You just had to do it didn't you?

Chris Benoit takes it at least offed himself plus his brain was cheese

Snuka was just an abusive dick

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-03-2018 03:55 PM

Amazing LOL

Evil Vito 01-03-2018 03:59 PM

Not a bad argument

Snuka was a huge fucking star. Benoit was not. Again, if drawing power is a main factor in these things, Snuka just about puts it out of reach there alone. Also, both of their brains may in fact have been cheese.

That can be a main factor in these things if you want it to be.

For me I usually boil it down to "who did I want to see more?" and in this one the answer for me is clearly Chris Benoit. So Benoit gets my vote.

#1-norm-fan 01-03-2018 04:24 PM

Mine is usually "Who would be a bigger draw if put in the exact same situation?"

Though let's be honest. Most of the time, people state objective criteria for these things but always end up just voting for who they like more.

Big Vic 01-03-2018 04:44 PM

Winner vs José "Invader 1" González

Shisen Kopf 01-03-2018 04:56 PM

Snuka was framed. Prob by the same guy who framed OJ

#1-norm-fan 01-03-2018 05:03 PM

Also, if it wasn't for Jimmy Snuka, there would be no Mick Foley in wrestling.

More importantly, there would be no Deuce 'n' Domino.

Bad News Gertner 01-03-2018 05:24 PM

Snuka vs Muraco and Snuka vs Piper were two of the biggest feuds of the 80's. Snuka was a phenomenon in the WWF in 82. He was must see T.V and probably the biggest draw in wrestling between 82-83. Snuka by a mile.

Fignuts 01-03-2018 05:32 PM

How many of todays stars were influenced by chris benoit? Doubt many would admit it now for obvious reasons, but I'm guessing a lot.

I never thought it was fair to label benoit with the "vanilla midget" label. He had an intensity in everything he did, which was as much of a defining characteristic as his ring work, and made him stand out from other workrate guys.

His promos may not have been as memorable as his peers, but when he started talking, you knew it was benoit promo, which is an important point to make because a lot of guys promos today, all sound the same.

Benoit worked during a time where we were spoiled for choice with unique, larger than life personalities. If he were around today, he would stand out a lot more than most of the current crop of talent.

Snuka may have been a bigger star in his era, but for me benoit was better in every other way.

KIRA 01-03-2018 05:39 PM

Complete failures as human beings aside wrestling wise I still gotta go with Benoit the only thing he lacked was the ability to talk(and Snuka was 80s 90s shouty promo

You could buy Benoit as a brawler a technician and a high flyer(in fact it helped kill him)

He was a complete package. Hes literally the only small guy I thought had a chance at beating Big Show in WCW he was that ferocious

We have DB partly due to Benoit

Maluco 01-03-2018 05:41 PM

Agree totally with Fignuts. Benoit will forever be underrated for how we went out, but he was great in the ring and the current WWE roster would look completely different if it weren't for guys like him.

Snuka was a big star in his day but Benoit helped revolutionise the business and was ahead of his time.

It's a really pity what happened because his legacy would be massive today, but now, rightly so, he can only really be remembered for one thing

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-03-2018 05:41 PM

Well in fairness if Benoit was around today he would pop for wellness violations and get fired. Or he would be 195 pounds and be on 205 live.

But the style guys work would be vastly different without him.

So THAT'S why we've got a business full of Benoits and no real stars nowadays!?! Goddammit.

Same height as current WWE champion, AJ Styles, and considerably taller than Daniel Bryan. Because culture of the businesshas changed, he and his family might still be alive.

He made it to the top in a stacked era. He would easily be a main eventer today. He was too good not to be.

Guys like Rollins, Ambrose, Nakamura, Styles, Rusev, Big E, Reigns would all be stars if they could write at all.

#1-norm-fan 01-03-2018 05:55 PM

Listen, the writing is shit but let's not just use it as a reason to call everyone would-be stars. Also, I don't know if any of those guys were influence by Benoit.

Arguably yeah, but you have guys like Macho Man only a few short years ahead doing similar stuff, only better. I think Benoit would easily complete with even the very best guys today in 2017.

But yeah, hard to argue about what Snuka was doing in early 80's

I've never seen a move get over in the 80's like the Superfly Splash. Go watch a 1982 WWF show. Snuka sticks out like a sore thumb. He was the biggest star in wrestling.

Not at all. Go watch one of his matches against Muraco or Backlund. Or check out his tag matches in Jim Crockett Promotions. Also Benoit style is more watchable because he died only like ten years ago. Snuka's peak was 40 years ago wrestling against guys who could barely move.. Wrestling changes over time. Benoit wasn't a tenth over to the degree Snuka was. Not even in his league.

Obviously you can't know for sure. But writing is by far the biggest issue. Can't throw out every guy who has great matches and a potential personality as being sub par just because they got their break in a shitty era.

The style of wrestling today is undeniably influenced by guys like Benoit. Daniel Bryan was most popular guy "new" of the last 10 years and his style is very obviously influenced by Benoit.

I actually will do that, love older wrestling. If you can post a link to a match of his that makes the point, I would love to see it.

It's his most famous match. Check out the crowd pop for the Superfly Splash off the cage. Foley, Bubba Ray Dudley and Dreamer were in attendance for this match as kids. Match starts at 10 minutes in.

Hot thread

Bad News Gertner 01-03-2018 06:07 PM

Snuka is a victim of the WWF acting like wrestling started in 1984 when Hogan won the title. Snuka was over in 83 to Hogan's level in 1984. The feud with Muraco in 1983 was the hottest feud in wrestling. It drew 25,000 people to MSG for that cage match. Backlund was the champion and his popularity in 1983 wasn't even close to Snuka

Didnt the murder derail the push?

I'm just saying the guys on your list being potential stars (I assumed you named them because they were the prime examples) probably doesn't have a lot of Benoit influence. Maybe Rollins.

Bryan I can see obviously. He's probably the most popular "new" guy of the last 10 years but that's not really saying much because again, there hasn't been much competition. And I'd rather have 1 Mick Foley than 100 Daniel Bryans.

Sure did. Vince actually hired Buddy Rogers to travel with Snuka to try and keep him out of trouble. Snuka would have been world Champ for sure in 1983.

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-03-2018 06:13 PM

D bry was as awesome as Foley just in a different way.
