Rate the Game: Week 73
Who's ready for another round of this shindig?!? Let's brew that bacon, scramble some cereal, and fry up the coffee this morning to prepare for week 73 of Rate the Game! It's part of a balanced breakfast! Speaking of which, let's dig into some nutritional information as we need to find Portal's spot on the leaderboard after last week's affair. GLaDOS, Chell, and the Companion Cube seemed to resonate fairly well so let's see where all of that love gets it....

Thinking with portals, indeed. But what's on tap this time around? Well let's dive into another breakfast staple, THE BOWL OF DOOM! Take it away .gif....
via GIPHY
Well we go back to a console we haven't touched in a while, the Nintendo 64, with this week's game. This is yet another product from the union of Nintendo and Rare, the 007-esque spy-thriller adventure, Perfect Dark! I remember the hype surrounding this one but ultimately how did it live up to all of the hoopla in your mind? Is it a Nintendo 64 treasure? Is Joanna Dark every bit an iconic hero in the veins of Lara Croft? What say you, good people of TPWW? Rate and discuss and share and rant and stuff. Until next week.... |
Side note, with this being number 73 we have officially reached the point where we're one year away from wrapping this up. It's a good feeling to know what I'll be doing in 52 weeks' time. :)

Haven't played it.

5, a 5........ a fuckin 555555555!!!!!
Remember loving the everliving shit outta this game. I also remember being annoyed that an aliens name was "elvis", but whatever. Amazing game, excited for the new one coming out. |
Played it only a handful of times and hated it....
|
The game was better than the system it was on. The N64 could barely run it but it was still a phenominal game that went above and beyond it's spiritual predecessor
|
Indeed.
Even the 360 Perfect Dark they attempted was alright. Could have been TONS better, but with today's systems and tech. they can easily do everything they aspired to long ago. The new Perfect Dark will be great |
The biggest strike against this sucker was the need to have the Expansion Pak in order to play the campaign, something nobody told me about and I don't remember reading in any publication. So you can imagine my level of pissed off-edness when I got around to renting it, taking it home, and discovering that I was basically boned. And there was no way my parents were going to shell out for it, especially for a rental.
That aside, it is a fantastic game. I'm wondering if the separation of Rare and Nintendo was something that put a hamper on this franchise because I would have figured there would have been like 5 games under this banner by now. |
Multiplayer was fantastic. Loved how you could create a character.
|
Counter Ops was also very fun.

They definitely talked about it. Pretty sure it was on the box too ya nutter. |
My local rental place wasn't really keen on the same standards as Blockbuster. :o
|
Fair enough. I may have won a 12 month sub to Gamepro too, which I freakin LOVED when I was younger.
Remember the "gamer mag" wars between EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) and GamePro magazine, or at least it seemed that way. |
I remember it being on the game box but I'm not sure B. Buster gave those or the booklets out.
Ours used to give out Expansion packs until people just didn't return them. Quote:

To be fair, Perfect Dark did, in fact, not feature Oddjob.

Took everything from goldeneye and made it better, while adding its own cool stuff. |

I remember in the early to mid 2000s there was these magazines with just about every cheat code imaginable. "Tips & Tricks". Even then it seemed kinda weird to read a magazine for codes when you could just look them up online (mind you this was like 2003-2006).
https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/c...pg?format=750w |
Are cheat codes even a thing nowadays? I can't remember the last time I ever used one.
|
I think I used one for GTA 5 once.... flying or something.
|
Tips and Tricks was the shit. I used it long before the interwebs was a thing for "regular households".
Also remember printing off guides from gamefaqs.com. Used to be a top notch gaming site. |
So Perfect Dark was set in the year 2023. This is most certainly not the future I was promised.
|
I prefer the short dark-haired version myself.

Never played it. Came out right after I sold my N64 and all my games at the time so I could join the PC Master Race. I was pretty down on Nintendo by that point though. Was always a Nintendo kid but the N64, although having a few gems, had a pretty piss poor library for what I wanted to play by that time. And the virtual boy had already ruined a lot of my goodwill for the big N too. Made the leap to playstation and PC and sold off all my nintendo stuff.
|
I can relate somewhat. Was definitely in Nintendo camp but was low-key jealous of people who owned a Playstation. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was THE main reason I wanted to get one. I mean, both consoles had quality titles, just depended on what you were looking for. It certainly felt like all of the "cool" stuff was over on the Playstation.
|
Also a big LOL at the Saturn being treated like the redheaded stepchild in this discussion.
|
Hah, found them!
https://i.imgur.com/nVfQSjc.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/VD3e8i8.jpg It sounded really cool and coming off of Goldeneye it was certainly anticipated over on my end. |
fuck yeah. i miss those m-a-gs :(
all filler no killer anymore. AND NO I DONT WANT YOUR E-M-A-G god damnit |
Game Informer is honestly still pretty good.

Haha! Forgot about Darth Clark.
Game Informer is exactly what I was talking about with their e-mag crap. They incessantly tried to get me to switch, even giving me free 6 months. I just don't find it as good as the actual paper magazine, maybe I'm just old. Feels just like "another website" with the digital version. |

I used to get EGM, not sure they exist anymore.
