Standing and waiting to catch people

Why in the fuck is this a thing? Worst of all, why is everyone the worst offender? Fuck--I remember Orton raving about "dive", but it was 10 minutes of them staring at each other and positioning to catch the dude still taunting in the ring, he didn't even start running yet. I had to turn the damned thing off.

Maybe every once in a while it'd make sense to wait to be caught like a god damn vanilla midget. But every match? Honestly, what the hell?

What bothers me most is that it's a matter of treating it like a game of acrobatics instead of standing and waiting. For instance,

Is there any way to stop this bullshit? Or is this wrestling now?

Fignuts 09-19-2022 11:09 AM

Like, its such an easy fix too. Just sell or act out of breath while you keep an eye on the opponent in your peripheral. Then react and catch the guy when he jumps.

Instead they stand there staring at the guy like a mental patient for the whole thing. Its stupid.

I get what you’re trying to do, drave, but you’ve accidentally stumbled upon a good point. Takes you out of the action and destroys the context of what wrestling is supposed to be. I remember Kota Ibushi doing a jump from inside the ring to the outside for a springboard moonsault without once even checking to see where his mark would be. Couldn’t get through the rest of the show. If they’re not going to try, why should I invest?

I absolutely hate Darby’s Coffin Drop for this reason. Just look where the fuck you’re supposed to be going in a fight dude. Do a Swanton or something.

Fignuts 09-19-2022 11:16 AM

With Darby I don't really mind because his whole persona is about reckless abandon. So it fits.

Yeah, I’ve tried to take that angle with him, but it’s just too on-the-nose for me. He can still be reckless and try to win matches without taking his eyes off the dude he is trying to beat.

It completely eliminates any sort of sympathy factor when you crash and burn. This is going back years now, but Darby missed a Coffin Drop early on in AEW — I think it was a three-way — but he ate shit on the stairs or something. You just laugh at the muppet because “of course that happened, dickhead.”

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 11:20 AM

Daniel Bryan will fight until he falls apart, but it doesn’t mean he should pull his own arm off to use as a bludgeon in his matches.

This is the one thing my non-wrestling fan wife points out every time she happens to watch something.

No, it was an actual great point. I just copy pastad the other one so I didn't have to do the work.

If I wanted to parody thread, it would have been "Standing and waiting to tag in".

Because maybe, in an IRL fight, I can see guys tagging in and out, waiting their turn.

Drave woke up feelings zesty today.

#1-norm-fan 09-19-2022 12:06 PM

The great Jack Handy explained this phenomenon very well.

Every time I see a wrestler waiting to catch another wrestler, I assume they’re thinking “Hey, free dummy.”

Supreme Olajuwon 09-19-2022 12:10 PM

I would argue that lying down and waiting to catch your opponent is even sillier. If your followup move to a downed opponent takes more than 3 seconds to do, then if your opponent is too injured to move within 3 seconds you could just pin them. Or if your opponent was too injured to move but just lied there waiting anyway, then your opponent is a big dummy and deserves to have Rob Van Dam crush his throat.

I like when they are standing and waiting, but forget to catch people.

Fignuts 09-19-2022 12:41 PM

That was riho's fault.

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 12:44 PM

Riho is not a very good pro-wrestler.

Sepholio 09-19-2022 01:18 PM

Yeah that's clearly 100% on Riho lol

#1-norm-fan 09-19-2022 01:57 PM

She went full “free dummy”.

to be fair, she didn't learn how to wrestle in a ring... :shifty:

Also, one step forward was all it took to do that right.

As for the catching people. I remember seeing a Wild Bunch match in Japan against Kobashi and Johnny Ace, where one of the Wild Bunch held Ace in place while the other Wild Buncher did a dive onto him. He got out of the way before the move connected. It was incredible because it made sense.

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 04:15 PM

Riho is one of the 20% of people Kenny Omega would hire for AEW.

Destor 09-19-2022 05:44 PM

Yeah its very bad in the modern era. Feed into the dive by selling up facing away allowing you to be caught off guard by it. Or during a multiman brawl where where guys are convincingly distracted. I really want to hit that word one more time: convincingly.

Destor 09-19-2022 05:56 PM

Maybe get into a shouting match with a mark. Feed into the dive from there. There's a lot of ways but currently there's no effort to disguise it as anything other than a lazy stunt.

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 05:57 PM

If you know it’s coming, how hard is it to take your eyes off the prize for a second and react a bit later instead of standing there arms outstretched?

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 05:59 PM

Another issue I’ve personally got with dives: How cool are they really? We see them all the time. Everyone does them. They’re passé at this point. I’m more impressed by someone who doesn’t need to do what everyone else is than someone who does the same cheap trick every time.

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 06:04 PM

Dives aren’t cool.

I've noticed that AEW has started to at least not have the camera right on the people waiting but yeah no one really tries to make it look good.

Destor 09-19-2022 06:48 PM

At least there's an effort to hide how bad it looks. Shame its the truck thats gotta fix it though.

Mr. Nerfect 09-19-2022 07:48 PM

Yeah, the cameras should ideally be able to just observe. You shouldn’t need smoke and mirrors to make that shit look good.

That is such a barrier of entry for so many people.
