Movies that were critically panned but loved by fans

As the title suggests, what's your hot take?

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 08:30 AM

I acknowledge their existence

Frank Drebin 12-21-2018 08:49 AM

Knowing
Cloud Atlas

Love both of those. There's a small contingent of people *I think* who feel the same. Both not well liked in general and I have no idea why. Cloud Atlas was amazing and must have been a hell of a time to edit.

Roger Ebert, a fantastic writer and the last great film reviewer (Other than Seann One Ball) gave both 4 stars if I recall. I'll find links and add those when I'm not on mobile.

Frank Drebin 12-21-2018 08:53 AM

For more traditional cult followings, movies like Donnie Dark, Dark City and The Goonies are ones that come to mind.

GD 12-21-2018 09:07 AM

The catalyst for making this thread was "Eurotrip". Not sure if future generations will understand the significance of this motion picture film.

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 09:39 AM

The Psychotronic Man and all other "Psychotronic" films.

GD 12-21-2018 10:18 AM

How about Step Brothers?

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 11:15 AM

How is a film that made $128,000,000 at the box office and that spawned several pop-culture references in use to this day, a "cult" film?
People are purposefully misusing the term "cult film" in order to further appreciate very successful films and it fucks me off.

It's a pathetic thing to get mad at but the term should always describe films who's success came after a period of failure and is owed to a dedicated group of fans.

Step Brothers and other major Box Office successes are just that, successful films...

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 11:17 AM

Walk into any public place in the English speaking West and shout "It's the fuckin Catalina wine mixer" and people will remember it.

Was it significant?

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 11:29 AM

Just....don't...

Damian Rey 2.0 12-21-2018 12:07 PM

Like critically not well received? Because for me the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is it. To this day I'm not sure how it didn't get better critical reception. It's funny, the characters are fleshed out and there's an emotional core at the center of the plot, the villain is an absolute bad ass and was booked beautifully as the final boss, and most importantly it's fun and very much an 80s esque movie.

TMNT is easily one of my favorite movies ever and the critical reviews baffle me.

Man, I was too drunk when I made this thread. How about movies that were critically panned but loved by fans? Does that help?

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 06:30 PM

Remo Williams

GD 12-21-2018 06:33 PM

How about The Cable Guy? It was not well received by critics or the fans at the time but has had some following over the years.

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 06:34 PM

Hmmm... turns out Shane Black is rebooting it. Remo Williams...a failed film from the 80's starring Fred Ward and Joel Gray about a guy who's only skill is ever so slightly moving to the side whenever someone pulls a gun on him.

I've always loved it. Yeah it's a good pick.

A Tv series based off the books would be awesome as well

Seanny One Ball 12-21-2018 07:29 PM

You're getting a film based on the books. Possibly a series of films if it does well and Shane Black doesn't go mental hiring molesters.

GD 12-21-2018 07:39 PM

The Girl Next Door feat. former WWE superstar Luther Reigns.

What a shock it was that Jim Carrey wasn't bouncing off the walls and talking out of his ass. People weren't ready for it.

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 12:09 PM

The lack of Ton Loc didn't help it any

Bring It On: In It to Win It

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 04:07 PM

I have the first one and the third one, don't have that one.

Edit: both Tisdale sisters? I should get this.

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 04:08 PM

I own too many shit films that I still enjoy. Get Over It is also good shit.

Man, Donnie Darko fits the premise to a T. I didn't even *know* this movie existed until I worked in a video store, and it was like the quintessential "hipster" flick, before hipsters were even a thing.

I say Clue. That movie apparently got absolutely shit on when it was in theatres, and it's one of my favorite flicks ever. It did so much with so little, and the multiple ending gimmick was ahead of it's time, made even better by the home video final edit, where it just strung them together. I didn't know any of that. I just thought it was fun, and one of the first movies I had seen where a good portion of that fun was catching the dialogue. In hindsight, it was kinda like training wheels for later appreciating something like MST3K.

Sixx 12-26-2018 01:08 PM

How is "The Room" not in here?

I'm not even saying I personally loved it, but I dare you to find me a movie that's got 0% (if I remember right) on RT and still loved, quoted and mentioned as this one.

GD 12-26-2018 01:20 PM

Leave your stupid comments in your pocket.

Leave your sarcastic gimmick out of this planet.

Sixx 12-26-2018 01:36 PM

Wait.

That's "reverend" not "relevant"?

That nevermind my answer to your shitty post.

Seanny One Ball 12-26-2018 07:28 PM

Sixx you would love John Waters. He's just dreadful.

You should also watch all Andy Warhol films because they are also unequivocally terrible and hipsters claim to love them.

Anat makes you think I like "dreadful"?

I said PEOPLE love the room. There's tons of them that love it.

I can't join them yet cause I haven't even seen it. Only some random clips on youtube.

Seanny One Ball 12-26-2018 08:10 PM

Sucks when people make wacky assumptions huh

It's a line from the movie. You'd know if you weren't too damn busy acting in Polish soap operas and music videos. Make me sick :nono:

Rat Race

I have never understood the hatred. It's just one long sequence of slapstick gags and I love it.

Damian Rey 2.0 01-08-2019 02:04 AM

Rat Race was hilarious last time I saw.

Still have a warm place in my heart for Hook
