Marvel Universe Thread

Iron Man:

I know this has it's own thread, but I plan on updating these two topics indefinitely as comic movies appear to be more of a stable in the film industry. Eventually I'll simply make a Comic Movie News Thread but I'm a freak about organization. Anyway, Iron Man as finished filming a little while ago which gives them close to a year of post-production. They closed filming in Vegas; though this isn't a hint to the film's story (= the ending may not be set in Vegas). Terrance Howard will play James Rhodes in case some of you didn't know. Rhodes is the civilian identity of War Machine, though you can bet he'll figure in the sequel with a cliff-hanger introduction at the end of this film.

Iron-Man cast: Terrance Howard-James Rhodes/War Machine, Gwyneth Paltrow-Virginia "Pepper" Potts, Robert Downey Jr.-Tony Stark/Iron Man, Shaun Toub-Yin Sen (he is NOT The Mandarin)

Spidey 4:

I suppose Spidey 3's financial success is attributed to Venom's inclusion and they'll add more recent villains as a result. If this is true, and I love the series so far, this will be the beginning of Spider-Man's spiral into the Batman and Robin effect, increasing an aspect of the last film not knowing it worked in a shot-in-the-dark sense. Sam Raimi also expressed ideas of using The Vulture or Electro (more classic villains). I doubt he'll actually have anything to do with Spidey 4. JK Simmons, Bryce Howard, and Dylan Baker (Conners/The Lizard) will return with new leads for Peter Parker and Mary Jane, I'm thinking.

More to come.

Kane Knight 06-26-2007 09:06 PM

Rhodes could simply get his own spinoff.

Kalyx triaD 06-26-2007 09:14 PM

Something about War Machine I liked better than Iron Man, he seems so ready to battle.

Kane Knight 06-26-2007 11:36 PM

Negores like to fight.

Blitz 06-26-2007 11:39 PM

Was there not supposed to be an Iron Fist movie? What happened there?

diothoir 06-26-2007 11:51 PM

Robert Downey Jr looks a bit like a yuppie Jack Sparrow there. :$

Kane Knight 06-26-2007 11:52 PM

Kalyx triaD 06-27-2007 12:07 AM

Ray Park was pegged to be the Immortal Iron Fist, but after his casting was announced (a good 4 years ago) nothing else was heard.

Yeah I remember that. I thought I'd heard something about it recently tho.

The Vulture. Yea, that'll go over well in movies. Dude wasnt even halfway decent in the fuckin comics. Raimi needs to read more books on Spidey other than the Sinister Six saga.

Why not?

Luke Cage:

They're still doing it. Tyrese is still the top man to star even though he ain't sign a bloody thing. John Singleton's set to direct.

Kane Knight 07-04-2007 11:32 AM

How about Iron Fist? Anything on that?

Kalyx triaD 07-04-2007 02:40 PM

I afraid to say it may have fallen into development Hell.

Don't forget the addition of Sam Jackson as Nic Fury in Iron Man.

Reavant 07-05-2007 05:51 PM

im all for black actors so dont get me wrong but why is Nick Fury being played by sam jackson and why was the green mile guy the kingpin?

Joey Slugs 07-05-2007 05:58 PM

Sam Jackson is playing Fury because in the "Ultimates" universe... Sam Jackson literally is Nick Fury. Marvel is paying him for his likeness...

Reavant 07-05-2007 07:40 PM

oh... my bad ... i never followed the ultimates in terms of the xmen that much... just spiderman.

Reavant 07-05-2007 07:41 PM

So was that the same deal with the kingpin then?

Lock Jaw 07-05-2007 09:40 PM

No, Kingpin they just figured that people would be more scared of a large black man than a fat white guy. Or so my theory goes.

Things been quiet on the Marvel side of things, but straight from the 'Con...

Silver Surfer:

His spin-off film will pick up where FF2 left off, and explain things only hinted at in the movie. We'll see his origin, as well as what he's doing currently. There seems to be hint that a better (or atleast alternate) presentation of Galactus will be in the movie. The few Surfer comics out display pretty wild visuals of the galaxy; how much is this movie gonna cost, I wonder...

Iron Man:

Jon Favreau came to Comic Con with 4mins of footage from Iron Man. Details of the footage had some scenes of Stark building variations of his suit, and ended with Iron Man facing off against 2 F-14s in the sky. Aside from that shot, says the director, most of the action will be practical effects. Stan Winston's studio will be handling the practical stuff, you know... the Terminator guys?

Should be interesting.

Kalyx triaD 07-28-2007 06:21 PM

Spectacular Spider-Man:

Its gonna be a cool cartoon.

Kalyx triaD 08-09-2007 06:46 PM

Thor:

Matthew Vaughn may or may not direct. He's the one who was gonna take over X3 from Bryan Singer way back when. He did Stardust and some other stuff.

Punisher 2:

The second Punisher moves ahead with a new lead (Ray Stevenson) and a direction toward a grittier story. Frank castle faces comic villain Jigsaw in this one. I don't see what was wrong with Thomas jane's work but whatever.

Skippord 08-09-2007 08:14 PM

Thomas Jane quit

G 08-10-2007 08:27 PM

so is there not going to be a xmen 4 with the last one called the last stand?

Kalyx triaD 08-11-2007 12:02 AM

You have seen the ending to X3? There's enough characters and tales from the books to warrent 10 more movies.

If there is no 4, it probably has more to do with the cast than the title.

Actually I read after the 3rd one came out that their was plans of doing another X-Men...but instead of focusing on the likes of Cyclops...Storm...and Wolverine, It will instead focus on the younger kids like Iceman, Pyro, Kittie Pryde and people like that.

They mentioned that they would try to get the older people in their doing small cameos but that would be it.

That was the last that I heard about it and that was right after the 3rd hit theaters. Its probably changed by now.

Danny Electric 08-11-2007 07:18 PM

they'll be a fourth just for the reason that it will make money

Reavant 08-11-2007 10:57 PM

isnt there a movie just about wolverine in the works as well?

Fignuts 08-11-2007 11:14 PM

Wolverine and Magneto both have spin-offs in the works. SO it is likely we will not see X4 for a good 5 years. Maybe 10.

You kidding? Between Jackman and Berre's salaries? It'll need to make 500 million dollars just to break even. And that's not counting the rest of the cast, special effects, wardobe, and main characters kill.

Not to mention JAckson is in keeping with the Ultimates version for Fury.

I don't know why they made him black for the new comics, but it's not like it's out of character.

I'm just worried instead of playing Fury, he's going to play Sammy Jackson like he's done a lot recently.

http://movies.ign.com/articles/816/816483p1.html

August 28, 2007 - The official publicity site for Lionsgate Films has revealed that the title for the Punisher sequel will be Punisher: War Zone. No release date for the Lexi Alexander-directed sequel was given; the film is only listed as "coming soon."

Earlier reports had pegged The Punisher 2 as being called The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank. The Punisher: War Zone was also the name of a Marvel comic book series that ran from 1992-95, as well as the title for a previous film sequel screenplay penned by Jonathan Hensleigh, who also directed the 2004 Punisher film.

Ray Stevenson stars as Frank Castle in this film, succeeding Thomas Jane in the role. The screenplay was written by Nick Santora, Kurt Sutter, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. Filming begins this fall in Montreal for a release sometime in 2008.

Mr Regal 08-29-2007 11:35 AM

How odd, i was just about to post the same news.

The story of the film has quite a lot going on as well, they are looking to make it more realistict than the first one....no kevin nash then.

Ray Stevenson is a good choice for the lead imo.

Kalyx triaD 08-30-2007 01:46 AM

Magneto:

They're in the scouting and budgeting phase now. It's not so much a Magneto thing as it'll cover Xavier as well.

Rammsteinmad 08-30-2007 02:36 AM

Can't wait for the Punisher film. I really enjoyed the first one and the character is one of my faves. My only complaint is no Tom Jane. I thought he was an excellent choice for Frank Castle. Oh well...

As for the Magneto one, it'll be cool if they got Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan together again. I thought those two worked well together. :y:

D Mac 08-30-2007 05:41 AM

Never heard of Ray Stevenson.

Why Swing When You Can Fly A Mech:

Tobey M of Spidey fame is set to produce and star in a Robotech project, so let's talk about that even though it isn't Marvel...

Tobey's very interested in it's 'rich mythology' and sees it as a 'sci-fi epic' in the making. This ofcourse puts his Spider-Man future in question, on top of rumors already stating that new leads were in the mix for Spidey 4. In either case geeks will get their fill of Tobey in the future.

MVP 09-07-2007 03:30 PM

Dolph Lundgren was the best Punisher. Too bad he's close to 70 now.

For Vaughn, "My only concern initially was that it's another fantasy film, but it's different in the sense that it's a superhero film set in the world of fantasy. You've got Thor and Odin and it's set in Asgard -- it's not going to be like Lord of the Rings or even Narnia. I think it's important to keep it comic book. We're not doing the Thor of Norse mythology. We're doing the Marvel Thor.

I wonder how Nick Fury will cameo this one.

Spidey Reboot:

Sam Raimi has been meeting with Marvel and Sony execs about taking the Spider-Man franchise in new directions. They've been meeting with various writers who are giving their own spin on where the series can go from where it ended.

What better way to abandon unfinished story arcs and hire hot young actors who'd do a Spidey movie for slave pay. But I suppose I'm being spiteful over the current climate of comic-movies. It can be frustrating...

Anyway, Raimi may be in the other geeks target sights as he's expressed interest in directing the LotR prequel The Hobbit, if Peter Jackson doesn't return.

BTW: Raimi's 30 Days of Night opens this week.

Kalyx triaD 10-18-2007 11:54 AM

Hey Bub:

Wolverine's solo flick is expected to drop the summer of 2009. Liev Schreiber has been cast as a young William Stryker, the villain from X2. There will also be appearences from Victor Creed (Sabertooth) and other mutants from the X-Men series as well as ones new to live action. The official title is "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". We could expect the same treatment with Magneto's movie.

Kalyx triaD 10-24-2007 04:06 PM

Captain America's Director Found?:

Nick Cassavetes, an actor/director, has been linked to directing the upcoming Captain America movie. Its not conclusive in any way, but production is said to begin sometime in 2008 so who knows.

Story details so far put the movie setting 50/50 with the present and WW2 eras.

Kalyx triaD 10-25-2007 01:47 PM

Wolverine To Cover Origin?:

Kid actor Kodi Smit-McPhee as been cast as a young Logan in the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Appearently the kid's a great actor, but I'm wondering if featuring a lil James Howlette means there'll be scenes adapted from my favorite Wolverine story, Origin. It would be kick-ass to include them, and I order you to check the book out if you haven't.

http://www.typingmonkeys.com/Images/...ine-Origin.jpg http://www.romulusmyfather.com.au/images/kodi.jpg

Lock Jaw 10-25-2007 04:34 PM

Isn't the movie CALLED Wolverine: Origin or something?

Kalyx triaD 10-26-2007 12:52 AM

"X-Men Origins", a prefix title for future X-Men solo films (Like XM Origins: Magneto). I don't think its a direct connection to the book.

Lock Jaw 10-26-2007 12:55 AM

Ah. Well it still hints that they will in some way deal with origins.

The idea of 'First Production Shots' is more or less a "Look, we're really doing it" by the studio. They tend to be unimpressive but hey; they're doing it.

Kalyx triaD 01-07-2008 06:07 PM

Avengers Assemble, Baby!:

Jon Favreau enjoys directing Iron Man so much he's willing to do Avengers as well. He's excited enough to get right on it, but the studio told him to chill until the other heroes had their franchises established. Once the other heroes had their time in lime light, they'd be bought together (played by their actors and all) in the mega super-team movie event.

Everything I ever said about Marvel having inferior movies compared to DC over the years I take back with a side of crow pie. They're taking this super-team project seriously. How seriously?

Its rumored that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) will cameo in the upcoming Hulk film. [AIC News]

They reported awhile back that Liev Schreiber would portray the young William Stryker in the Wolverine solo film. Well that's actually not the case... He's actually set up to be Logan's nemesis Sabretooth. This naturally means Tyler Mane was probably never involved in the film (don't mind much).

"What Do You Think Of That, Tiger?":

Marvel is pushing for a Venom solo flick. They're calling it a spin-off which leads me to believe Topher Grace may return in the suit. To those that may not like that (I do, IMO) remember the legacy of the symbiote [in fiction] means anybody could wear the suit and be Venom, so a recast could fit in the current Spidey continuity as well (or whatever continuity comes of number four).

Speaking Of That:

James Vanderbilt (writer; "Zodiac") recently stated that he's eager to get down on the script for Spidey 4.

Doctor Strange On The Big Screen:

Quote:

According to EmpireOnline.com, del Toro wants to bring Marvel's sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange, to cinematic life. Del Toro's no stranger to Marvel movies, having previously helmed Blade II, which was scripted by David Goyer. Goyer, ironically, once penned a screenplay for a Doctor Strange movie, but that's not who del Toro has in mind to script his dream version.

"I talked with Neil Gaiman [about writing it]," del Toro told EmpireOnline. "I said, that's an interesting character because you can definitely make him more in the pulpy occult detective/magician mold and formula than was done in the Weird Tales, for example."

The filmmaker continued, "The idea of a character that really dabbles in the occult in a way that's not X-Filey, where the supernatural is taken for granted. That's interesting."

Del Toro warned fans, though, "I wouldn't use the suit!"

.44 Magdalene 02-11-2008 07:28 AM

I really can't see a Dr. Strange movie not sucking ass. They'll "fix" it to be more blockbuster, like they did with Ghostrider and Constantine. Not that those movies sucked or anything (okay, maybe Ghostrider did a little bit), but it's silly to even do this, really.

Also, I'm not crazy about the design... hopefully it looks better in non-statue form.

Merc With A Mouth May Have A Face:

Ryan Reynolds is rumored, strongly, to be appearing in the Wolverine solo flick as Deadpool. Deadpool is one of the superheroes Ryan showed interest in bringing to life (along with the Flash). It seems he got his wish, but nothing in the form of announcements were made concerning the official casting.

I dig it. Alot. This is almost Perfect Casting.

Yeah this has been rumoured for a good while now. I agree, pretty perfect.

The only way it could get any more perfect is if you put a young Bruce Cambell behind that mask.

Wonder how the yellow text balloons will work?

Ryan Reynolds has been rumored to be Deadpool since the days of a Deadpool movie rumor

Don't know if I believe it or not.

For the record, there was also talk of Bruce Campbell playing Mysterio in later Spiderman movies

One could hope.

Now That's A Royal Flush:

And in more news that Wolverine's solo flick may pwn the parent franchise it came from proper; Taylor Kitsch [Friday Night Lights] is joining the flick as Gambit. Given the time setting of the film I'm thinking there will be some scenes set in the present with ol' Remy coming around. I've heard some filming was taking place down south, I should've guessed. This movie is turning into a vehicle for quite abit of muties.

I could see Ryan as Flash, without a doubt in my mind. This Wolverine movie is sounding cooler by the minute.

Well, believe it, as the cast has now been confirmed and it would appear to be official. Along with the previously mentioned Gambit thing.

Dominic Monaghan is also going to be in it appearing a character named "Barnell" who may or may not be Beak from the comics and there's also going to be appearances from Agent Zero/Maverick and John Wraith. Definitely going to be some Weapon X action in there.
