The logo is reminiscent of the old stereotype with big red lips and the text being the teeth.

I don't think we should be telling a person of color how to feel about a shirt he clearly sees as offensive.

I would have never guessed/noticed/assumed the "racist" part of the shirt.... at first thought he was upset just because his shirt was so plain and bland.

On its own, the shirt looks bad and par for the course for most of WWE's shirt designs.

Between going with that color combo and design and giving Myles the stereotypical happy black guy wrestler gimmick, WWE left themselves wide open for the black face criticisms to happen.

This got me thinking: when was the last time two black wrestlers feuded with each other? Was it Shad and JTG? Maybe The New Day and D-Von or The Prime Time Players? There were feuds there, right?

I would say that having a problem with that shirt in a company as racially offensive as WWE is kind of like getting offended at the decor in a porn film.

I doubt that the graphic designer or whoever did that on purpose, but I immediately thought "oh no..." upon seeing the pic before reading his tweet

I'm guessing it's harder for non Americans to see it because racism towards black people isn't nearly as engrained in our culture and history.

That would make sense as a reason and why you get instances like in the Netherlands and Spain where they hold certain annual festivals that always draws criticisms in the US of being black face and/or racist in tone.

Those festivals don't generate the same tone there because of cultural and origin differences although more people there have become aware in recent years of how those festivals can be seen as being racist.

I still don't see how the smiling teeth means the red background is the stereotypical racist lips, it's clearly the inside of the mouth if the letters are meant to be teeth.

If people are offended, then it is offensive. What I don't think is it being blatantly offensive, as in by design, but just a case of something not being thought out very well.

For some reference this is what the Rolling Stones shirt looks like as a plain design. They also sell it in a variety of designs and colors.

They have had that logo for like 40 years, and it is a fair comparison.

WWE released a statement basically blaming Myles and saying that talent have input and significant creative say in their shirt designs.

Myles has already called bullshit on that.

They’ve had an alarming number of black wrestlers whose sole gimmick is just “smiley black guy” with little to no character development beyond that. Shit that’s been the entirety of Apollo Crews’ three and a half year main roster run.

To counterbalance all the "I don't see it" folks, the Al Jolson-looking derogatory imagery is the first thing I noticed. This is one of those things that could have been completely avoided if they just ran it by him or somebody with some sense first instead of "here's your merch". This looks like something out of Bamboozled, and that was a satirical movie.

If I had any faith that WWE had any sort of self-awareness or quality writing, I would figure this was the beginning of a gimmick, angle, and push for the guy trying to buck the "this is all you are" trend. But, of course this is legit. Of course they're that tone deaf. Just of fucking course.
