But it is time for another Rate the Game and you all are excited about it, right? Right? Well, anyways, this is Rate the Game: Week 79: this time it's not Rate the Game: Week 78! Oof, how about that? Half-Life 2 performs fairly well but it just barely, JUST BARELY, eeks out ahead of its predecessor, claiming the number 34 spot for itself with a 3.85 overall rating. Looks like those two are going to be spending some quality together, barring any surprises. Could this week's game create a divide between those two? Or better yet, land itself in our elite top ten? Let's take a look at what we have in store for us this week...

Not another sequel but a franchise-starter nonetheless. This week we're taking a look at the neo-noir, third-person action cop drama, Max Payne! This baby got a shit ton of praise and awards, including a BAFTA but what's the skinny with you guys? How does it fare with you? Let's dive in and rate and discuss and enjoy another week!

Distinctly remember this being one of the coolest PC games I was able to run on my rig at the time.

I remember getting to the end of the cult level where you find that shit in the back of a church (? memory fails me, might be wrong here) but damn what an epic shootout.

The game took a twisted turn when you had to go through the blood-ridden nightmare levels with your baby fucking screaming over and over. That was tough, but I also felt like they did a great job with the psyche of a broken father.

Never played any of the sequels.

I'm just happy that no live-action movie adaptation of Max Payne exists. :)

4 feels fair. Fun game that brings back a lot of memories but not quite as classic as Max Payne 2.

Never played it.

i dont love half points so 4 seems right since its def closer to 4 than 3. its certainly above average. i love noir and this game nails the ambiance. also the bullet time mechanic was super fresh when the game dropped even though the industry quickly over used it. very enjoyable game all the same.

Thought it was ok but nothing special

I could never wrap my head around bullet time. In games where it was a feature, like F.E.A.R., it always felt like I was slowed down, too. I always found myself never really bothering with it.

i think Payne got it right. made scoring head shots on a wave of baddies with one clip in a few seconds feel like you were playing a scene from the matrix

Wet had an interesting take on it where you could try stringing as much mayhem together as possible with your moves in order to score big. It was a nice break from the mindlessness of the rest of the game.

Savio 10-08-2021 10:28 AM

Max Payne was the one with those weird bomb puzzles right?

M-A-G 10-08-2021 11:46 AM

Isn't that in the second game?

M-A-G 10-10-2021 10:53 PM

I had a better pic of this because I distinctly remember photographing it but this is the best I could find. You can spot the Max Payne 3 figure on the shelf up there in the back. It was my friend's who had made a big stink over pre-ordering the game and getting it as a bonus because he was a big Max Payne fan. To this date, he still hasn't finished the third game even though it would take him about an hour to finish from where he left off. :|
