Girls - Album (7.5/10)
Really liking this. Have listened to it twice in a row so far and listening a third time now. "Lo-fi" with kind of a "surreal" sound to it. Pretty great. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SuoTjYYqe4c&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SuoTjYYqe4c&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> |

Santigold - Santogold - 7.5/10
Had the album for ages but only got it for one or two songs. Listened to it all the way through yesterday for the first time. Pleasantly suprised. Good album. <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kCeZzW54a2o&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kCeZzW54a2o&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object> |
those god damn pimps - quickly now gentlemen, with a lively step
6.5/10 straight up rock and roll coming out of rockford, illinois. just saw them play on saturday night and picked up this, their newest effort. it's pretty straight forward, but they bring it hard. i can see getting sick of it after awhile as it will end up all sounding the same. love the guy's voice, though. my favorite track is probably "a gentleman's wager." i'm at work rigth now otherwise i'd check and see if they have stuff up on youtube. they probably do. |
Converge - Axe to fall
8.5/10 Pretty damn tasty. Nothing much from the metal scene these days does anything for me, so it is good to find something that does. |
Blitzen Trapper - Furr - 9/10

Paloma Faith - Do You Want The Truth, Or Something Beautiful - 8/10.
As a few of you might have picked up over time, I listen to alsorts. Someone suggested to me that I might see the merit in this record, and they really weren't wrong. It isn't even something that I would usually be into, but Paloma is so charismatic and compelling with her look and vocal, it is hard not to appreciate her on first impression. After that, you start to unfold her lyrics and music. She siings about relavance in her life and tends to be in a similar vein to someone like Lily Allen, but far more elequant and traditional in it's prose. Her vocal is like Etta James, steeped in the traditions of 50's female Jazz vocalists. And the music is just classic pop construction, with Jazz influenced melodies. I merely dream of being able to write pop songs as good as this. My only critizism of the album is how it's produced. It can sound quite manufactured, particulally the drum sounds used. Which I can understand for the market it's aimed at, but they could have gotten a better, more live sounding sound from it. If you listen to her live, it blows the record out of the water in my opinion. I also think the mixing levels are pretty poor in places. The shame of it is that she is trying to be a truely credible pop musician, and to be let down by production is almost going to alienate the audience she wouldn't have if she was a more mainstream popista. Stone Cold Sober is a great song, but this one is my favourite. The marketing and promotion must have been fucking woeful because this had a pretty poor showing in the charts, and for me it's as good as anything the pop world has ever produced. If I had finished writing this song on a guitar, and ran through it the final time, I would be 100% convinced I had just written a number 1. But then, promoting a 'credible pop star' is a fine line when not trying to send a distorted message to the audience. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hvXeUqlfxhY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hvXeUqlfxhY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> |
Wolfmother - Cosmic Egg
4/10 I probably won't listen to it again. |
lol...I used to buy CDs every week....last CD I bought was Death Magnetic, before that was Rev Theory.....although....
Five Finger Death Punch - War Is the Answer - 9/10. Fav tracks: Hard to See, Bulletproof, Dying Breed, Walk Away. |
One Life Crew - Is What It Is 10/10
Cleveland's own One Life Crew. The most misunderstood Hardcore band ever. Their whole discography, 53 tracks, on one album. A must have if you are into 90's hardcore. You can get the CD for $5. You can't go wrong. http://doubleornothingrecords.com/ |
Dappled Cities - Zounds
8.5/10 Gorgeous sunny indie pop, stylishly executed and lots of fun to listen to. It's a little bit latter-day Piebald-ish. Very 'All Ears, All Eyes...' era. Excellent live show too, at that. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/phZNmfGaqkw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/phZNmfGaqkw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> |

It's a pop album, and Robbie Williams does pop well. 6/10 |

Nah "first time" doesn't even matter really. Post whatever U wanna post.

Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist
9/10 Genuinely well-crafted album. Nice flow, interesting melodies, funky as hell, big sing-along value, plus some good baby-makin' tunes. Aww, shit. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NxzIjYO-VD0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NxzIjYO-VD0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> |

Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends
7-8/10 It is pretty good. I don't know if it is is better than "Paisley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme" I've been slowly going through their albums, and they are pretty good all round. |

Here are the albums I got lately:
IAM - 20 A legendary French rap group which decided to have a live concert in front of the pyramids of Gizeh for their 20th anniversary. All their hits rearranged with an orchestra, some arab instruments and singers, etc. One of the best live albums I have heard. 10/10 Sage Francis - Sick of Wasting His latest album of rarities, collaborations and b-sides. There are a couple of good tracks, particularly "SFR Pays Dues". This one is definitely the best from the album. Some of the older stuff and some of the radio appearances either sound cheap or isn't that good at all. Still, more good than bad, as usual. 7/10 Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky Their second album is not as good as the first one. There are 5 songs I would listen to regularly, the others are either too far from their folk roots musically or not funny enough. Still, "Hurt Feelings", "You Don't Have To Be A Prostitute" and "Angels" are worth listening to. 5/10 |

Last album I listened to was The Pains of Being Pure of Heart- ST. This sounds like a combination of The Smiths meet some 1990's dreampop, a lot less mopey than Morrissey lyrics though. Best song would be "The Tenure Itch." |
Sloan - Between The Bridges
10/10. One of the best albums I've ever heard. |
Nirvana- Live at Reading 92 (DVD and CD version)
First of all, it's about time this epic performance came about, in such high quality. One of the most memorable live shows of it's time, and the moment Nirvana sort of was at their peak...or very close to it. The dvd obviously doesnt edit out anything..no time constraints. The CD does edit out most of the talking and joking, all that banter, but the songs are kickass so whatever. If you ever liked Nirvana and/or just love great live shows, this is pretty essential. 10/10 |
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water
9/10 some tasty shizzle right there. |
The Dutchess & The Duke - Sunset/Sunrise - 7/10
A sleepy little album filled with acoustics and harmony. |
Last one I listened to all the way through?
From the Cradle to the Brave - Highland Glory 10/10 My favourite album Top track - From the Cradle to the Brave, closely followed by the Land of Forgotten Dreams part 1. Wear Your Guns to Neverland is also extremely good thinking about it. |
Them Crooked Vultures
5/10 I was underwhelmed |
Quote:
Most modern rock bands do not have the balls to make an album like this (ala Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Sick Puppies) The fact that two established 90's vets and a rock god from the 70's took this long to make such an awesome "modern rock" record says a lot about the abysmal state of the music industry/why I have been listening to a lot of indie and electronic lately. |
tegan & sara - sainthood
7/10 far more upbeat than their last album, which i enjoy a great deal. i didn't like it as much on first listen, but after a few spins i'm sold on it. still don't think it's as good as the con, but it's also not such a buzzkill. the ocean and someday are probably my favorites |
Nana Grizol - Love It Love It
8/10 It's like super cutesy, but that's what I was looking for so good stuff. |
Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
9/10 This record was masterfully put together. Dylan had a true sense of the times and he often portrayed his knowledge in his songwriting. This album was released in 1964. The amazing thing is, things had not begun to change just yet until after Dylan wrote The Times They Are A-Changin'. Why I think that is amazing is because because he was such a smart person, he basically predicted change to come before it actually did. A savvy album. I rated it 9 out of 10 because no album can ever be absolutely perfect. But this is as close as they come. |
blonde on blonde and blood on the tracks are superior

Minamo - Kuroi Kawa (Black River)
Improv music for violin and piano. 7/10 |
I picked up the new Flyleaf - Memento Mori the other day. Actually some more religious stuff on this album, and some more melodic, so I dont like it as much as their last one. 6/10

Mastodon - Crack the Skye - 9.5/10 (Oblivion) - Really really great album. Loved the whole thing. Halford - III: Winter Songs - 7.5/10 (Christmas is for Everyone) - I was pleasantly surprised at the metal-ness of it. Kind of reminded me of TSO on the standards, but not as good. Cream - Wheels of Fire - 10/10 (White Room, Politician, Crossroads) - I just listened to the studio side because I wasnt really in the mood for extended live jams, but it's a pure classic. One of my favorites. |
Mindy Smith - Stupid Love
6.5/10 It is decent enough, but doesn't compare to "One Moment More" or "Long Island Shores". |

Them crooked Vultures
7/10 It's one of the best sounding rock bands I have ever heard. It's full of really sick hooks and riffs, and I love Homme's voice.... But there are only 2 or 3 really good songs, the rest are blazé and the lyrics are pretty much forgettable. The Strokes - Is This It 10/10 Every song is beautiful. The Lo-fi electic indie sound was virtually invented with this record. Julian's voice is so unique and lazily perfect and suits the music of the band so well. I put it on because I saw it was top of the NME best albums of the decade, and because they are touring next year, and after listening to it for the first time in a while, it's hard to argue against it. |
Are you kidding? that is one of my fav albums, but Guided by voices was doing thatlo fi a while back.
It was pitchfork's number 3 as well |

Pearl Jam - Backspacer
Finally got around to listening to it. Not bad, but it didn't hook me as much as their last album did. The first single especially left me pretty cold, but I'd give it a good 6.5/10 overall. |
Quote:
Before The Strokes, the vast majority of the indie culture was in England, where GBV are pretty much obscure at best. |
What are you talking about? You are showing your ignorance here and should probably just stop.
|
Well why don't you use all your infalliable knowledge to tell me about US indie from around 97 to 01? I cannot wait to be educated.....
|
Well besides Pavement, bonnie Prince Billy, Neutral Milk HOtel, Jesus and Mary Chain, My bloody valentine, The Jesus Lizard, all of elephant 6 just about, modest mouse, the microphones, dismemberment plan, Sonic Youth, grandaddy, sebadoh, WILCO, built to spill, spoon, and a hell of a bunch of others I guess you are right.
|
Not that I disagree with you Clox, but just from glancing at your list I can see two bands that aren't American.
|
Lol, I just started naming off late nineties indie bands. I know a whole bunch more, but I didn't think it would be fair to actually look them up or it'd be cheating. Probably not cheating, but I would have felt kind of dickish for actually looking up information. being informed would be a huge advantage against fabien in this conversation.
|
The only bands you listed either weren't or aren't big enough to have been a notable influence on modern indie bands, in the context we are discussing, weren't classed as indie in the first place, or both.
My point is, guided by voices did little to influence The Strokes. It's blaitantly all 70's guitar bands and 80's electro bands. they say so themselves. |
Radiohead - Ok computer
8/10 After years of refusing to check out radiohead due to my hate towards gimpy-eyed Thom Yorke, I finally bit the bullet and bought this album. I have to say I actually quite liked it. It is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, like some people seem to believe, but it is a good album none the less. |

Them Crooked Vultures - 8/10
Like it a lot more now than I did when I first listened to it. Grew on me a lot, and I like more than just a few songs now. Not the most amazing CD I've ever heard, but really good, especially over the crap that's come out in the past few years. |
I like Kid A, Amnesiac, and In Rainbows better than Ok computer

The Bravery - The Sun and The Moon
Rating: 7.5/10 Favorite song: "This is Not the End' <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TbUy1yTMKuQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TbUy1yTMKuQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> Pretty solid album. One of their songs kept playing at work, so I thought I'd check out the album. I wasn't disappointed. Pretty typical rock album, but there are some catchy tunes. |
Incubus - Light Grenades
Rating - 10/10 Favorite Song - "Paper Shoes" <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FHX2qiVkJ40&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FHX2qiVkJ40&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Incubus is pretty much my favorite band ever, so I may be a little biased on the rating. "Paper Shoes" isn't even really my favorite song on the album, but it'd be hard to pick just one. They really ventured out in this album and weren't afraid to take risks, which I feel paid off. There were rock out moments, chill out moments, great lyrics, and great music. I feel like I want to listen to this album every day. |
Vampire Weekend - Contra
8/10 Really good. <3 this. Listening again now. First album got "played out" really fast but this feels like it will have more replay value. |
Tegan and Sara - The Con
8/10 Need to get some more of their stuff. |
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
