Explain the World Cup to me please.
I havent watched the last 2 weeks.
Is this an actual tournament that will be on the actual card, or are they doing that stupid crap where the tournament takes place on raws and smackdowns and then the finals is on the card. Basically I want to know if this is KoTR format Also is this even a tournament? I dont know. I know Angle and Cena are in. Who else after tonight. Thanks I love you |

One-night tournament at Crown Jewel. I don't like that NXT guys aren't eligible. Seems weird to have a "best in the world" tournament and not even open it up to everyone on your own roster.
I'm way behind on NXT right now though so maybe they have a big thing going on down there. |

Ya it would be amazing if Ciampa showed up and made a run. They dont have to let him win, but it would be a good mechanism to get a strong push for someone in NXT. Ciampa aint getting any younger. This actually might be the opportunity to put him in the main roster with a furious push. |
It's so Vince and Trips can call somebody best in the world, cause CM Punk chants make them angry.

Orton and Jeff Hardy joined after this week's Smackdown making everyone confirmed so far being from the US and defeating the purpose of calling it a World Cup based on how everyone else holds one. |

No idea why they called it a World Cup , should just add in Batista, Rey,Booker T and Shelton Benjamin and call it ‘King of the Ring 2004’ |

Rey is in, along with announcing he's back fulltime

Also, by watching SmackDown, I'm sure the actual name of this "World Cup" is "The WWE World Cup To Determine The Best In The World".
|
I lost count how many times Tom Phillips said all that.

1. Creating a 'new' World Cup seems more special than 'we've dredged up this old tournament that only occasionally meant a great deal and we've let gather dust for years #prestigious'. 2. If it were the KOTR again, we'd get to enjoy a reminder of how super old Kurt Angle is by mentioning how he already won this competition 18 years ago. 3. Although the competitors are predominantly American, it being branded a 'World' cup does sound more global and inclusive (even if it's not), which is exactly the kind of image that Saudi Arabia are wanting to promote with these shows. 4. Going to an absolute monarchy and crowning a new 'King' is unlikely to go down well, especially when the country's actual royal family will be right there in the arena. |

I had a conspiracy theory that CM Punk would be on his way back to WWE to feud with AJ Styles when they start calling him the "Best in the World." There's a part of me thinking that it might happen with this tournament winner. He's lost in UFC, he might want more money, the Colt Cabana stuff made the indies and New Japan futile experiments for "cred," I think if he were going to make a wrestling comeback, it'd be straight to WWE to "shock the world." And he'd get huge heat. I can see him getting Vickie Guerrero boos.
But he's apparently got film roles and stuff, so that kind of quelled my suspicions on that. As for the tournament: No, I can't explain it. Seems like a bunch of older guys going out and having a one night tournament, but I can't imagine why they'd make these guys wrestle multiple times in one night. |

I imagine you don't get paid per match.

Guess WWE didn't think they had enough US reps for this World Cup based on the next set of matches.
Rey Mysterio (US/Mexico) vs Shinsuke Nakamura (Japan) Seth Rollins (US) vs Drew McIntyre (Scotland) Dean Ambrose (US) vs Dolph Ziggler (US) Plus one more match not announced yet. Depending on what you consider Rey to be repping, could be looking at 7 of the 8 spots being US guys. Already guaranteed to have 5 US guys in this. |
The only reason this is called a "World Cup" is allegedly because the Crown Prince wanted to take shots at rival nation Qatar, who are hosting the actual World Cup in 2022 (and won the bid via bribery / corruption amongst FIFA top brass but that's another story). I saw on Reddit the official KSA press release for the event openly mocks / goads Qatar. The tournament itself is inconsequential.

it's a tournament.

A part of me thought that it was called the "World Cup" to maybe make Saudi Arabia look good as they could say something like "The best in the world have come to our country to see who is the best" and so to them "Saudi Arabia = The Best". |
