So how do you guys discover new music in the genres you like?

I mean, MTV is a joke. VH-1 is in the same boat. Radio just plays the same garbage over and over and that goes double for what you hear in stores and malls. My friend was always really good at digging up awesome bands but that went the way of the dinosaur when he got the old ball and chain. For me, if it wasn't for video game soundtracks and YouTube's recommendation algorithm occasionally getting it right I don't know what I would do. :-\

I rely on Spotify and their "Discover Weekly" playlist. Don't frequent Pitchfork or Rolling Stone like I did before. I do listen to theneedledrop's takes on YouTube, whether I agree with him or not. He's turned me on to acts that I would've never discovered on my own. Video essays on YouTube also get me excited to explore discographies. Sometimes I'll browse /r/ListenToThis and see if anything sticks.

Paying for a streaming service always felt kind of wrong because I don't want artists that I don't like also getting my money. Plus I've always preferred having my music already bought and ready to go. It just seems like a longer process to play a particular song on a service than it is just pulling up an MP3 already saved.

Youtube's recommendations and the tv shows I watch make a small contribution to my listening habits, but otherwise I'm not quite sure how I discover new music.

For the past 3-4 years I've been listening to a lot of Nordic folk music (particularly Finnish), or bands that incorporate elements of that music into their sound, but I have no idea how I came to start down that path in the first place. The first group I got into, and I'd known of them for quite some time but not really bother with them, was Värttinä, and from then on I just started listening to other artists and bands, such as Kardemimmit, Enkel, Maija Kauhanen, Frifot, Vasen, etc.

Usually from listening Ferry Corsten's Countdown or Armin Van Buuren's A State Of Trance show.

So, yeah, I tried doing an inventory of sorts to see which artists or songs I've gotten into that came from a video game or a YouTube recommendation. I gave up counting after around 90-ish.

Usually either from video games, someone playing an interesting song during a stream I'm watching, or wrestling if its a song from an actual band and not something in-house.
