Probably.

Feels like you can do all of this in Fallout 4 instead.

I spent over 24hrs putting together a 16min scenario on PS1's RPG Maker. Had a working shop, boss battle, dialogue and most importantly - a simple script tree where picking fruit from a royal garden would send you to prison. It was cool.

I spent about 7-8 hrs on that one making a spriteset of Sephiroth from scratch. I remember wishing I could use some sort of mouse configuration on the Playstation, because piecing that together on the controller kinda sucked. At least I had lucked out and got my hands on a Dex Drive on the cheap. I was able to upload it to some now defunct site. Maybe 2-3 someones somewhere got to enjoy that.

Not going to mention how long I worked on a map of the Resident Evil mansion, and thought I was going to remake the whole game as an RPG... lofty goals that never happened. I think I made the first floor, scripted in an impossible fight at the front door (to kinda mimic the cutscene), put a save point where the typewriter was, and set the first zombie encounter past the dining room.

Gave me a whole new appreciation for actual devs, I'll tell ya...

Yeah any game or mode like that that gives a taste of the type of autism you need to flesh out such a small part of whatever it is you're putting together. My time exploring Unity's dev tools was overwhelming. Major respect for thise crunch guys.

Also funny (in respect to RPG Maker 1, I mean) how ahead of its time that thing was.

The infrastructure was not quite in place yet for doing anything major with it unless you were in the nerdiest of the nerdy circles of four or five friends who ALL stumbled across it and all shared your creations amongst yourselves. Internet was still kind of a wild west frontier town, MP3s were "the devil", and dedicated communities to such a niche thing was far from readily available and accessible.

Like I said, I got lucky with getting a Dex Drive super cheap (there were a bunch on clearance at Wal-Mart, and nobody knew what it even was... I remember it was way cheaper than picking up an additonal memory card and that feeling all kinds of ironic), so I was able to back shit up to my PC and swap out saves from games when I inevitably needed more blocks freed up for RPG Maker. I only ever found out about a Dex Drive myself because of this game. Wasn't really a publicized peripheral, because memory cards were a goldmine of an accessory. Why publicize the single purchase cow when you can sell the milk repeatedly at a premium, or something like that.

Pretty sure now there will be some fairly bustling subreddit or fan wiki, and all you would need to do is hot swap an external hard drive from your xbox to a PC with some drive reading tool installed for file access. You can plug in a MS keyboard and mouse, or even possibly use the analog sticks and a chatpad.

If something even as "simple" as the first RPG Maker or even Fighter Maker came out now, ATLUS would have prob'ly made a mint.

Seeing the innovations with 'Create Share Play' type features in games RPG and Fighter Maker could use another shot in this environment. Upload creations on community servers, voting, prefabs and scripts to share, I'd love to see it. Particularly Fighter Maker, where part 2 was severely hampered by the tech of the time (and it wasn't the most intuitive thing ever).

Hey, it is really fun playing RPG games that have action theme.
