Haunting of Hill House

Just watched the first episode on Netflix. Seems really good. Does a great job building tension. Does more with what it doesn't show than from what it does. Sign of good horror. And what it does show you is pretty fucking unnerving.

Been waiting for genuinely good horror series. American Horror Story has never done it for me. It's okay, just never really spooked me or creeped me out. This does a much better job of that.

Fignuts 10-14-2018 03:50 AM

Some of the CG they use is god awful though. oof.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-14-2018 05:55 PM

Watched the first two episodes; it has me intrigued, and I will continue watching it.

slik 10-14-2018 11:35 PM

I watched the first three eps and am hooked

RP 10-15-2018 01:58 PM

sounds like a ABT movie.

Fignuts 10-15-2018 04:49 PM

YOU sound like an ABT movie.

Also nah. Terrible CGI kittens aside, show looks like it has a good budget.

Fignuts 10-16-2018 05:18 PM

And done.

SPOILER: show
Love the way certain things connect. Like the dead body in the wall being the tall floating ghost, or the bent neck lady being Nell herself. Also loved the way spirits made themselves present in the past as a whole.

Only complaint is that the ending was a bit sappy. Like, a happy ending is fine, but that was like 15 minutes of a lifetime special.

Still, great show, and I hope the people who made it go on to make more. Maybe adapt a different novel or short story for each series.

RP 10-17-2018 06:32 AM

Watching 1st episode now.

RP 10-17-2018 06:35 AM

You know what bugs me about these movies or tv shows. What modern family would live in places like these? None.. It's fucking stupid.

Fignuts 10-17-2018 03:18 PM

It's not their actual home. The husband and wife are renovators, and they are living on site with their kids for the summer while they do the job.

rez 10-18-2018 08:38 PM

Wow. Just got done with ep3. Great episode. This is a pretty intelligent "horror".

It's like a spooky, "This is Us."...which I don't watch because of the feelz.

rez 10-18-2018 08:45 PM

After 3rd ep

SPOILER: show
Theo is def my favorite character at this point. Shirley and Stephen are cunts. Luke is like Nell...I'd be a druggie too

Fignuts 10-18-2018 08:50 PM

SPOILER: show
Yeah, I'd be taking ALL the fucking drugs if I saw the things he did. Both the dumb waiter and tall man scenes were done really well. Fucking terrifying.

rez 10-18-2018 09:02 PM

SPOILER: show
Shirley can lick ass. Boohoo on the kitty cats but turning Luke away from Nell's wedding was a dick move, high or not. She really wanted her twin there. Her moral high ground against Stephen and his greed to cash in is pathetic. I hope she redeems herself.

rez 10-18-2018 09:02 PM

next up, episode 4

slik 10-18-2018 09:42 PM

Just finished episode 6

Really good, very tense

rez 10-23-2018 09:37 PM

last ep finished

SPOILER: show
wow, just finished. legit emotional. 10/10

rez 10-23-2018 09:39 PM

I'm going to really need to suck in the youtube fan vids/comments in the next few days

Frank Drebin 10-24-2018 09:26 AM

I've tried to watch the first episode 3 times. I can't get through it. I don't get it. I keep hearing this is good so I've kept trying. Someone help.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-24-2018 12:06 PM

I'll be watching the last episode tonight; epi 9 was so good, giving so many answers.

Sepholio 10-24-2018 12:23 PM

How scary is this on a scale of "baby shark do do dooo" to "OH GOD MAKE IT STOP WHY GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"? My son loves scary stuff and I may watch it with him leading up to Halloween but if it's too scary I don't want him to see it.

slik 10-24-2018 01:56 PM

He'll be fine

The first ep is the worst ep.
It's a lot of set up but it does pay off. Once the show hits episode 3 things pickup big time.

Jordan 10-25-2018 08:34 AM

Can't read this thread yet. But I'm 3 eps deep in this and it's REALLY GOOD and I was LEGIT frightened by some scenes.

How old is he?

I'd say on a scale of 5 so far I've seen a moment that felt like a 4. But most of it is a family drama. The scares are scary especially if you were a kid who felt you lived in a haunted house. :'(:(:nono:

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-25-2018 01:38 PM

I thought the finale was a bit of something and nothing; did not feel like a satisfactory ending. Overall, a good series let down by a poor last episode.

rez 10-25-2018 01:56 PM

SPOILER: show
ghost Poppy and ghost Olivia should be put in ghost jail by ghost Hugh, ghost Nell, and ghost Dudleys. Horrible mum that Olivia

SPOILER: show
the ending where they're all together was gonna show the red room window but it was changed last minute to a happy closure ending

Fignuts 10-25-2018 03:16 PM

awwwwwww thats so much better

Frank Drebin 10-25-2018 10:49 PM

Finally made it past the pilot.

First episode is def the worst as slik said. Kept going back thinking I missed something because so much didn't make sense. Didn't realize that's kinda the show. Little bits here and there going back and forth in various time frames. Not the best way to start a show but I'm into it now.

Just finished episode 6 (family at the funeral home) which was amazing, imo. Looking forward to more of the mystery being unraveled. It's horror, so I'm guessing we aren't getting an ending that ties everything up in a neat package but as long as we generally close the door on the family and their story at the end I'm ok with that. We shal see.

Fignuts 10-25-2018 11:05 PM

The dumbwaiter scene was the scariest to me.

rez 10-25-2018 11:14 PM

The siblings are so real. I guess the show took a toll on the actors, I read (not as bad as Heath Ledgar). I think I can relate a little bit with all of them...even Shirley & Steven.

rez 10-25-2018 11:17 PM

Theo is my girl, though

The actress that plays Nell hasn't been in much but she's going to blow up with offers

I was impressed with all the kid performances as well. Possibly a Stranger Things like surge for their young careers.

Frank Drebin 10-26-2018 08:08 AM

Adult Theo is the director's wife. She's good but that's why she's there.

rez 10-26-2018 10:15 AM

Yes, and he's got good taste

Frank Drebin 10-26-2018 03:50 PM

Fantastic. Ending was great.

Yes very scary. Most of the ghost stuff is scary, and worth watching the show for. However I agree that the ending was weak, the last two or three episodes got too extra for my taste.

slik 10-31-2018 09:26 PM

Finally finished it. I enjoyed how it tied everything else we'd seen together and had a surprisingly uplifting finish.

I can't see them making a second season since the story is completely wrapped up.

Fignuts 10-31-2018 09:44 PM

It would be great if each season adapted a different novel or short story.

GD 11-03-2018 07:50 AM

Certainly one of the better shows put out by Netflix. Completed the season in three sittings along with a bottle of bourbon. It felt a bit emotionally draining at times but the characters were very compelling. Reflecting on the final episode a bit more than I should.

That's true. It took me an while to realize that she was the lead character in "Hush".
