has been announced for some cable network I've never heard of before.

Lock Jaw 06-08-2018 02:22 PM

Ah, ok. They announced that they are looking for a late August launch.

Also said that there will be an extensive collection of digital comics available via the service.

So I may now give it some thought!

Ezra 06-22-2018 10:13 PM

Death of Superman was pretty good. Probably could have stood to be a touch longer to help develop some storylines a bit more bit really well done. Superman is the way superman should be as well. Ready for the sequel.

Lock Jaw 07-19-2018 09:44 AM

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-PPofXaJ4go" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Price of the service announced at $7.99 a month, or $74.99 for an annual subscription.

It seems like the digital comics won't be really extensive, but just be a few titles that change quarterly, so you can't really read it at your leisure.

Kalyx triaD 07-19-2018 09:52 AM

...Okay.

Destor 07-19-2018 09:55 AM

Visually it looks bad. Same dark saturation that the DC films suffer from. Lighting is awful. I dunno. I like the tone of the writing though.

slik 07-19-2018 10:18 AM

The trailer for the Titans series was bad.

Looks ultra low budget and ultra grimdark. Disappointing.

Simple Fan 07-19-2018 10:43 AM

Everything looks pretty good to me except Starfire.

Kalyx triaD 07-19-2018 11:08 AM

Call me old fashioned but under no circumstance should Robin say fuck let alone "fuck Batman". Keep the post-Dynamic Duo angst, sure, but what the hell kind of stunt writing is that? I predict it'll be removed or changed when it launches. In general Teen Titans are not the characters I'd do this with.

slik 07-19-2018 12:06 PM

Grant Morrison to write Green Lantern starting in November. I think this sounds good.

Quote:

Green Lantern #1 will launch in November, starring Hal Jordan. With Morrison quoted as saying “The basic concept is that [Hal Jordan] is like a space cop that patrols a sector of the universe where anything can happen. We’ve made it more like a police procedural… It’s an intergalactic police force, but instead of guns they’ve got wishing rings that make their thoughts come true and turn into plasma… “We’re doing Hal Jordan where, you know he’s a good cop, but is he really a good guy? And we’re looking into his relationships and how he deals with people. And also the fact that, if you’ve got a job as a space cop, it’s hard to be stuck on the planet Earth. He has other lives on other planets. We’re gonna be looking into a lot of things that I don’t think we’ve seen a lot with Hal Jordan before.”

Kalyx triaD 07-19-2018 12:23 PM

Of course Hal is a good guy.

I predict there's 0% of your prediction coming about

slik 07-19-2018 12:51 PM

I like DC's new, more grounded initiative they seem to be taking. Getting back to characters, conflict and relationships.

Tom King doing that in Batman r/n
Brian Bendis doing that in Superman r/n
Grant Morrison going to be doing that in Green Lantern soon
