That was great.

I like John Stossel as a investigative journalist type person but he's really a huge asshole

Jordan 04-29-2020 08:37 AM

This was one of my favorite epsiodes yet. I have a lot of respect for Dr. D. He's a bad mother fucker. Goddamn I want to see Dr. D in his prime vs New Jack.

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 08:59 AM

Is Schultz still peddling his bullshit story about he and Mr.T

drave 04-29-2020 09:10 AM

Hogan said that Dr. D slapped the piss outta Mr. T.

Dr. D maintains he was going over to see his friend Tanaka, next to him. I was kinda fucked up watching this, so names might not be right....

This was good shit. This dude does NOT give a fuck. I always recall seeing this clip, but knew nothing about the story around it. Loved it.

Stossel is a huge fucking pussy.

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 10:12 AM

Greg Valentine said he watched the whole thing happen. Chief Jay basically told Greg "watch this" and as soon as Dr. D ran towards the ring he was tackled and hog tied by a bunch of cops

He was a badass bounty hunter too, ahead of DOG

Jordan 04-29-2020 10:52 AM

In hindsight it's too bad he didn't beat him bloody considering what it cost him. Fuck Vince he told Dave to let him have it. I really wish Shultz would've been the WWF heel that epsiode intended. I wonder was he going to originally have the Piper role at WrestleMania?

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 12:22 PM

He was barely above a jobber to the stars by the end of 84

Schultz was more or less done being a pushed guy when they replaced Schultz with Bob Orton in Piper's crew in mid 84

Jordan 04-29-2020 12:58 PM

He should have slammed Andre at Pontiac

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 01:49 PM

I seem to remember a lot of guys talking about how Mr T was a dick, I know Piper and him didn't get along at all.

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 02:41 PM

The Mr.T incident happened in California, not MSG.

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 02:46 PM

Herb Abrams next week will be the most entertaining episode they've done.

Bad News Gertner 04-29-2020 02:48 PM

Lol fuck I can't wait for that episode

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 03:16 PM

The Dr D one has been pretty funny. Almost as funny as New Jack.
I was nearly in tears laughing when he slapped Stossel and Stossel said "Holy shit". That was well cut.
Never noticed that Schultz never even pulled his hand back.

BLAM!

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 03:17 PM

"My ears were ringing"

Yeah no shit John you complete gimp.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-29-2020 03:17 PM

Dr. D did an hour long interview with Cornette where he goes into a little detail on the Stossell incident and talks about his bounty hunting. Highly advised listen.

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 03:18 PM

He slapped the shit out of him.

Hahahahaha

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 03:20 PM

John Stossel is a scumbag man. Right to the camera "It hurt until I got paid".

At least the Belzer guy named his house after Hulk Hogan. This guy is just a douchebag.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-29-2020 03:22 PM

We all know it's staged. But to go up to the guys who are putting the work and tell them "you're fake" or "it's fake" is fucking asking for trouble in that era.

Seanny One Ball 04-29-2020 03:23 PM

I think I'd rather get choked out by Hogan than slapped twice by Dr D

drave 04-29-2020 03:24 PM

I can understand why he would be pissed about a star coming in to the first-ever Mania, given how "closed" the industry was then, and the shit guys had to do to get over.

He was an amazing heel, that is how heels should STILL work. They should be assholes everywhere, all the time.

The funniest part about Hogan choking the other guy is how calm he was after saying if you laugh at me i will choke you out !!

ozzman6669 04-29-2020 03:42 PM

The only thing missing in this episode is that they didn't went into the steroids trial at all. Maybe they will do an episode about it in season 3 !

Bwa hahaha fuck I love Vader. Really wish they had pushed him like the monster he was. Especially after he attacked Monsoon. That guy was shitting his fucking pants.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-30-2020 03:37 AM

Watching the slap episode. Fucking Stossel is smarmy bastard. Never felt bad for him. But he's called wrestling bullshit like 5x now. Fuck that guy.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-30-2020 03:40 AM

Like this guy was actively looking to expose the business for no reason. It's not like he was saying he wanted to expose steroid use or sexual actually. His beef was it as predetermined and 3 out of every 10 bought it as real? Lmao

drave 04-30-2020 08:16 AM

And after a slap, he ran away like a bitch.

The line of "Yeah, my pain went away...... after I got paid". After he claimed to not be able to be a father to his own newborn did it for me.

"I can't be a dad because I don't have money for getting called on MY shit".

Seanny One Ball 04-30-2020 10:20 AM

The most interesting thing anyone learned from that episode is that there is an actual term for people who hold onto pain in order to attain financial compensation.

I had never heard of such a thing.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-30-2020 10:24 AM

Yeah, I wasn't in love with that episode. But I didn't dislike it either. I find that there isn't much in the way of anything new being revealed about this stuff. I mean, it's always fun to hear from the talking heads It really depends on the narrative direction taken. The Benoit episode was my favorite but not for anything that was revealed, but more for the perspective from Daniel and Nancy's sister.

Savio 04-30-2020 12:09 PM

Everyone on this forum would stand up to Dr. D and probably whoop his ass if put in the same position.

Seanny One Ball 04-30-2020 12:23 PM

No, none of us would have said it.
Especially not to him...

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-30-2020 12:30 PM

Yeah I'd try to buddy up to Dr. D most likely in hopes that I looked tough via association.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-30-2020 01:05 PM

In no way would I sit there and tell a wrestler what he does is fake lol.

Droford 04-30-2020 02:08 PM

Bad News Gertner 04-30-2020 05:24 PM

Finally watched the Schultz episode.

Lol oh Eddy Mansfield. The next truth he tells will be the first.

Kind of a meh episode. I'd rate it the weakest of the season except for the Brawl for All one.

Bad News Gertner 04-30-2020 05:28 PM

Eddy Mansfield would later run independent shows with a lot of wrestlers from that era which is hilarious. A good payday trumps principles

He did it for the boys, member?

Emperor Smeat 05-02-2020 03:03 AM

Just finished watching the Shultz episode and it was pretty decent.

 at Vince and WWE sending John Stossel to a quack doctor as a way to get out of a lawsuit.

The story between Mr. T and Shultz and Hogan pulling a similar stunt to a reporter were way more interesting than the slap story itself.

drave 05-02-2020 09:18 AM

Or even the fact that Hogan choking a guy out on TV and (possibly) giving him a concussion was "okay" and everyone laughed. But 2 lil slaps is not okay...

Seanny One Ball 05-02-2020 02:39 PM

It may be on Memphis actually.

There was a WWF invasion angle around 93 somewhere. Lots of amazing promos.

Seanny One Ball 05-02-2020 02:40 PM

UWF was definitely also on Amazon Prime though so I probably conflated the two.

Jordan 05-02-2020 02:45 PM

I'm 4 episodes in and here are my thoughts...

In reading about UWF I always thought the roster sounded bloated (literally) and underwhelming. But with Bruno and the very enegetic Herb Abrams on commentary, plus Captain's Corner every episode... this shit is really fun.

Steve Williams is great, Cactus is blooming, Patera is still pretty good, Orton is still good, Orndorff is still good ... Brain Blair is like a low rent Sting.. awesome. I enjoy the package they are selling. It's simple but it does remind me a lot of WWF Superstars in a good way too. Some of the promo's are really bad but it's like that 90's bad that is really entertaining.

LOL as I type this a masked character named "THE VIKING" just a promo and said "I don't have to tell you how bad I am". HAHAHAA.

The WWF invasion of Memphis in the early 90's is fucking awesome stuff. WWE should try and get that converted to HD and released on the Network.

Well, like I just said it is clearly owned by Amazon.
Plus the Network is dying a rapid death.

Herb thought Wild Thing Steve Ray was sleeping with his wife. So Herb paid Dr. Death to shoot on his during a match.

Starts towards the end of the match

I wonder if how things might have been different with the UWF had Herb Abrams didn't have his vices. Also, what would he (Abrams) have called the UWF had Bill Watts trademarked the letters.

Bad News Gertner 05-07-2020 08:28 PM

They were dead in the water regardless. All these promotions that wanted to present wrestling "the way it used to be" all had a short shelf life (UWF, AWF etc..). SMW is probably the most successful and even that had a low ceiling.

Bad News Gertner 05-07-2020 09:37 PM

Emperor Smeat 05-08-2020 03:59 PM

Meltzer had a story in this week's Observer Newsletter from someone who worked for Herb Adams' UWF revealing how much of a mess the company was backstage.

Quote:

“I watched the DARK SIDE episode on Herb Abrams tonight. They seemed to portray him as a freewheeling cokehead but never mentioned that - as far as I know - he was married. I met his wife, a quiet Asian woman. She, Herb, and I rode in the limo back from the Babylon, NY house show that the UWF ran. At that event, she sold/ripped tickets while I sold t-shirts. The promotion was so disorganized that I found out I was selling shirts WHEN I GOT TO THE VENUE and helped carry the boxes into the lobby of the high school (assisted by David Sammartino). Simply put, they had assigned or hired NOBODY to do it. I borrowed a marker and used the back of some event fliers to put up signs saying "T-SHIRTS $12." At intermission, Herb's wife counted cash, then looked over and asked, "Who gave you $12 as the price?" I said "Nobody." She replied, "Oh, they're usually $13." I remember Herb frantically coming over and asking her for as much cash as she could give him - then asked me how much I'd sold. I handed him over $600. Whoever rented the gym was demanding cash, not a check. His rep had started to grow by then. The day before (Friday) there was supposed to be a house show in Jamaica, Queens at a converted movie house that now booked occasional gospel revival shows. I had scouted Queens locations for him (John Arezzi scouted Long Island) and showed up that night in a suit, nervous if this was my `big break’ into wrestling. The building was FREEZING as I arrived and met Arezzi. The ring was being assembled and the workmen were in winter coats (it was January). Arezzi and his WIFE arrived in a limo. He was not in a good mood b/c the concession stand was not set up and the heat was off. The event manager explained `I told you, Herb, I need cash not a check.’ Herb replied, `I gave you a check for $1,000!’ The manager said , `If you give me cash, I will turn on the heat.’ Furious, Herb said, `The show's off!’ He yelled at the ring workers, `Break it down, show's off!’ He went to the box (his wife was in the box office selling tickets) and told her to refund money. He went outside as the first limo pulled up and Ivan Koloff jumped out. Herb yelled, `Send the limo back to Manhattan! The show if off!’ Arezzi rolled his eyes and said, `See you tomorrow’ (at his wrestling convention at the LaGuardia Marriott). When I got there, Herb's wife was at the table selling pictures of wrestlers who were in the signing room. She recognized me and asked me to sell photos while she used the bathroom. She didn't come back lol. I wound up selling photos until the event ended. At that point, Herb asked me to attend the show in Babylon and stuck me in a limo with Steve Ray, B. Brian Blair and his wife, and Paul Orndorff. I was pretty intimidated but Steve had a bunch of questions about New York for me. I was also there at the end of the night when Herb was doing payoffs (by check). Herb told a funny story about how his wife wrote the check to Andre for the one UWF TV taping that he attended. She didn't know his real name and made it out to Andre the Giant, so his business manager had to handle cashing it at the bank.
